More. Of. This.

The Chicago Culture Forward grant will award $3 million across up to 60 Chicago-area arts and culture organizations. The deadline to apply is Monday.

Reminding myself… Breathe.

They are turning the NWS into a commercial data service, focused on commercial weather products, which they will sell to private companies like Accuweather, who will no longer have to compete with free government forecasts.

Second this! But please don't forget about the folks in the other NOAA Line Offices. The folks in OAR, NESDIS, etc are developing our future weather radar technologies, operational forecast models, warning paradigms... the list goes on. The entire enterprise is valuable and deserves to be saved. 🥺

Fealty to Donald Trump will not spare you from his cruelty. It's strength — not weakness — that curbs his baser instincts. Now is the time for us to be strong.

Why do this? Because the more people who participate, the more effective it will be. Because giving people a taste of our collective power helps us build toward bigger actions in the future. Because activism is a muscle and organizing is a skill and this is a fine place to begin.

This is Breuer. He's still figuring out how to sit. Wants to know what you think of his plop in the meantime. 12/10 (IG: chase.n.breu.labradors)

Keep it up. ❤️👊

A new $15 million jazz fellowship is granting 50 artists over the age of 62 a $100,000 grant, professional support and performance opportunities

I’m a scientist working on dark matter and neutron stars and I wouldn’t be who I am today without Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Haile Germima, Toni Morrison, Jane Austen, A.A. Milne, Errol Morris, Star Trek, Herman Melville, Lorna Simpson, Edward Lear, Tina Turner, and so many others.

I’m turning 50 within a month, and I will be celebrating with some fellow Aries. The three of us went to see Alvin Ailey together a number of yrs ago (pre-pandemic). This yr, two of us will be going again, which will be a treat. (This picture is from last year with us three.)

I'm confused because it seems like some people think we got to this point overnight. If you know that's untrue, then why would you think that getting to a different place will happen overnight or through one specific kind of action?

there’s a certain type of person who views other human beings less as equals or even individuals worthy of dignity and respect, and more as a resource, like a precious metal, to be strip mined and sold

Maddow: I think it is a bad mistake to let Joy Reid walk out the door. It is also unnerving to see that on a network where we've got two nonwhite hosts in primetime, both of our nonwhite hosts in primetime are losing their shows, as is Katie Phang on the weekend. I do not defend it.

All the folks who exited NBC today. Seen together, hoo boy. Message received.

The West Bank is completely under attack and there’s been very little coverage in American media

I have thought about this so often.

Wow. This is fantastic. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 "Honoring elder musicians with the Jazz Legacies Fellowship." "A new fellowship announced this week gives 20 jazz musicians $100,000 each, no strings attached. Just one stipulation: They have to be at least 62 years old." www.npr.org/2025/02/21/n...

Watching the SAG awards from …was it last night? Unsure, I have been working too much to the point I can’t keep track of things, but just wanted to say, I really love and admire Jane Fonda.

I’m kinda blown away by all these TikToks of people showing up to Republican reps’ town halls & letting them have it over Musk/Trump/DOGE. It seems grassroots. If it becomes a lasting trend to go to town halls, shout down people who are lying to you, and post it online, we might all survive this.

This is such a great organization to support, if you have work clothes to donate.

Joy Reid will host her final evening news show with MSNBC this week as part of a slate of programming changes by Rebecca Kutler, the network’s new president, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

I’m revisiting Audre Lorde’s A Litany for Survival… “…and when we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard nor welcomed but when we are silent we are still afraid So it is better to speak remembering we were never meant to survive.” www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/147275...

Sharing more townhall videos today because they’re giving me hope. THIS is good trouble! Who is this man? I want to shake his hand and buy him a drink.

He’s preparing to declare martial law, you guys. You do see that, don’t you?

This is going to be so great! Please join us March 5 at Chopin Theater. This is a free program! #chicagowriters pulitzerontheroad.pulitzer.org/events/upcom...

Has the world fixed its heart yet?

I love Gov. Pritzker. I’m a proud Illinoisan. Love my governor. This is worth watching, especially from the 4:15 mark to the end, 9:58. “Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage.” m.youtube.com/watch?v=hS66...

The Library of Congress pulled Rosa Parks’ recipe for “featherlite” pancakes out from the Manuscripts Division to share on 🐦. It was written on a First Independence National Bank of Detroit deposit envelope, is held by Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress.🥞😋 #BHM blogs.loc.gov/loc/2015/02/...

“A lot of these contracts have data deletion clauses,” a researcher told me. “The fact is that they won’t be able to reopen them if they change their mind. They’re not just paused. They’re terminated and we’re losing the information.” hechingerreport.org/proof-points...

Some not insignificant beauty.

All, so there's an argument going on in my mentions about this, and I think it's worth saying: Believe your friends who have family and culture histories that have witnessed authoritarian regimes. While I think the American democracy experiment is unique in the history of the world, nothing-

This will be played as an attack on universities and research and rightly so—it is—but someone on this list might save your life or that of someone you know if they could keep working. Many will die who didn’t need to if the cuts stand.

One of my best friends since middle school is an oncology nurse and mom of 3. She's been setting her alarm daily at the same time as a reminder to call her Republican representatives. I love her of course and she's a reminder of how disciplined small actions are possible.
