Great, detailed breakdown of the Musk takeover of government. *Amy Gleason, the official DOGE administrator, had worked as chief product officer in one of the companies of Brad Smith, who helped Musk plan DOGE. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/u...

What are the risks of extreme wealth concentration? Free event, LSE, London, next Thursday 6 March, 6.30pm - with @febalata.bsky.social @garyseconomics.bsky.social @deschuttero.bsky.social and myself, chaired by Tania Burchardt. Registration: www.lse.ac.uk/Internationa...

The Trump admin has figured out that govt lawyers — even in many cases the very lawyers he himself chose in his first term — are the first line of defense against flagrant illegality.

£140m job cuts announced at Edinburgh in classic weasel words: "We must reimagine the future of our University, changing how we work…smaller staff base…strategic rationalisation of our current educational portfolio…functional reform of our professional services" @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social

US Science has been under sustained attack for the last month. I've been thinking about the vulnerabilities in UK science. In a new post, I've imagined a dystopian but *possible* future for UK science - as a way for prompting discussions on how we can protect it. open.substack.com/pub/christin...

The University of Glasgow School of Law is recruiting for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Administrative Law: www.jobs.gla.ac.uk/job/lecturer...

🧚 Great opportunity for a public lawyer (broadly construed) to join Glasgow 🧚

And so the demise of research in higher education accelerates. Can't submit a great funding bid because half the Co-Is are under notice for redundancy. So all work grinds to a halt - even for those institutions/academics remaining. This is simply the devastation of higher education in the UK.

Dear UK friends, I am in the early stages of planning a research trip for later this year. Do let me know if you might like me to come and talk about constitutional law or regulatory theory. Keen to visit as many people and places as I can as it may be a while before I’m back.

NEW BLOG: Why the French parliament tried to introduce PMQs Calixte Bloquet & Ruxandra Serban explain why French politicians decided to experiment with a French version of PMQs. This is the first of a 2-part series on PMQs in France.

This is quite different. The VC at Birmingham City University insists there is no financial issue at the university. He just wants staff who will follow his “change agenda”; those who don’t are encouraged to leave. www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midland...

'principal Peter Mathieson said that Edinburgh must reverse years of forecasted deficits “to sustain our position as a world-leading institution”.' If Edinburgh has been forecasting substantial deficits for years, its University Court has serious questions to answer.

Chance would be a fine thing

One of my two almae matres, this news hits really hard. How is it possible that a world-leading institution like Edinburgh has reached this point? I can't help but wonder whether Mathieson (2018-now, salary over 400k)) and O'Shea (2002-2018) will take any responsibility about this state of affairs?

“Shed staff”

Reporter: Who is the administrator of DOGE? White House secretary: “I’m not going to reveal the name of that person from this podium…”

We are hiring TWO political theorists as well as a PPE position which is open to theorists (focus on history of economic thought) - please apply and circulate! www.kcl.ac.uk/jobs/108445-...

I mean... if you have to write a book...

Extraordinary really.

The firing of top military lawyers—the Judge Advocates General of the Army, Air Force, & Navy—by Hegseth signals a troubling move to strip legal oversight from military ops. @stevevladeck.bsky.social explains how this move clears the way for the Trump admin to ignore the rule of law in the military.

On OLC website (but for how long?), in contrast w POTUS/AG directives: OLC “provide[s] advice based on its best understanding of what the law requires--not...an advocate's defense of...contemplated action or position proposed by ... the Administration" www.justice.gov/olc/page/fil...

'So can universities actually make money through branch campuses, particularly in India? Or do their overseas ambitions risk worsening their already dire financial prospects?' Profits figure throughout each part of this extensive analysis; pedagogy and research are nowhere mentioned. Speaks volumes.

Hello @bsky.app! For my first real post I wanted to share this user-friendly resource that I created which provides a high-level intro to the policies, laws, and best practices that are designed to promote integrity in government spending. blogs.gwu.edu/law-govpro/u...

Gitta Sereny, the case of Mary Bell

as everyone has said: too accurate.

Interesting new post here
