Thank you @literaryhub.bsky.social and @jamesfolta.com for letting me yap about my book!

Next weekend (but if you can't make it live, the class and slides will be sent out afterward)—NEW two-hour generative class that teaches a process for coming up with funny ideas. Based on INSIDE JOKES, my upcoming comedy craft book with @elissabassist.bsky.social, get a sneak peek!

If you’re looking for someone to give you robust tools and skills in comedy, I’d go with @caitlinkunkel.bsky.social - her workshops are 🔥.

Any class by @caitlinkunkel.bsky.social is worth its weight in gold! Which is a nonsense metaphor for a weightless, virtual class but you get my point. If Caitlin taught classes on metaphors my writing would be better.

Caitlin's classes are super informative and fun, highly recommended!

This is the first short humor class I've taught in years—I've refined it down to 2 hours while writing INSIDE JOKES with @elissabassist.bsky.social! On Zoom, you'll get the slides/recording after if you can't make it, learn a repeatable process to brainstorm, draft, and rewrite a short humor piece.

Added new sites to this starter pack, there are now 30+ humor and satire publications to follow!

Satire and real fake news lovers! I put together a starter pack of satire sites on here mostly so I can check the feed on it but follow and discover any you haven't yet! go.bsky.app/RBhwLcM

looking back, AOL had it right. 30 hours of internet per month was the right amount.

The New Yorker is celebrating its 100 year anniversary, and what a time to check out The Neu Jorker, still one of the things I'm proudest to have worked on

Lady Gaga is back with a banger and I am back on @mcsweeneys.net mama!!! www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/var...

Got my hand on an early copy of @felipetmedina.bsky.social's AMERICA, LET ME IN and not only am I supplementing my (shamefully poor) knowledge of our immigration system, but I'm laughing my face off at the same time. Out in March, Kirkus approved!

One spot left! We’ll cover all parts of a proposal, brainstorm comps for each other, start our bios, and talk platform.

In this week’s Newsletter, @lukevburns.bsky.social & I shared funny writing by Adam Dietz, Troy Doetch, Kate Faigen, Gwendolyn Pryor Boutros, Kate Villa & @caitlinkunkel.bsky.social, in @pointsincase.com @mcsweeneys.net & @havehashad.com! Like short humor? Subscribe here for a weekly humor digest:

I’m reading an early copy of @caseyjohnston.bsky.social’s A PHYSICAL EDUCATION and I’m absolutely loving it—one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Memoir, science writing, fascinating histories of how lifting came to the US. Out in May, preorder now!

New class just dropped for March! Let's take it back to the very beginning and learn how to actually HAVE, CAPTURE, and FORM funny ideas. We'll use lists, prompts, brainstorming, + comedic tools like exaggeration and parody. You'll leave with a slew of premises and titles for future funny writing:

New classes up for Q1! All single sessions, online. The one and only time I'm teaching book proposal, BRAND NEW brainstorming class, and the popular Comedy Writing for Non-Comedians:

This is coming up! Likely the only time I will teach this class in 2025. Past students have gotten lit agents, sold their books, and even gotten six-figure deals off the proposals they started here. Come join us and start working!

We've been counting down our most-read pieces of the year over on @mcsweeneys.net, but I'd like to herald a few others that weren't as wildly popular but still deserve some extra attention.🧵 #McSweeneysHiddenGemsof2024

If you’re the kind of person who easily forgets what you’ve accomplished, you need a practice for reminding yourself. Count the years, the finished projects, the progress, the praise, count it all up and use it as evidence against the ever present criticism in your head that you’re not doing enough.

you know who should be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame? Sisyphus

This just became my most-read newsletter: the people crave holiday mental illness content! Check it out if you’re scrambling today for last minute gifts like I am.
