Blame Vance* *universally useful advice

Hurrah for this! Crossed it yesterday awkwardly skirting pedestrians, thanking and apologising as I went. Excited to ride over it properly soon.

Utrecht's morning commute

Having a weekend in Utrecht. It isn't just the infrastructure that makes it safe, but the attitude. Motorists don't hate cyclists. They aren't impatient, don't seem to fret about us having priority everywhere. Maybe because motorists are also cyclists here. Because it's normal.

Assisted dying is happening now. Far better is is safely and legally available than people have to suffer this trauma.

Am I supposed to be appalled that the French are trying to stop migrants drowning in the Channel? Matt Coker, whoever he is, has either been badly presented by The Times, or needs a conscience www.thetimes.com/article/bc6c...

Fires everywhere

In a dog eat dog fight, an authoritarian government can inflict more pain on its citizens than a democratic government can tolerate. I realise that it is no longer taken as a given that the US is a democracy, but still.

Badenoch supporting Israel on this simply because these are Labour MPs? She's so far from being a suitable candidate for PM that I cannot believe the Tories can let this go on much longer. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Angela Rayner should get a red phone on her desk, and every time there's a story like this she should post a video of herself phoning the council and overruling them.

From a Sunday Telegraph story about people who have inherited houses while already owning one, complaining that having to pay double council tax on this second home (if they keep it) is ‘extortion’ and I just…cannot

Look, if you're going to bend the knee ... just bend the knee. Don't say you're tying your shoe.

She got elected! Congratulations Leyla - go shake them out of their smug complacency.

Voted in the City of London Corporation election. Maddest incarnation of democracy ever. The hustings yesterday was full of men in suits and gilt-trimmed costumes congratulating themselves on how marvellous they are. Voted for a fresh voice @leylaboulton.bsky.social @britainelects.com

My class made our German teacher cry today. And not in the good way. Still feel awful about it. But hey, we also took a photo for #shoutoutforgerman that I assume someone at @goetheinstitut.bsky.social will put online.

So is it possible the American crewed Stena ship accidentally fell out of a window?

Shout-out to all the German teachers in the UK 🫡 From 17-21 March, join our week-long celebration of the German language by using #ShoutOutForGerman to showcase the amazing things you do in your classrooms to get students excited about learning German!

The hubris of naming a party after yourself followed by the embarrassment of not getting enough votes to get into parliament -and then seeing the party you flounced from get a huge boost because you cleansed their party of the far-left who were putting voters off.

As Germans head for the polls today, the stakes could not be higher for Germany‘s future and Europe. My in-depth analysis on Merz‘ huge mistakes, but also some hope that the centre will get its act together in light of what happened since Munich.

Good morning. After a rough few days, this week's Blind Date was perfectly timed to fill you with joy. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

There are better-informed discussions of British politics in primary school playgrounds.

Once I'd picked my way through the double negative, I think I understood this is good news.

They're killing people. They're killing communities. They're killing the planet. So how are these gigantic tanks still allowed on our roads?

The exceptional Jane Herron is stepping down from her role as Bedford Free School Principal at the end of this academic year. She will be a very hard act to follow. We are looking for someone to do so. mynewterm.com/jobs/138228/... Conversations & visits very welcome. Please repost.

The consequences of the German CDU's (inadvertent or not, discuss) embrace of the far-right. My weekly election campaign column @politico.eu www.politico.eu/article/germ...

This is not just breaking a taboo on a day where the Bundestag was supposed to remember the Holocaust, it will backfire for the Conservatives as the pandering to the far right has backfired for the Tories in Britain. A huge victory for the AfD. A dark day for Germany. Why do people never learn.

I'm not going to pay 30 quid a month for TNT just so I can watch cycling and skiing, so that's an end to my #couchpeloton fun. Bye Discovery+, it was nice (Carlton CringeKirby excepted).

The state of this. Rip it into toilet paper.

I saw 'Learning' during its run at the Arts Depot before Christmas and enjoyed it enormously. As someone brought up a Roman Catholic, taught by nuns at a convent school, its themes resonated in me. It's funny and touching without being sentimental. bit.ly/learning-show

Emma Barnet further alienating R4 Today core audience by announcing she doesn't like talking about the weather. This much evident earlier in the programme. Barnet, handing to local Yorkshire reporter: 'it's cold. How is it with you?' Reporter: 'it's cold'. 🙄 Maybe Emma has a point.

Absolute garbage of a headline - what just happened is that a bill to protect vulnerable young people was voted through www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
