Based in the UK, we bring people together to push for urgent action to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate, as linked to other social justice issues. We have an active trade union group.

Heidi Alexander is not just making terrible decisions, she's also sending a terrible message: 'normal' people don't change their behaviour to reduce emissions, or encourage others to do so; to care deeply about the crisis we face is something to be embarrassed about, not aspire to as a good citizen.

Many seem unable to face reality on UK gas Do you A: Fantasise about North Sea licensing (yellow sliver in chart) + Texas-on-Thames, continue to rely on gas heat/power, then cry as gas imports surge >>2x (hatched area) Or B: Shift to clean energy & cut gas imports by two-thirds

Announcement now out that Heidi Alexander 'minded to approve' Gatwick airport. Climate professor @kevinclimate.bsky.social says ministers who claim aviation expansion is compatible with Paris agreement are either ignorant or dishonest - not fit for office. SAFs cannot deliver in time or at scale.

Before this week, #BP’s business plans were already on a collision course with #netzero and the Paris #Climate Goals. 🔥 Now, it’s going even further in a planet-wrecking direction. 🌍 The @sciencemuseumldn.bsky.social must urgently review its BP partnership! 😡 www.theguardian.com/business/nil...

Good to see the Royal Society finally speaking out about some of the issues raised by the Musk affair. This is a good statement - and a good start. I trust there will be further discussion of these matters at the Fellows meeting next Monday.

Update - the Royal Society is meeting on Monday. Any scientists who have not yet signed Stephen Curry’s open letter, please do! occamstypewriter.org/scurry/2025/...

'Ecocidal bastards are actually ecocidal bastards' headline.

Can we get this blazoned across the top of every newspaper article disparaging 'net zero'? Like the cigarette health warnings.

To no one's surprise, UK newspapers are full of truly dreadful - and, at times, outright bizarre - "reporting" of the Climate Change Committee's new carbon-budget advice. For a sane and nuanced summary – with lots of charts - here's our detailed coverage... www.carbonbrief.org/ccc-reducing...

Starmer says he made a 'painful choice' to cut UK aid, echoing rhetoric on welfare cuts. Heidi Alexander talks of 'tough decisions' deciding to greenlight airport expansion and increase emissions. The really 'tough' decision would be to face down the right-wing press and put people and planet first.

Starmer's aid cut betrays the most vulnerable nations, including threatening vital climate finance. Worsening climate impacts, soaring humanitarian needs and growing instability make this “a truly catastrophic blow” that will cause more people to die and lose their livelihoods.

It's a crisis - temperatures rising even more than predicted, alarm about tipping points. So the transport minister proudly states she is "not an eco-warrior" and will expand airports. We have a government that thinks prioritising a liveable planet is a luxury belief. Quite frankly, appalling.

Presenting: one of the most stark illustrations of terrible policy decisionmaking in British history.

As vital healthcare and aid for the poorest is already devastated by Trump gutting USAID, and as the deadly impacts of climate change accelerate, this is a disastrous move. "Starmer announces big cut to UK aid budget to boost defence spending"

Centrica – owners of British Gas – raked in profits of more than £1.5bn in 2024. Meanwhile gas prices rising again mean families are paying higher bills. It's well past time to end our energy dependence on volatile fossil gas and invest in warm homes and renewable energy.

I will keep the letter open until 3rd March, the date of the meeting called by the Royal Society to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows. So one more week to add your voice to the call for the RS to stand up for its values.

The Chancellor's airport expansion plans don't add up. The economic claims have been debunked, and she seems to have a worrying inability to do the maths on 'sustainable' alternative fuels. Or possibly she's just not that concerned about climate breakdown? www.noairportexpansion.org/2025/02/expe...

Particularly pernicious because the intuition is half right. If you could just increase CO2 levels and keep weather the same, you *would* increase plant growth. Unfortunately increased CO2 does in fact affect the weather, and the climate loss to yields is bigger than the CO2 fertilization gain.

Musk has reprogrammed the X AI to spout fossil fuel industry disinformation (citing lukewarmer denialist Bjorn Lomborg) in answer to "is climate change an urgent threat?" Obviously relying on AI for info is always risky, but the contrast with other AI (see replies) shows how deliberate this is.

Write to Heidi Alexander and ask her to: 1- Say NO to the Gatwick Airport expansion 2- Refuse to scrap important public transport requirements if she is minded to approve expansion A decision on a second runway is due by 27 Feb so take action today! actionnetwork.org/letters/dont...

'Sustainable aviation growth' is definitely a bigger lie than the UK having 5.2 billion air passengers in 2025. Because some people actually believe in the former.

Do you, (or your employer or e.g. any voluntary groups you're in) bank with HSBC? Did you know it's really easy to switch your current account from a High Street Bank like HSBC or Barclays to a more ethical alternative, e.g. many Building Societies? www.currentaccountswitch.co.uk Just saying...

Spoiler. Not at all.

There are now over 3000 signatories to my letter asking the Royal Society to explain why it has taken no action and said nothing about evident contraventions of its code of conduct by Elon Musk FRS. forms.gle/dBGaHk7SYUNA...

(Senior Lecturer in aeronautical engineering enters the chat) There is no, absolutely no, good reason for supersonic civil transport; they exist to make childish squillionaires feel special. Even ignoring the environmental damage, there is no economic case for them. Or the aircraft.

This is a good, accessible article about sea ice loss. It would have been helpful to spell out the (rather significant) fact that the seas have been warming due to our fossil fuel burning. And that the speed of future ice loss is something humans can influence by our actions.
