ICYMI: We’re excited to announce @drmelissalem.bsky.social as this year’s keynote speaker. Melissa will speak about the disinformation around climate change & how public health can support transformative change in this realm. Learn more and register below: site.pheedloop.com/event/HighGr...

"This is like a tobacco company teaching kids about health, or a fast food company teaching kids about good nutrition,” said @cape-acme.bsky.social president Melissa Lem. “There's a clear conflict of interest.” Great coverage of CAPE + @forourkidscanada.bsky.social's new fossil fuels in 🏫 report.

Metro Vancouver’s climate leadership is at risk. @cape-bc.bsky.social Chair Dr. Larry Barzelai & I wrote about why this matters for public health—and why cutting climate programs now would be a mistake. Let’s make sure Metro keeps moving forward, not backward. Read our op-ed in the Vancouver Sun:

Kudos @cape-bc.bsky.social @rhifaux.bsky.social for raising the alarm on this latest attempt to roll back #climate leadership in B.C.

CAPE’s @drmelissalem.bsky.social will be joining three other BC climate leaders for this important discussion tomorrow evening on BC’s climate goals for the next five years. Don’t miss it—sign up and be part of the conversation! Register here: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

I've just read CAPE's new report on how fossil fuel companies are sneaking their messaging into Canadian classrooms. As a parent of two elementary school kids, this is infuriating. Our kids need climate education based on science, not industry PR. 1/

BREAKING: New report reveals fossil fuel companies funding misleading #ClimateEducation in schools across Canada, downplaying fossil fuels’ role in the climate crisis and the urgent need to transition away from them. Read the joint press release and report from CAPE & For Our Kids: loom.ly/WhY0TbM

Metro Vancouver is considering cuts to climate programs that protect public health and help fight climate change. We urged the Board to reject these cuts & continue funding climate action. These programs cost just 1% of the budget but are vital for clean air, public health, and a sustainable future.

CAPE is concerned Eby’s fast-tracking plan is “laying the groundwork to expand LNG, an industry responsible for worsening health & air & water quality, increasing healthcare system costs, insurance rates & the cost of living, & [which] is making the impacts of climate change even more dramatic...”

“It’s understandable to want to diversify and loosen economic ties to the U.S., but we now have an opportunity to be leaders in clean energy—not dirty LNG...—securing good jobs, affordable energy for households and businesses, and a safer, healthier future.” - @drmelissalem.bsky.social

🚨 Metro Vancouver’s climate leadership is at risk. The Metro Van Board is considering eliminating key climate policies that reduce pollution & protect public health. A vote could happen as soon as Feb 14. We need to act NOW to protect these programs. 🧵👇 1/

Trump’s tariff carve-out for oil & gas is a signal—we must respond strategically. A Canadian export tax on fossil fuels would generate billions for workers & weaken Big Oil’s grip. Fossil fuels harm our climate, pollute our air, & endanger public health. It’s time to invest in a clean energy future.

"LNG expansion must not proceed — until we know whether or not expansion will threaten world climate and British Columbians’ health. Good public health policy demands nothing less." My latest op-ed @theprovince.bsky.social with Calvin Sandborn. @cape-acme.bsky.social theprovince.com/opinion/op-e...

B.C.’s LNG expansion is a public health risk. Calvin Sandborn and @drmelissalem.bsky.social highlight how fracking and LNG pollution worsen respiratory illness, heart disease, and climate impacts. To protect our health, we MUST phase out fossil fuels and invest in clean energy.

PFAS, or 'forever chemicals,' have been harming health for decades—while industries knew the risks and kept going. It's time for decision-makers to put human health first! #PFAS #ToxicChemicals #EnvironmentalHealth @jvipondmd.bsky.social

BC Premier David Eby has directed his new cabinet to prioritize economic development & speed up permitting for resource projects. Will the environment take a backseat? @ainsliecruickshank.bsky.social and @sobittersosweet.bsky.social dig in #bcpoli thenarwhal.ca/bc-ndp-manda...

Over 350,000 chemicals, including PFAS, phthalates, and bisphenol-A (BPA), are commonly used in items like toys, clothing, and electronics. These substances have been linked to rising rates of childhood diseases such as diabetes, cancer, autism, and ADHD. 1/

"If you're a human being living on this planet, that means you have everything you need to care about climate change and to use your voice to advocate for climate action." "BC continues to make dangerous choices to allow expansion of the fossil fuel industry that threaten our health." Good to represent @cape-acme.bsky.social at @bcclimateemergency.bsky.social's 2024 Report launch. Takeaways: đź“‘ Overall grade = minor progress âž• BC must do more to be a climate leader

'A new study of the 2021 heat dome..has revealed that poverty & poor health increased the risk of mortality...Climate change is a public health crisis, & doctors are warning that BC’s LNG industry is fuelling impacts across the province that increase healthcare system costs & reduce access to care.'
