Hello, classics graduate - I’m interested in classics, the middle ages, history in general and art. Also, rabbits. Currently reacquainting myself with Latin via Virgil, Ovid, Juvenal, Tibullus and Catullus. “Sarcastic Brit” - the Guardian

This extraordinary cameo glass amphora is from the Tomb of the Blue Vase in Pompeii. It depicts Cupids harvesting grapes while another decadently reclines on a couch and listens to a lyre playing. It is incredibly beautiful. 🕰️C1st AD. 🏛️📷 National Archaeological Museum, Naples 🏺 #AncientBlueSky

Do not - I repeat - do not ask what 7th century Picts got up to on those long, cold Scottish evenings.

Me? Oh I’m just a 3,000 year old Egyptian baboon hanging out n chillin’ 📷mine

I’ve always wanted to watch a movie written by a cat

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

With debate rife about Matt Damon’s armour in the Odyssey photoshoot, a reminder of what Odysseus may have worn. This Mycenaean ivory plaque shows an elite warrior in a boar tusk helmet, carrying a long spear & huge ‘figure of 8’ shield. He seems to wear greaves too. 🏛️📷 Delos Archaeological Museum

Minoan vases with octopuses are always a delight, but relatively common. This rare vase shows a different type of marine animal: an argonaut. It's an octopus-like animal that lives on the seabed in a shell. The Minoans were masters of depicting aquatic creatures. 🕰️c1500 BC 🏛️📷Heraklion Museum

With the ever growing buyers’ regret among some voters in the US after federal benefits, programs and jobs are slashed, I can’t help but think of this mosaic of a leopard eating a man’s face on #MosaicMonday

“The Witch Head Nebula” is a large reflection nebula about 900ly away in Orion that’s illuminated from the star Rigel (seen right). This was a filterless capture of 15 hrs, but only 10hrs were usable due to a constant stream of dimly lit satellites right across the witch’s jaw. 🔭 #Astrophotography

On #FindsFriday, here’s a terracotta oil lamp in the shape of a sandalled foot. I’m hoping the odour from the flame is not reflective of the shape…. 🕰️1st century AD 🏛️ House of Orion, Pompeii 📷 mine

On the left is a C1st AD fresco of Bellerophon taming Pegasus with Athena from Pompeii. It’s a beautiful example of the clean, idealised classical style. I can’t help but see its influence on Jacques-Louis David, particularly his Oath of the Horatii (right). 📷 mine #FrescoFriday

This Egyptian collar would’ve covered the chest of a mummy. The god Re-Horakhty, associated with primal life energy, is represented at the top as a winged sun-disc & in the middle as a falcon with a sun-disc on his head. It’s made from cartonnage (layered papyrus) and coated with gold leaf 📷mine

Crazy day at work and I don’t care that I’ve posted this before; I need cheering up. So here’s a mosaic of a rabbit driving a chariot pulled by ducks. Good day to you all.

#TombTuesday: the headstone of Marcus Cocceius Nonnus shown as a charioteer with whip in one hand & victory palm in the other. He was 6. A little boy who liked the races. No different from little boys now with their football teams. It’s beautiful & sad. You can feel the parents’ pain. 🏛️BM 📷me

This is the tombstone of the Mauritanian charioteer (& superstar) Crescens. He raced 686 times, winning 47 times & amassing 1.5 million sesterces in prizes. He was 22 when he died. The inscription is silent, but an accident in the circus may be the cause of death 🕰️ c 124AD 🏛️Capitoline Museums 📷mine

This powerful mosaic shows a lion dragging off a stag it’s slain. The lion’s tail has been cropped by the right edge of the mosaic, which may mean the hunting centrepiece was commissioned & made elsewhere, & then cut to size to fit in a pre-planned design 🕰️c180AD 🏛️Verulanium Museum 📷me #MosaicMonday
