One of 3 Otters seen on the River Ely near Grangemoor Park this morning, managed a couple of shots before it saw me and dived. Later the 3 were playing around in the middle of the river #mammals

Juan Fernandez Petrel, photo taken a little west of Alejandro Selkirk Island 08/02/2025 #superseabirdsunday #birds

Eels always put up a spirited defence against being eaten, it had already been inside the Great Crested Grebe but wriggled its way back out! Taken in Cardiff Bay last year #birds #birdingwales

As it's #PenguinAwarenessDay here's a shot of a Yellow-eyed Penguin I took at The Opera rehab centre. It was one of many that had been brought in over the 23-24 breeding season. All were malnourished as they were struggling to find enough food. This one was due for release shortly #birds

A beautiful Razorbill on Skomer a few years ago for #SuperSeabirdSunday #birds

Do love a Yellow-throated Warbler, a common resident of Central America and Caribbean islands. This one was around the pool bar of the hotel we were staying at in El Salvador a few years ago #birds

Another one from Perth, this Kookaburra was under heavy tree cover but rather like the subdued lighting on it #birds #australianbirds

Perth Botanic Gardens was very productive last April when I was there. This White-cheeked Honeyeater posed very nicely on a large flower head #birds #australianbirds

Looking through the field guide for birds in the Perth area when I was there last year, I had marked Western Spinebill as one I'd like to see. After a brief view deep in bushes I was delighted when one perched out in the open in the Perth Botanic Garden #birds #australianbirds

Some of the Honeyeaters in Australia are fantastic birds, I loved watching the New Holland Honeyeaters, which were common around Perth where I was staying last year #birds

I love how the 'character' of a bird can change just by how it's standing and the way it's facing Left - perky Robin Centre - cross Robin Right - quizzical Robin #birds #birdingwales

A southern hemisphere Gannet for #superseabirdsunday this week - Australasian Gannet off the coast of north island New Zealand back in February 2024 #birds

Bullfinch are usually really wary so I was amazed to find a pair near Penarth Head at the end of the barrage that let me stand within about 8m of them. The male was perched in the open munching on buddleja seed heads for several minutes before flying off. #birds #birdingwales

Another Aussie bird to brighten and arm your day - Red Wattlebird flycatching at Margaret's River, Western Australia #birds

The spring-fed waters at Burrows Well, Merthyr Mawr Warren, can be a magnet for insectivores in cold weather such as this. Today this included Yellow-browed Warbler (found by Dean Bolt), Firecrest and 20+ Chiffchaffs, at least 3 of which were Siberian. Not too shabby!

Another bird from warmer climes and back to Margaret River in Western Australia in April, this time a lovely Western Rosella feeding on what appears to be some sort of milk thistle #birds #australianbirds

With it so cold outside I've looked back to April 2024 and somewhere slightly warmer - Margaret River, a little south of Perth and a lovely little Inland Thornbill, small and difficult to get a shot of in the habitat I was in #birds

It was another bumper autumn for Cory's Shearwater in the Celtic Sea and western Channel. Still amazes me when I'm surveying the SW area in October and Cory's is the most numerous bird recorded #birds #ukbirding #SuperSeabirdSunday

A Song Thrush picking out invertebrates amongst the thawing grass at Grangemoor Park yesterday morning #birds #birdingwales

A decent start to my #PWC2025 list in the Bay, after the damp start yesterday finished today on 58 with the highlight being the Velvet Scoter (4th day). V nice to find this 1st yr male Black Redstart - thought might be tricky this year as regular birds not here this winter #birds #birdingwales

Hopefully birders have been out today on their patches, starting up for a big #PWC2025! Here is the sign up and score sheet. Please follow the instructions, and then add your patch to the sign up sheet. Any questions, please get in touch! docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Last photo taken in 2024, mid-afternoon yesterday - a Grey Wagtail brightening up the garden. It's popped in on a few occasions over the last week or so, hopefully it will in 2025 too #birds #birdingwales

Let's start the day by wishing everyone all the best for 2025, not an auspicious start with heavy rain here in Cardiff. My first photo of 2025 is actually one of the last from 2024 - taken yesterday on Cardiff Bay barrage - when I had another encounter with the pair of Ravens #birds #birdingwales

Having had fantastic views of the Black-throated Diver just a few days ago I was delighted to be able to watch a Great Northern Diver at even closer range, on a trip out west to Solva, Pembrokeshire, catching shore crabs and dismembered them until they were small enough to eat #birds #birdingwales

Going back to New Zealand in March for this lovely Cape Petrel #birds #superseabirdsunday

The light may have been poor this morning but there was enough to catch the light on this fantastic Raven on the barrage this morning #birds #birdingwales

Light was poor today but managed a couple of decent flight shots of a Redshank scooting up and down the Ely embankment along Plas Taliesin in the bay #birds #birdingwales

As it was showing so well I had to pay a visit to Barry docks, not disappointed, these are by some margin the best views I've ever had of Black-throated Diver #birds #birdingwales

A first sighting this winter, for me, of colour-ringed Redshank 'Peter' (it was ringed at Peterstone Gout, a few miles east of Cardiff). It was ringed back in February 2016 as an adult so is now at least 10 years old #birds #birdingwales

There's been a female Ring-necked Duck up at Lisvane reservoir in north Cardiff for the past couple of months. Today it decided to pay the Bay a visit - a nice patch year tick, thank you very much #birds #birdingwales

White-faced Storm Petrel taken off North Island, New Zealand back in February this year. They really are fantastic birds #birds #SuperSeabirdSunday

You wait decades to see a Red-breasted Merganser on patch then 2nd comes along a week or so later. A female on the River Ely, near where it enters Cardiff Bay, was a nice find this morning. Likely the bird that's been on Cosmeston for some time #birds #birdingwales

Portrait of a Cormorant, likely a female judging by the shape of the bill, taken this morning on Bute East Dock. I think they're superb birds and will likely feature again in my posts as they get into breeding plumage #birds #birdingwales

While I was photographing the Common Sandpiper I managed to grab a couple of shots of a Great Crested Grebe flying up river #birds #birdingwales

It's nice to have a couple of Common Sandpipers wintering around the edge of Cardiff Bay, usually to be found along the cobbled embankment along the River Ely where it joins the Bay. Watching one this afternoon and it was finding a lot of freshwater shrimps to feed on #birds #birdingwales

There are quite a few wintering Chiffchaffs around Cardiff Bay. I caught this one on Saturday when we had a rare glimpse of sun #birds #birdingwales

The light has been seriously grey recently (apart from Saturday) but some species can look okay even if the lighting isn't great. This female Goosander was heading out of one of the graving docks near Techniquest the other day #birds #birdingwales

Grey Heron sat in a tree along the Atlantic Wharf canals, just a few metres from a footpath. Seems oblivious of people passing by and just watches the world go by #birds #birdingwales

Buller's Shearwater is up there as one of my favourite seabirds, this was one of many seen while I was in New Zealand earlier this year #birds #superseabirdsunday
