"... civil society has been impoverished by donors replacing constituencies. Instead of having an organized base for whom I speak, we have “whoever gave me the latest grant so that I can now speak for people who can’t speak for themselves.”" - M. Ganz ssir.org/articles/ent...

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

This is unfortunately true for too many journalism leaders.

🚨NEWS: Massive layoffs are about to hit the IRS -- around 10,000 employees -- potentially in the middle of filing season. Of particular interest to the DOGE: Cutting IRS enforcement capabilities. -- with @jeffstein.bsky.social + Hannah Natanson

I'm hearing now that *every* technologist CFPB hired to investigate Big Tech was fired this evening. That's somewhere between 70-100 people. wired.com/story/dozens-of-cfpb-workers-terminated-in-after-hours-firing-blitz/

Come hear me, scholar/writer Lan Duong & memoirist Mai Elliott talk about the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Viet Nam, especially in terms of a future of liberation. Plus artist Ann Le & a preview of the landmark anthology "The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora.” Link below.

Every time I catch a headline about a new Exec Order or Senate confirmation, I think about Peele's "Get Out," Everett's "James."

My review of @joshshepperd.bsky.social's important and ever-so-timely book, Shadow of the New Deal, on the history of American public media has finally been published. I posted it online here:

"There is no greater forcing function on this Earth than Trump on the podium making an announcement."

Whoo. Say it.

@davarianbaldwin.bsky.social I couldn't make your lecture earlier today. But! I'm buying your book!

NEW: WIRED has identified six young men—all apparently between the ages of 19 and 24, according to public databases, their online presences, and other records—who have little to no government experience and are now playing critical roles in Musk’s DOGE project. By @telliotter.bsky.social

I’m plowing through this deeply researched (rich with citations) but very accessible reappraisal of “New World” history by one of the best, Greg Grandin. Pair it with Ned Blackhawk’s REDISCOVERY OF AMERICA & Álvaro Enrigue’s fiction, & mwah … chef’s kiss.

My friends, 2025 is going to be rocky. But one thing I know for sure is that some incredible people put a huge amount of care, craft, love and rage into writing books that will soon be published that are going to help us make sense of this broken and beautiful world. 📚🧵

Sunday Sermon:

*hanging head* I hate it here.

Earlier this week, New College trustee Mark Bauerlein and Claremont Institute fellow Scott Yenor published a @chronicle.com piece advocating for an ideological government takeover of general education curricula. Today, Amy Reid and I respond. www.chronicle.com/article/flor...
