🧵Some updates after listening to testimony this morning: The part of the amendment specifically affecting Indianapolis would create a new education alliance to develop a plan for facility and transportation sharing between IPS and charter schools. (1/6)

🧵 The House Education committee meets this morning & an idea from earlier this year appears to be coming back re: transportation. A new amendment seeks to establish a centralized transportation program — essentially addressing the piecemeal transportation we see here in Indy. (1/7)

🧵 Did you get an unsolicited text about IPS last week? Well, some of the parents featured in that message are speaking out about it. They say their comments are being taken out of context & you should be careful about what you read. (1/2)

📩 Inbox: A coalition representing Black business, faith & community leaders put out a release today on proposals that would shift funding from IPS to charter schools. The upshot? The coalition wants to see greater accountability & funding for all students. Read the full statement here👇

With all that's happening around school funding, I had the chance yesterday to catch up with several IPS students and ask their thoughts. They shared a feeling of already having to make do with less and worry about what happens next if more cuts are to come. Read more from these students here:

A standout figure in IPS’ latest budget: $124 million — roughly a quarter of total operating expenses — are flagged for innovation schools, most of which are charter schools. This comes as charter leaders lobby state lawmakers to direct some property tax money away from IPS into their schools.

Trump is speaking now about his plans to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. Trump just named several Republican governors in attendance at today's announcement, including Indiana's Mike Braun. Here's a live feed if you want to follow along: www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7Ox...

I’m at the Statehouse today where students from 6 high schools are participating in an IPS Action Day. Students will hear from speakers, write letters to lawmakers & sit in on session. It’s the 1st time IPS has done this in a while & comes amid a tense period of debate over education funding.

My colleague @peterblanchard.bsky.social talked to the director of the Haitian Association of Indiana recently about how policy change & rhetoric around immigration is affecting the Haitian community. This passage in particular underscores the very real challenges facing kids in our schools today:

Purdue University has bought a property in downtown as part of its expansion in Indianapolis.

An interesting read from @wishtv.com. Bus safety is no joke.

I'm new to Bluesky, but here to connect, listen and share some stories about things I think folks in Indy might want to know. Here's a first share from me: As debate draws out about funding, parents at Indianapolis Public Schools feel caught in the middle. mirrorindy.org/senate-bill-...
