"Wrapped in poetic mysticism, the feature debut by writer-director Augusto Sandino is the first film ever shot in the Páramo of Sumapaz" says @carlosfilm.bsky.social in his @ebertvoices.bsky.social review of the Colombian surreal movie A VANISHING FOG, now playing in Los Angeles

The animatronics in THE LEGEND OF OCHI are astounding. I wrote a deep dive into how they were crafted and brought to life. For LA Times, I talked to director Isaiah Saxon, to animatronics legend John Nolan, and other artists involved. The BTS photos are incredible: www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

There are 5 Latin American animated features screening at ANNECY this year! Maybe the most ever? Dying to see all of these. -NIMUENDAJÚ 🇧🇷 -OLIVIA & THE CLOUDS 🇩🇴 -THE GREAT HISTORY OF WESTERN PHILOSOPHY 🇲🇽 -I AM FRANKELDA 🇲🇽 -MY GRANDFATHER IS A NIHONJIN 🇧🇷

My piece on the artistry behind the puppets of THE LEGEND OF OCHI is in print today at LA Times. I talked to director Isaiah Saxon and some of the artists behind these wondrous creatures. The movie expands nationwide this weekend. Here online: www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

@carlosfilm.bsky.social dives into A VANISHING FOG for @ebertvoices.bsky.social ahead of the film’s start at @laemmle.com 4/23. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/a-va...

Mexicans, at least millennials like me, we grew up watching a mix of classic American cartoons, Japanese animation, European animation, and contemporary cartoons (Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network) all on broadcast TV. Large swaths of the population consume a lot of varied animation.

3 years after playing at SXSW, the Colombian film A VANISHING FOG opens in US theaters tomorrow. It’s a surrealist cinematic collage about a man guarding an otherworldly land from conflict/greed. The imagery is striking. I reviewed it for @ebertvoices.bsky.social: www.rogerebert.com/reviews/a-va...

Watching THE DEVIL SMOKES got me thinking about how over the last decade Mexican filmmakers have been incredibly successful in telling stories about childhood and those pivotal moments when children become aware of the unfairness of the world, when they grow up 🇲🇽 Here’s a thread:

"While many films made in Latin America incorporate magical realist flourishes, A VANISHING FOG seamlessly weaves these elements into its aesthetic and ideological fabric." Read @carlosfilm.bsky.social's review:

@carlosfilm.bsky.social At my local Cinemex in Mexico City, Carlos: The Legend of Ochi poster features your quote! 🔥

HOLA FRIDA, the Canadian animated feature about Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is cute with a few sequences that go deeper into the artist’s relationship with death than I was expecting from a film clearly made for very young audiences. Not revolutionary, but a good intro to her.

I adored the Mexican film THE DEVIL SMOKES by Ernesto Martínez Bucio. Set in ‘90s Mexico City, it observes five young siblings living with their grandmother. It oscillates between innocent mischief, otherworldly touches, and the sorrow of being forced to grow up 🇲🇽

I’m in SF this weekend for the San Francisco International Film Festival as part of the Cine Latino jury. Excited to watch some promising Latin American and U.S. Latino films. Always a pleasure and an honor to be considered for these opportunities.

The Palestinian film THE TEACHER opens in LA today. It’s a flawed, but still potent and timely drama shot in the West Bank about an educator holding on to hope and humanity amid the daily devastation. I reviewed it for @latimes.com Hope you might give it a read: www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

quite possibly the most stunning poster of the year for one of the very best movies of the year.

Found the new take on THE WEDDING BANQUET very enjoyable. It finds a LGBTQI+ community with concerns different from those in the ‘90s and some that remain the same. Youn Yuh-jung as a stern but loving matriarch is fantastic. Here’s my @variety.com review. variety.com/2025/film/re...

Obligatory reminder that tomorrow night I’ll be in Pasadena with the one and only @timgrierson.bsky.social, talking GANDOLFINI at Vroman’s Bookstore! This is the one I’m most nervous about because there’s no movie so I’m the sole draw! Please come to this, lol

MEMORY LANE could also be the title of a Cronenberg film about a post apocalyptic world where street racers fuel their cars with their own memories. They plug their brains to the cars’ engines via some ghastly tech and drive until their last memory is forgotten, all fuel gone.

Great piece on beautiful craftsmanship. #ilovemovies

EEPHUS is now available on VOD, one of the best movies of the year so far, even for someone like me who is not into baseball. I interviewed director Carson Lund about the making of it and his love for the unhurried sport. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

I’m definitely back in LA

Watched Olivier Assayas’ most recent film, SUSPENDED TIME, on a flight (hasn’t been officially released here) a verbose pandemic dramedy that fans of his work will enjoy as he gets into inspirations and personal details as he tracks 4 characters confined in a countryside home.

Conor has an amazing VHS collection, but more importantly, he is incredibly passionate about physical media and video stores. He made a wonderful zine about LA’s video stores past and present and has become a historian on the subject. Follow him on here and on IG @vhs_spectacular

Retro Pop-Up Market! VHS, Vinyl, Toys & more! Come grab a “VHS Spectacular” sticker! Open till 5pm behind Be Kind Video in Burbank 📼

The only SNOW WHITE live action film I care about is BLANCANIEVES by Pablo Berger (Oscar-nominated for ROBOT DREAMS). A black-and-white, silent retelling of the fairytale set in early 1900s Spain with Maribel Verdú as the equivalent of the Evil Queen.

Sylvain Chomet’s THE MAGNIFICENT LIFE OF MARCEL PAGNOL will premiere at #Cannes2025 as a Special Screening, one of the movies I’m most looking forward to this year.
