Always puzzling when people ask what if we decarbonize and India and China don’t. They will decarbonize for the same reason we will. Because the low carbon options are better and cheaper than the fossil fueled powered ones, and staying the course will cost a lot more than switching

160 students across 5 rooms in 3 buildings. Did it really have to snow today?

Repeating my annual experience of walking into my students exam room to answer questions, and immediately being asked to stop and show my ID to be allowed to write the exam.

There's a lot of talk about Canada Geese and whether they're good and my answer is Yes.

We're Hiring for 8 Positions!! Interested in conducting research on nature based solutions in Canada's coastal ecosystems? Blue Carbon Canada is recruiting 3 PDFs & 5 PhD students for Sept. 2025 in partnership w @wwfcanada.org www.bluecarboncanada.ca/were-recruit... Open to int'l scholars Pls repost

Tempted to save this survey as a teaching example of “leading questions” 🤦🏻‍♀️

When Poilievre talks about ending "woke ideology" in research, this is what he means.

Creating things with my hands has been such an important personal ray of light lately (Thanks to my local restaurant for letting me take home oyster shells for a craft project 😂)

Teaching kids about climate change is not what causes climate anxiety. *Not doing anything about climate change* is what causes climate anxiety. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/c...

Was not expecting to open the main CBC page this morning and see this! In today’s climate, I feel our message is even more relevant than even just a few months ago when the interview was recorded. www.cbc.ca @christelvaneck.bsky.social @lydiamessling.bsky.social

“I think this is the first time a Cdn poli has crossed that line to officially say they want to interfere to control research topics. It could be a very terrible time for us.” Sound familiar? In Cdn election, Poilievre vows to end ’woke ideology’ in science funding www.science.org/content/arti...

Amy is a top-notch investigative journalist and I fully vouch for her. She will do due diligence and hold your story with care.

Dr. Gunter is correct. All Conservative MPs are antichoice. All Liberals, regardless of their personal views, agree to vote prochoice on all bills. Our choice couldn’t be more clear. www.arcc-cdac.ca/media/anti-c... #Vote #Carney

Dear Canadian geophysics folks; 1. Normally seismology is Sidney-only, so the option of Vancouver office is a neat tidbit 2. Federal jobs apps are a LONG process. Timing not great? It might be perfect by the time they can hire! 3. Flag the job ID to ensure you don’t miss HR emails.

Bad media science takes can kill off whole species. Gene edited puppies are NOT actually dire wolves, any more than an especially hair mouse is a mammoth. Endangered Species Act is NOT rendered moot by this publicity stunt www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

🧵Poilievere will end ‘woke’ ideology in science. This isn’t esoteric: “if samples from both sexes are not analyzed, the chances decrease that any discovery made will apply to both men and women.” This impacts research on diseases, treatments/ drugs. It’s dangerous. thetyee.ca/Opinion/2025...

We all complain about ‘reviewer 2’ (sometimes deservedly!) but occasionally you get the absolute kindest, most supportive reviewer comments. If you’re out there and reviewed a big grant of mine recently, *thank you* for absolutely making my day with your thoughtful words.

Urban fieldwork sometimes means setting up your equipment on the sidewalk 😂. Backyard bird data coming soon!

ICF has supported the National Climate Assessment and the IPCC for nearly two decades with professionalism & integrity. Yesterday, ICF's contract to support NCA was cancelled. All federal staff details for OSTP + USGCRP were already returned to their agencies. There's no one left to work on NCA.

Prioritized setting aside an afternoon for spring fieldwork this extremely busy week (yay!), and of course this is the weather we get 😂 (at least it’s sunny)

This is why the media’s credulous boosterism for Colossal is so dangerous. “Innovation, not regulation” is tech-bro propaganda. It’s the false promise that any problem can be solved with some future breakthrough that will enable the same people who got us into this to profit from the solutions.

'How do you want to see your city?' This short animation film shows how our choices have a big impact on the city we live in. And what it could look like if we make different choices. A production by @gemeentedenhaag.bsky.social and Den Haag Duurzaam.

Oh FFS, that company did not "bring back the dire wolf". And furthermore... We must stop and reverse biodiversity loss *of >1 million existing species*, not go on a PR-driven wild goose chase to bring back a few extinct ones. #DireWolf #Deextinction www.newscientist.com/article/2475...

The rationale for this cancellation is climate denial. There is no dressing it up, there is no tiptoeing around it. Yet climate change doesn’t care if we believe it. It will destroy our homes, multiply insurance rates, wreak economic havoc and more — regardless of our opinions or voting record.

Extinction is one of the most depressing things there is. I totally get wanting to reverse it. BUT. There are things you can be doing right now to PREVENT further extinctions. Consider how you're using your property (even if you rent). Can you create habitat on the area you control? This helps!

Urgently reposting! University leadership need to actively check the SEVIS database every day (studyinthestates.dhs.gov/sevis-help-hub). Ask your chair to commit to it. Yesterday, UW discovered 9 visa cancellations & only found out b/c they ran a status check. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

As the Ford government prepares to tear up key cycling infrastructure in #Toronto and #OttCity considers its Transportation Master Plan, now is a good time to re-share this summary of research on cycling infrastructure—including the myth that widening roads eases traffic. www.cbc.ca/news/science...

Encouraging news I would've missed if it weren't for Liz's weekly update: "The Rutgers University Senate passed a resolution proposing a Mutual Defense Compact in which members of the Big Ten conference will pool funding and legal, policy, and communications capacity and expertise." More of this!

Voting isn’t about finding the perfect candidate — it’s like choosing a bus route. Pick the one that gets you closest to your destination. You can walk the rest of the way. Remember: there are no private cars in politics. 🍁 #ResearchersVote #VotonsRecherche #Elxn45 #Vote #Election2025

Oh my, this photo combines so many of my favourite things. Urban forests, creative re-use, bikes 🤩 Just one more reason to add Utrecht to the sabbatical tour list... (plus then I can visit @nfrantzeskaki.bsky.social 🤔)

(It's also grant season for 🇨🇦 faculty - same comments to you, and to me. Icecream, plants, or vice-of-choice for everyone)

It's grant result season for 🇨🇦 students. If successful: well deserved & take time to celebrate your achievements! If unsuccessful: you're in good company & take time to celebrate your hard work & putting yourself out there! In my experience, icecream or a new plant is great in either scenario.

This piece should have explained that Canada’s tricouncil research structure—which funds the bulk of our discovery and medical research—is underfunded, making it challenging to absorb an influx of US scientists. No political leader has proposed to increase CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC research budgets. 🧪
