A Roman funerary scene (from just-post the Pompeiian earthquake of 62CE, hence the rubble) that’s appropriate for today. From ‘Amarantus and his Neighbours’, illustrated by me for CSCP and @carolawrence.bsky.social, based on research by @pompei79.bsky.social and others.

April's book is Pantheon by @carolawrence.bsky.social & beautifully illustrated by @flaroh.bsky.social We meet on Sunday 27th April at 7pm (BST), 2pm (EDT) on Zoom. I'll send the Zoom link to the mailing list; make sure you're on it (subscribepage.com/greekorlatinquiz). #Ancientbluesky 📚🏺

Christian Story is a promising new #YouTube channel devoted to Church History & Theology. The first video covers the first 150 years of Christianity with excellent narration and animation. Pliny the Younger gets a nice mention, too. 👏 #PlinyTheYounger #ChurchHistory www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM8G...

An inspirational (& delicious) working breakfast with a friend & writer I admire hugely, Stephen Davies. His middle grade book #AncientEgyptianSleepover is a massive hit with schools but his YA books deserve recognition too! #Egyptians #AncientEgypt stephendavies.co.uk/young-adult/

Just a few of the amazing Classicists at the #Mythica launch last night at Daunts Books. The book by Emily Hauser is wonderful & now available to buy in hardback and kindle! www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

FREE audiobooks! Choose one with a beautiful cover by @flaroh.bsky.social They're mythic retellings of stories from Virgil's Aeneid, perfect for reluctant teen readers, those in a hurry or anyone who loves Greek & Roman mythology. Just go to: audiobooksunleashed.com

Arlene and Edith are two powerhouses of classics, especially bringing it to people who haven’t previously had access to it. This is an incredible project of theirs - I’m thrilled it’s going so well! www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

The fragrant Emily Hauser (shown here with Helen of Troy, both beautiful even in bad lighting) tells us about #Cassandra and SO much more, in #TheAncients episode 534. Her forthcoming book #Mythica is going to be a real game-changer! @emilyhauser.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/54G7...

I assumed the title 'Bad Boy of Athens' referred to Alcibiades... but apparently it's Euripides! I can't wait to read these essays by @danielmendelsohn.bsky.social combining pop culture and Classics, two of my fave things. (Three, if you count Mendelsohn! 😊) amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

‘What if we marooned the male cast of Love Island and one of their dads with only a stack of beach towels for clothing, and also they were all psychopaths?’ Read my pal Laura's review of #TheReturn, a new film about Odysseus! 🫣 laurajenkinsonbrown.co.uk/2025/04/11/t... #Odyssey #MythRetelling #Homer

WOW, these baskets are about 9,500 years old! 🤯 Look like they were made yesterday rather than by hunter-gatherers during the Mesolithic! Made of esparto grass, they were found inside the Cueva de Los Murciélagos (Cave of bats), Spain. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #Archaeology

So much fun to go to a preview screening of #TheReturn at the British Museum. My Odyssey-loving pal @lejenksbrown.bsky.social and I chanced upon 2 legendary curators in the forecourt, Tom Harrison & Irving Finkel. Then the film plus Q&A and a mini-masterclass in acting by Ralph Fiennes!

Comms people - looks like an ace job going at the british academy. As a book person my mind immediately describes the salary as a "six figure deal"...

Attaching a baby to a spear to save its life! What an amazing scene from Virgil’s Aeneid when he tells the tale of Camilla. And one that artists have really struggled to portray! Get the whole story in my short retelling of Camilla’s life and death here: www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

A fast read (or listen) for reluctant or busy teens who love myth retellings. Camilla, Queen of the Silver Arrow is a short, sad tale from Virgil's Aeneid. Now available as an audiobook. #romanmyth #fastread #shortchapters #cliffhangers #femalefriendship #mythology www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

I am so excited that the audiobook of #Camilla is out now! A great companion to my retelling of Nisus & Euryalus and also read by my brother, it's another short & bittersweet retelling of a Roman myth from Virgil's #Aeneid. I have FREE VOUCHERS for anyone who asks. 🧡 www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

This large #Etruscan terracotta figure of Juno Curitis was probably a cult statue, on display within the temple of the goddess' sanctuary at Celle (finished on all sides). Presented as a patrician matron, with a gorgeously patterned peplum, and bejeweled diadem. 🏺 #ancientbluesky ca. 380 BCE. 📸 me

I took a break from the ancient world to write this 4-book series set in the American West in 1862. With a quirky gender-ambiguous kid detective plus cameos by real 'Sagebrush Writers' like Mark Twain & Dan De Quille, it was huge fun to research & write. carolinelawrence.com/series/pinke...

When P.K. Pinkerton flees desperados to a Nevada mining town in 1862, things look bad. But P.K. finds allies in a young reporter named Mark Twain, a gambler called Poker Face Jace & others. Cosy kids’ crime, beautifully read by @patvoicelondon.bsky.social 12+ carolinelawrence.com/series/pinke...

Isn't she beautiful? I love the cover of my retelling of the myth of Camilla. @flaroh.bsky.social shows her in the style of a Greek red-figure vase. Camilla is an Amazon-type virgin huntress from Virgil's Aeneid. Now available as an eBook with audiobook coming soon! www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

Some mythological females (along with some dudes) by @flaroh.bsky.social from #Pantheon, now only £2.99 in Kindle format! All of these fab illustrations are based on vases you can see in the #BritishMuseum. #Hebe #SophilosDinos #Thetis #Peleus #Medusa #Perseus #Hermes #Pantheon #GreekMythology

The hardback of #Pantheon, my handbook to the Greek and Roman gods, beautifully illustrated by @flaroh.bsky.social, usually retails for £22... But currently, over at Amazon UK, the Kindle (eBook) version is only £2.99! www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

What inspired me to write 'The Thieves of Ostia'? A dog barking in the night-time, (like this Molossian hound in the British Museum), a rock crystal dice, also in the British Museum, and Nancy Drew mystery stories. Is it any wonder I spend so much time in the British Museum? 😀 #RomanMysteries

Translating epic poetry is not as easy as you might think. 😁 A wonderful interview with Daniel Mendelsohn on the nuts & bolts of translating ancient Greek. His new translation of #TheOdyssey is out soon! #Homer #Odyssey #translation @leschepod.bsky.social podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/l...

This Pompeian masterpiece has a scene from Virgil's Aeneid XII.383ff. Iapyx tries to remove a barbed arrowhead from Aeneas' thigh as Venus arrives with a healing herb. The painter shows Aeneas enduring terrible pain with stoic resolve. From Reg VII.1, possibly the villa of a merchant named Siricus.

Did you like the #RomanMysteries? Ever wonder what happened to Flavia et al? They appear as adults in my 4-book #RomanQuests series about some children who run away to Roman Britain & meet a red-haired cutpurse who claims to be Boudicca’s great-granddaughter. carolinelawrence.com/series/roman...

I love this image of Athena lovingly receiving her baby... But wait! How could the virgin goddess become a mother? To find out, read Pantheon, my companion to the Greek and Roman gods & goddesses, illustrated by @flaroh.bsky.social 🥰 Oh and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! carolinelawrence.com/books/panthe...

I love this image by @greernadeau.bsky.social who put my book cover in front of a famous sculpture in the Louvre for her review of my retelling of the myth of Nisus and Euryalus. It has just come out in audio version & if you'd like a voucher for a free download, just message me!

Krish’s great review of Escape from Rome starts with a quote from Epictetus. In the interview, I tell about the first of my 4 Roman Quests & how grown up characters from my #RomanMysteries made their way into the books! #RomanBritain #HistoricalFiction #Kidsbooks podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/k...

Gian Lorenzo Bernini carved this sculpture of Aeneas fleeing Troy (with Anchises on his back & Ascanius following behind) when he was only 20 years old! It's carefully based on Aeneid 2.717 ff #Aeneas #Anchises #Virgil #Vergil #Aeneid #Bernini #Rome #GalleriaBorghese #WikimediaCommons #Troy

Interested in my new audio version of Nisus and Euryalus, The Night Raid, a retelling of a story from Virgil's Aeneid? If so, please let me know! I have a couple of vouchers for free downloads if you're willing to review it. It's very short, just over an hour long and written especially for teens.

What fun it was to collaborate with my brother Dan in producing an audiobook of my retelling of the story of Nisus and Euryalus from Virgil's Aeneid. Thanks also to @flaroh.bsky.social for another beautiful cover. www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...

I had so much fun creating this book, How to Write a Great Story for ages 8-80. Writing should be FUN! There are tons of tips & tropes and best of all it's beautifully illustrated by the amazing @linzie.bsky.social ! #HowToWriteAGreatStory #WritingTips #AmWriting carolinelawrence.com/series/how-t...

Brilliant update on the methods, politics and (yes) reasons for excavating Pompeii in 2025 by @pompei79.bsky.social & Steve Ellis on @romepodcast.bsky.social podcast. 👏 Some wonderful insights by both archaeologists. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/e...
