I don’t think this is a profound observation on my part but it is certainly remarkable how much of the ongoing situation seems to be centered around trying to find a way to shoehorn AI into the government and make it an indispensable utility before the bubble bursts

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress

I'm working on my dissertation today & reviewing a curriculum that I helped to design & then taught this summer on AI in education, surveillance, & social media. I thought I'd share this lesson on exploring AI & student monitoring software, online proctoring, & weapons detection. 🧵 edushare.ing/3s

We had to take the cat to the vet to pass on yesterday after a long battle with kidney disease. We knew it was coming, but we hoped for longer. She let us know it was time. She was and is so loved. This post is to let you know why I've been quiet lately. I'm sad but fine.

Sure would be nice if the U.S. continued funding stuff like “vaccines for pancreatic cancer.”

Properly funding public education is just what the Republicans do not want to do.

Proud to work with my comrades @scarleteen.bsky.social on making sure youth have access to quality, accurate, affirming sex ed. They've done it on a shoestring budget since 1998! Please vote for them at Project for Awesome for a shot at a transformative funding opportunity.

"Whether we’re trying to create a giving circle or build relationships with our neighbors or organize an action or just gather some friends together for soup, we are all flush with how-tos and lists of actions and toolkits. None of these alone will flip the switch in us required to act."

Guest lecture today (talking about designing with kids for HCDE 315) went well but otherwise it has been a "pajamas back on at 6:30pm" kind of day. We did get to discuss our super early digital civic engagement game concept today though, so.

Cruz wants to cancel 20 NSF grants awarded to Cornell b/c they are "woke", by which he means they study marginalized populations or include them in activities. Largest by far ($9M) is infrastructure grant to improve science ed in rural NY -- so, mostly low-income white kids whose parents voted GOP.

We have improbably gotten five seasons of original run and three seasons of reboot off some very speechifying criminals for exactly this reason.

I think it's worth repeating plainly that a federal judge halted Musk's federal funding freeze nearly two weeks ago but funds are still very much being frozen in violation of the court order.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

This infrastructure and federal spending also built up Silicon Valley up from scratch

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Me: I need to work on this design session and also finalizing an IRB Brain: Nope, only alternating between Abracadabra and Denial is a River

…Commander Vimes didn’t like the phrase ‘The innocent have nothing to fear’, believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like ‘The innocent have nothing to fear’… - Terry Pratchett, Snuff

I'm very behind on CR and it's my birthday so I will be largely offline tonight. Enjoy the C3 finale and be nice to each other. I have a ttrpg co-design session this weekend though. I'll catch up some day...

The AHA & the @oah.org have released a joint statement on the presidential executive order “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K–12 Schooling.” “We reject the premise that it is ‘anti-American’ or ‘subversive’ to learn the full history of the United States.” 🗃️

"As advocates for information literacy, academic librarians should be explaining why ChatGPT’s output has introduced a qualitatively different type of misinformation."

There's never any obligation to formally playtest—but if you do read or play the character options and have thoughts on them, we'd love to take those thoughts and use them to make the next versions even better! ✨

Want to share some points from the @indivisible.org action call earlier tonight. Most urgent: Contact your senators (Dem AND GOP) and tell them to VOTE NO on Russell Vought (architect of Project 2025) running the Office of Management and Budget (the same one that was all over the news this week).

This is great news! Keep up the fight! A lot of these EOs are illegal, and need to be beaten in court.

New post: Ask yourself now what you’re willing to be fired over familyinequality.wordpress.com/2025/02/02/a...

From inside HHS, a court order sent around this morning telling agencies they can’t pause spending:

Well, food is about to get a lot more expensive, and I manage stress by info-dumping, so I'm gonna share some of the survival strategies I learned spending my first 30 years food-insecure: First: Cooking in large quantities and freezing some for later is more cost-effective than cooking every day

This week, I want to do a thread each day signal boosting creators of different groups, particularly those groups who are being targeted by government. Today, I would love to hear from Creators of Color. If you are a CoC and you have a project to push, PLEASE POST BELOW. Include link, please!

Montgomery County Public Schools comes out and tells Trump to pound sand with his EO telling schools that they have to discriminate against transgender students. This is how you refuse to comply.

“We @wtgrantfdn.bsky.social have no plans to change the way we do business. We have no plans to change our funding priorities, which are reducing inequality in youth outcomes and improving the way evidence from research is used in policy and practice.” That’s what I told @insidephilanthropy.com …

This thread will be stories of how people hold the line--continue to behave responsibly and ethically.

I did K-12 at MCPS, and while no school is perfect there's a reason lots of families want to send their kids to school there.

Every safety regulation was written in blood, frequently with a body count higher than one, and it’s not political to put the blame on people who want to “move fast and break things” when they start breaking human lives.

Afaik the freezes on foreign aid, NIH and NSF funding and activities are in place If your senators are Dems, tell them this freeze is killing tb patients and ppl who live near land mines. If they’re Repubs, tell them it’s endangering counter narcotics and trafficking investigations

Libraries are my favorite!!!!

Love that Substack decided it didn’t like everyone forgetting it is also a committed 2025 techbro so it had to do a blog to remind everyone.

I love this. #2: "Make people soup and do not stop inviting them over for soup! Be a reason for living."

Since it's still early in the quarter/semester, if you have any new grad students, research assistants, etc., particularly at public universities, but also academia as a whole, it's always good to go over data retention policies, FOIA, records requests, communications privacy, etc.

UMass has a new webpage to track federal actions as a community resource www.umass.edu/news/federal...

* sigh * * pulls out the N-C logo Bitch Planet mug from @kellysue.bsky.social * Welp.

Folks. I am still telling jokes on the internet like a doofus. I want to explain why I am telling jokes like a doofus when people, especially marginalized people but also everyone else, are being slowly pulled apart by the most ghastly people imaginable. The answer is, for my mental health. 1/

Did you know many #accessibility features designed for other issues can also help reduce cognitive load in games? High contrast modes can make it easier to see useful items in visually overwhelming scenes, and volume sliders for different types of sound help players focus on important sounds.
