One more time for my friends in the back. COI implies being conflicted bt duty and personal gain. This is straight up naked interest.

Gee, wonder what they’ll be talking about

I had some thoughts for my quarterly #CivMilSky column in Parameters about the role of the military in democratic backsliding. Basically, we don't know nearly enough, and it's more important than ever. press.armywarcollege.edu/parameters/v...

I unfortunately won’t be at ISA this year (childcare!!!) but you should definitely join Risa and the gang!

Re-upping this podcast I did with American University’s Sharon Weiner for absolutely no reason whatsoever. warroom.armywarcollege.edu/podcasts/civ...

This is a huge problem for transparency and accountability inside DOD

Printed this out last week for some background reading on my next project and now I’m just sad.

Just spitballing, but things that could happen today: *Court injunction protecting USAID *Dems demand hearings on Musk's role *Someone introduce articles of impeachment *Dem officeholders go to USAID offices with USAID workers *Refuse to conduct any more Senate confirmations until this is resolved

I had been curious as to why I hadn't seen the "Fork in the Road" e-mail in my work inbox, only to realize that Outlook had auto-sorted it into my junk folder. Make of that what you will.

The power of public opinion

Highly unlikely. Political polarization has essentially destroyed the rally effect. It may increase support amongst his party, but that’s it.

Can’t wait to read this!

A podcast where parents try to explain their children’s PhD

Just inhaled a bag of sea salt potato chips, and I don't even like potato chips. But no, I'm not stress eating, why do you ask?

People forgot what this was like. For 4 yrs, every day it was something new, something that had to be debated, some *insane* proposal we had to talk about. People were EXHAUSTED. And now it's back.

If you're in an evacuation zone in SoCal, please check in with any disabled/aging neighbors you have to see if they need help evacuating.

Ahhh, the west coast. Where football starts at 10a with a mimosa, rather than 1p and a vague concern about the effects of day drinking.

In 2019, I covered a government shutdown through the eyes of Coast Guard families, whose paychecks were withheld. One woman I interviewed for that story cried while speaking to me. Another said she had cried repeatedly. Real people get caught in the middle in these moments.

Mass resignation, and mass cancellations, are the only responsible reactions to this new policy. Soon-Shiong is deliberately undermining the journalistic integrity of the Times and readers must know it cannot be trusted.

I will never stop being aghast that the United States built a higher education system that was literally the envy of the entire world—our bitterest political enemies nonetheless sent their children to us to be educated, it was so good—& then just decided to systematically, ruthlessly dismantle it

Public opinion is mostly not people deciding what they think on their own. It's mostly regular people taking cues from trusted elites, often overcoming their first impression. Hegseth gaining support among Republicans is because right-wing elites are defending him. Similar shift happened re: Jan. 6.

If we weren't at such a weird moment in history, the collapse of Assad's regime would be widely understood as a huge success for the Biden administration, which pursued sanctions on Russia and Iran as well as Syria, armed Ukraine and thus weakened Russia, and supported Syrian democrats and activists

Per the comments here, any kid who survives a potentially fatal illness where there is a vaccine available whose parents decided not to vaccinate them should have the power to sue their parents into oblivion for pain and suffering.

My picks the year: @queenofthinair.bsky.social's On Obedience and Walzer's Just and Unjust Wars. Anybody want to guess what I'm thinking about these days... warontherocks.com/2024/12/the-...

New, from me: Trump and his Secretary of Defense are proposing a purge of military officers. To understand what this means, I talked to military experts and looked at Trump's accusations of "woke Generals." Bottom line: The purge represents a huge democratic risk.🧵 open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Reminder! The deadline is tomorrow!!

My latest op-ed has just been published in Foreign Policy, where I argue that, as shocking as it may seem, South Korea's martial law has always been a possibility due to its troubled civil-military relations. foreignpolicy.com/2024/12/06/s...

It's not just litigation that will help to stymie assaults on democracy and dem norms. Public (and proactive) signaling, public pressure, congressional pressure, and institutional attention-to-detail will also be important to ensuring rights stay intact. Trump isn't immune from the laws of politics.

What Soon-Shiong did was not just an "insult"--being insulted is not a great reason to resign. What the LAT owner did was an assault on journalistic integrity & deeply undermined trust the LAT for news and well-informed opinion. THAT deserves a resignation. harrylitman.substack.com/p/why-i-just...

God bless work from home days. Things actually get done.

Hey #civmilsky #milsky and military historians! We have EXTENDED the deadline for conference proposals for the CMRC's annual CMRC Conference! The theme this year is, "Civil-Military Relations Across the Globe." New deadline is Dec 9! Apply today here: cmrc.armywarcollege.edu/outreach-pro...

Tom is right on the principle here. It’s a bad look and makes things a lot harder for the country going forward. But I also understand the very human notion that he wants to spend his remaining time with his remaining son. Love of family has been a defining feature of Biden, so I’m not surprised.

These framings are so strange. This isn't just a "pick" as though the spot was vacant to be filled. This is the overt firing of the Director of the FBI before his term was set to end in order to make way for a political loyalist. Let's call it what it is: a purge.
