If you work for a bank, a credit union, a fintech, the Federal Reserve, OCC, or the FDIC, and you want to talk to me securely, please reach out to me here: Signal: @carterpape.58 As you are probably aware, you shouldn’t use work devices or networks to do this.

More than 130 CISA employees have been laid off as part of a larger government purge, DHS spokesperson tells me.

A teen DOGE staffer recently given access to government systems worked at a startup known for hiring convicted hackers. Someone using a Telegram handle associated with him also solicited a cyberattack-for-hire service in 2022. All raising questions about his vetting. www.wired.com/story/edward...

good report by @joemenn.bsky.social of @washingtonpost.com. Cybersecurity as a policy issue looks like it might escape the retaliatory scrutiny of the Trump administration. so far. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Don’t abuse FOIA as a form of protest. This tactic will slow down public reporting by media outlets, nongovernmental watchdogs, and other entities that do valuable work. It will tie up dedicated FOIA officers as they respond to those groups, not an entire department or bureau.

Please please please do not start using FOIA systems as a form of protest. No one outside of a handful of FOIA officers at most will ever see it, and it'll just clog things up for anyone actually trying squeeze valuable information out of the government.

If you work for the Federal Reserve, OCC, or FDIC, and you want to talk about the cybersecurity impacts of Trump and Musk activity, please reach out to me here: Signal: @carterpape.58 As you are probably aware, you shouldn’t use work devices or networks to do this.

There are four living species of echidna. Three of them, all native to New Guinea, are considered threatened by the IUCN. One species went 62 years without a confirmed sighting, until 2023, when it popped up on a trail camera.

here's my alt account, for all my less professional thoughts

You could feel the earthquakes in Davis. There’s virtually no wind today; these waves in the pool were caused by the ground. I heard but did not see the water slosh out of the pool (far side of the photo). First photo taken at 10:52 a.m. PT. Second photo taken 15 minutes later

The irony, it burns. Yes, there are tradeoffs to end to end encryption, but it's wild for the FBI to start agreeing with basically the entire security community that it's an often-necessary security message. www.nbcnews.com/tech/securit...

Trump Picks Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary

stuff I wish someone had told me before wisdom tooth surgery (this will be as gross as it sounds):

If anybody has data on how well calibrated prediction markets are, please let me know. This is the closest I could get: www.forbes.com/sites/george... The data in there focuses on comparing polls to prediction markets. What I want is data about how over- or under-confident prediction markets are.

from first impressions, the things that most impress me about @bsky.app are 1. @moderation.bsky.app — this is the way to do moderation. configure your own damn rules. 2. I get to authenticate myself with DNS records (i.e. verifying I own carterpape.com) 3. nice mix of federation and centralization
