I'd guess same thing he was thinking when he wrote superman batman generations where: An old Superman kisses a time traveling 14 year old Lana Lang Batman, who has become immortal, marries Superman's granddaughter

The Doom Patrol Fans donā€™t like Byrne, The Wonder Woman Fans donā€™t like Byrne, The Superman Fans donā€™t like Byrne; Dude must have had something great at Marvel because Iā€™ve heard pretty much nothing but disdain for his DC Work

Do you mean Amethyst? She has the color palate for sure.

I think that wraps up the cast we know - as well as some details about the comic Creature Commandos. They're not a super prevalent group of characters so Gunn's twists and turns will be generally welcome imo. Except Circe. Don't mess her up please. Anyway, thanks for reading along! šŸ§µ over

Lastly, my GOAT, Circe, foe to Wonder Woman. She typically is a playfully arrogant and chaotic spellcaster ā€“ but she can back up all the shit she talks. Nobody schemes like her.

Thereā€™s also Princess Ilana Rostovic ā€“ a completely new character so anything goes characterization wise

The Weasel is a wildcard honestly and Iā€™d rather know less about him going in. He has nothing to do with the CC, nor does Dr. Phosphorous. Dr. P has a decently interesting history in the DC universe, but heā€™s mostly a Batman villain who wields nuclear power

The GI robot was a series of bots created by the US government so it makes sense to be under Waller. He's got wayyy more personality in the show and I kinda love it.

Nina is seems pretty similar, but she isn't the "genius" behind the other members like she is in the comics. The Bride seems similar personality wise, but her backstory seems quite different.

The decision to use Rick Flagg senior is an interesting one. Having a human handler was the move for the classic team, but not for the N52 version - but this is clearly supposed to be a connection to The Suicide Squad Movie. His comic counterpart was in the original Suicide Squad.

Frankenstein has proved to be somewhat popular, he pops up in Batman, Superman & Sideways, he creates the Gotham City Monsters, and works with Justice League Dark.

Iā€™m wondering if the team will somehow fight an evil ā€œclassic version of the teamā€ like in Gotham City Monsters since Griffith, Velcoro, and Ahten are missing.

This run seems to be the loose inspiration for Gunnā€™s CC due to the inclusion of Nina and Bride of Frankenstein. But Franky is the main character of this book - more serious, has a thing with Nina, and has a less disgusting relationship with The Bride.

It introduces to the team a black lagoon like scientist (Nina Mazursky) who created the rest of the team based off of Frankensteinā€™s Experiment. SHADE works for Father Time (someone who is reborn in a new body every new years). They fight supernatural threats.

In 2011 the New 52 Reboot happened. The Creature Commandos are now a modern team under S.H.A.D.E. In this version Morrisonā€™s Frankenstein and Wife are agents of S.H.A.D.E. but Franky is saddled with a new version of the Creature Commando team
comment in response to post
This version works for an agency called Super Human Advanced Defense Executive (S.H.A.D.E.) as does his wife, (also she has four arms!) The main book is excellent but I think Franky ends up being its largest impact, appearing in Infinite and Final Crisis.

Back to 2007 - Grant Morrison wrote an event/book called Seven Soldiers in which Frankenstein, the ACTUAL Frankenstein is introduced as a hellboy like figure. A gruff badass who quotes poetry ā€“ unrelated from the previous mute Frankenstein.

In the more canon version of what happened, their rocket was captured by Superman villain Braniac ā€“ later saved in 2009 by Kandorians going through Braniacs ship and joining the human defense squad in the modern day
comment in response to post
This version is pretty short, the team landed and then had one adventure on a desert planet, and after this they were retconned and this story treated like it never existed.

In 2000 the team was back with an 8 issue series (non canon). It brought Frankenstein, Velcro (now Velcoro), and Griffith into the modern day, replacing Shrieve with Lucius Hunter, J.A.K.E. with J.A.K.E. 2, adding Bog-Man, Aten (Mummy), and Gunner Mackey as a cyborg.
comment in response to post
Their end: For the crime of acting too human (lol???) the US army was going to kill them and instead launched them in an ICBM at Hitler, but the rocket went out of control and they got stuck in space for decades

Later in the comic they come across Dr. Myrna Rhodes (a gorgon) and J.A.K.E. (GI Robot) who joins them. The comic revels in its pulpy and lite-horror tone. It kind of straddles the line whether or not itā€™s campy.
comment in response to post
The OG roster was a group of genetically modified soldiers and CO Lt. Shrieve, a relentless bully. The team was made by Project M. It includes Warren Griffith (werewolf), Sgt. Vincent Velcro (vampire), Pvt. Elliot "Lucky" Taylor (a Frankenstein-like monster).

The first creature commandos were created in 1980 by JM DeMatteis, basically Universal Monsters vs. Nazis in WW2. It was a wartime pulp comic. In every issue the CC would fight regular or magic axis threats, be mocked by their officer, but try to be good people anyway
comment in response to post
Your description is apt -Tonally this is nothing like the teams ever been. The entire lineup aside from GI Robot is different than the ā€œcreature commandosā€. Itā€™s similar-ish to Agents of SHADE but in that Franky is pretty composed and speaks in rhyme, where here heā€™s a bit of an angry horndog.

i like it. animation looks good and itā€™s violent and funny the way youā€™d expect gunn to do such things. Iā€™m def gonna watch the rest as it drops
