Once, in Gorongosa NP, I thought that I had found Halucinogenia, a near-mythical Cambrian animal with spikes on its back. The creature turned out to be a caterpillar of Acridotarsa melipecta who lives as an inquiline in the colonies of the termite Schedorhinotermes lamanianus. Still cool, though.

Sure, Google's data centers consume tens of billions of litres of water yearly and emit more carbon dioxide than many nations, but on the other hand, you can look up Uranus and AI will show you a picture of Neptune. Never in the history of humanity, have we reached such speeds in making mistakes

Cribbed from LinkedIn.

For years, officials in the Czech Republic had pushed a dam project to protect a river south of Prague, and the critically endangered species living in it. But the project stalled. In the meantime, the beavers of Prague simply built dams themselves, saving the government some 1.2 million euros.

Per their request, we decided to go for it. I changed the title to "The strain on antioxidant publishing" and did a bunch of ctrl find+replace for words like "publisher" with "gut niche" and just sent it back. Find the paper here: direct.mit.edu/qss/article/... 1/3

This is significant. There is more than enough #food in the world for everyone. But not the right diverse, nutritious foods for everyone to be #healthy. There's too many starchy staples. But not enough fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, & seeds. Our #foodsystem puts quantity over quality.

Quem aí conhece esse bichinho?

The Papua New Guinea Courier is in rare form.

[new paper] EuPPollNet: A European Database of Plant-Pollinator Networks onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Another wonderful paper of @joseblanuza.bsky.social making open more than >1500 networks and looking at their properties. Come for the data, stay for the cool figures!

What better way to celebrate the Year of the Wood Snake than by reading about how paradise tree snakes fly? Yep, snakes fly. They take off with a jump, shape themselves into a flattened, undulating "wing body", and glide down some 8.3m. 🧪 🌍 🐍 Paper by J. Socha: dx.doi.org/10.1038/s415...

The strain on scientific publishing: we set out to characterise the remarkable growth of the scientific literature in the last few years, in spite of declining growth in total scientists. What is going on? direct.mit.edu/qss/article/... A 🧵 1/n #AcademicSky #PhDchat #ScientificPublishing #SciPub

I'm hiring, two fully funded PhD positions! Come work in Umeå in Arctic Sweden, a leading place for high-latitude ecosystem ecology and carbon biogeochemistry

One week left to apply!

Women are more likely to drop out of science than men. From my experience, the postdoc system works against those who can't be flexible about working hours or job location, and who need predictable finances. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... (Thank you #NatureBriefing for flagging this article!)

A fascinating 2023/24 study of publishing timelines over 140,000 academics in STEMM showing discipline & country-specific attrition of academic careers from the publication of first paper. The probability of continuing after 19y just 38-43%. Interactive maps at: public.tableau.com/app/profile/... 🧪

‪Geschichtsklitterung: German compound word meaning a knowingly false reinterpretation of history not rooted in facts. Like calling Hitler a "socialist" or "communist" despite the fact that Nazis killed 20,000 German communists in concentration camps and by execution. www.politico.eu/article/elon...

If you are a scientist (including graduate students) or professional science communicator who is at least 18 years old and are using Bluesky for any kind of professional purposes, please consider taking our survey. Link: umiami.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_... Please help share. 🧪🌎 #SciComm

How is this production technology, redux? 1.4 billion / 26 million = 53.8. Not 37.

Good morning! 🪶

I feel like there needs to be an investigation into insect specimen suppliers. How on earth are these shops able to have a supply of megalara garuda specimens, a wasp that has never been recorded alive? The wasp was only discovered in 2012 as well. #wasp #entomology #insect #taxidermy #bugs

Good morning, please have a nice bug*. #invertebrates #BugADay #Bugsky *Ok ok a slug again. This time a opalescent rainforest snail in Cairns, QLD

One of the best, the Snowcap hummingbird from @tapirvalley.bsky.social This species is not common, as they require pristine habitat adjacent to primary forest. Tapir Valley is one of the best places in the world to see these and I've been very lucky to spend many hours with them. #birds

[new paper] You probably suspected that loss of pollinator diversity consistently reduces reproductive success for wild and cultivated plants, but here we quantify it: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It is just amazing to me how many people with powerful jobs who are supposed to be reasonably smart are freely admitting they rely upon a Lying Machine to do basic cognitive tasks.

Really disappointing news 🐺 for what was arguably a conservation success in Europe 😞

This morning my amazing colleague @svenjahorstmann.bsky.social defended her PhD on the impact of traffic, management and landscape on flower-visiting insects and plants in road verges! 🥳 🐝🦋🚗 Congratulations on the impressive work, Svenja! 🌍🧪

Big congratulations to Doctor @svenjahorstmann.bsky.social, who successfully defended her thesis "The impact of traffic, management and landscape on flower-visiting insects and plants in road verges". Well done! 🧪🦋🐝

Amazing casual findings that sometimes happen in science. Now we know that even ants get tangled in microplastics. Probably one of the smallest animals we are aweare of. Thanks @alvaroluna87.bsky.social and @jmvidalcordero.bsky.social for the work

The meanings of the word for a wren, from eight different languages... 8. Little walnut (Bulgarian) 7. Little bird in the ditch (Japanese) 6. Thumbling (Finnish) 5. Fence-skedaddler (Danish) 4. Fence-master (Hebrew) 3. Druid bird (Irish) 2. Mouse-brother (Faroese) 1. Little king of winter (Dutch)

J Ecol, I love you guys. You know this. But please get yourselves a couple of good artists on the team instead of using this 'it all looks the same' AI generated bullshit. It really takes the fun out of everything. I'm sure you would be able to find ecologists that would be happy to supply you!

Publication workload per scientist has increased dramatically. The authors of this paper define this problem as “the strain on scientific publishing.” And they propose ways to improve publishing practices https://dx.doi.org/10.1162/qss_a_00327
