Check out our latest webinar this lunchtime ⬇️⬇️⬇️ The big debut for @teodorgrama.bsky.social And @jackworlidge.bsky.social @hannahkeenan.bsky.social @emmanorris.bsky.social giving insights too Send your questions in!

Right. Streeting has just told the Commons that while much of this can be done without legislation, a bill is needed. And that the whole process of merging DHSC and NHSE is likely to take 2 years. Even if it’s the right long term decision this will be hugely disruptive in the short term

V good point from Cath - DHSC perm sec recruitment is well advanced, & the PM’s announcement today fundamentally changes the job Does that benefit someone who has run a big org before, a large council perhaps? Or a Whitehall insider? Or someone w/NHS experience? Choices for the cab sec, PM & SofS

Further thought from today's announcement and @stuarthoddinott.bsky.social prophetic blog, the abolition of NHSE very much changes the role of Perm Sec DHSC Process is already underway, but I wonder how they are thinking about role, skills and experience needed. @alexgathomas.bsky.social thoughts?

We've been looking back in the archives to see what previous health ministers have said about NHS England - Lansley, who set it up, was a big fan but it's fair to say not everyone who followed him was...

Big issue for the govt on change to NHSE is that it’s a big reform in itself, as @njdavies.bsky.social pointing out

A very big week for @instituteforgov.bsky.social and our Inside Briefing pod. We’re recording in Hull now and our instalment featuring the PM will land in your podcast feeds tonight.

Live now - join below or watch on youtube. You can also send in questions using the slido link www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tX-...

Starting shortly - IfG reacting to PM's speech and the big news about NHS England bsky.app/profile/inst...

Agility and responsiveness in action... @instituteforgov.bsky.social webinar can now look at the NHSE announcement too

There's a decent case for scrapping NHS England but doing so is a major change programme that will take up substantial ministerial and official time. Hard to see how govt can do this while also making good progress on meeting the 18 week target AND the three shifts ahead of the next election

Good time to reread @stuarthoddinott.bsky.social piece analysing the resignation of NHSE chief executive. www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/aman...

Think this is key - what will actually change after today’s speech, other than moving a few bureaucrats around? What will the government do differently? Or not do any longer?

Great to have Sir Jonathan Van-Tam at UCL last night for an evening of lessons, five years on from the start of the pandemic @stsucl.bsky.social @uclnews.bsky.social @susanmichie.bsky.social @philipcball.bsky.social @cathhaddon.bsky.social @profaliceroberts.bsky.social

TODAY: What is Keir Starmer’s new plan for government reform? Join us at 13:00 for our expert analysis of the PM’s plans to overhaul the state. @drmatthewgill.bsky.social @hannahkeenan.bsky.social @jillongovt.bsky.social @cathhaddon.bsky.social www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/event/keir-s...

My usual post-election caveat as some perm secs who stayed on to see through the election now move. Has happened around many change of govt elections.

For the first time, half of all ministers are women and more women now attend cabinet than ever before – To celebrate international women’s day we've taken a deep dive into the @instituteforgov.bsky.social Ministers Reflect archive to share some insights from women who served in government ... 🧵

Looking forward to this panel @ucl.ac.uk next Weds 5-7pm. 5 years since covid, what are the lessons for communicating in a crisis? Jonathan Van-Tam @profaliceroberts.bsky.social @susanmichie.bsky.social Professor Jack Stilgoe Dr Philip Ball and me! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/communicat...

Great blog from Hannah - the PM has talked about the difficult decision to cut aid to fund defence, but actually all the hard choices are still to come

EVENT: Keir Starmer has promised to introduce legislation to parliament that would extend a statutory duty of candour to public authorities and officials. But what would this actually mean? Join us on Monday 24 February when we will discuss www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/event/legisl...

Fascinating to hear Healey say he will only achieve his reforms to MOD and defence if he is in post throughout the whole of the parliament. Ministerial continuity is crucial to success in implementing policy and reform. But rare to hear one declare their intention so clearly.

Looking forward to speaking at this later in the month, on how research can influence policy, alongside @cathhaddon.bsky.social @instituteforgov.bsky.social, @tobyabgreen.bsky.social, Damian Bird, and Jaron Porciello r2rconf.com/r2r-conferen...

What this government achieves (and doesn't) before the next general election will be defined by the spending review that ends on 11 June. Some thoughts here on why the government's reforms could make for better decisions than in past www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/darr...

Excellent to see Darren Jones announce the government will run a "regular programme of thematic reviews" between spending reviews. Done well, these could help drive a more evidence-based and collaborative SR process

Log on to listen to this talk! Chuffed to hear @drhannahwhite.bsky.social introduce the Chief Secretary with a shout out to this Treasury Orthodoxy piece www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/orth...

A fantastic panel of my @instituteforgov.bsky.social colleagues discussing how missions can feed into the upcoming Spending Review - and how missions are really working!

Fascinating panel to be on. Many thanks to Mark and Leslie for joining me.

Spots email from Cabinet Office: 'special advisers' transparency publications' Opens email: April to June 2024 Ah CO you are such a tease

My very first day in the UK National Archives, 20 years ago: a huge bewildering pile of papers written by Permanent Under-Secretaries, Assistant Scretaries, Department Heads &Ambassadors. I called my professor to ask for help. What was the system? Who did what? Him: “What do you mean, system?”

At @journocoders.bsky.social tomorrow I'm excited to say we're exploring the IfG Ministers Database using @duckdb.org 🎉🦆 Places are currently full but there's a short waitlist, so there's a reasonable chance of a place if you join the waitlist: www.meetup.com/journocoders...

Great work from Paddy - Starmer has now seen two ministerial resignations from his government, putting him at a similar place to Brown, Sunak and May at this point in their tenure

Somewhere I have a table or something showing how Whitehall titles evolved over the centuries. My favourite though will always be the Treasury’s ‘Necessary Woman’

A few days left to apply for this brilliant researcher job @instituteforgov.bsky.social in our civil service team A new year and a new job - come and join us www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/about-us/car...

Last week’s festive podcast still available if you’ve not listened. But mum now has. And…. She is now determined to find her copy of Tinker, Tailor to prove I *could* have read it. And we think the aunt doesn’t (yet) listen so won’t hear me blame her for putting me off Lessons in Chemistry.
