New, from @pamherd.bsky.social at Can We Still Govern: the story of one student illustrates the many ways that Trump's vision of America is one that systematically excludes people with disabilities. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

A lot of us are spiraling and wallowing and generally doing pretty cruddy. I'm not sure if the following is all correct but I'm going to give it a try. 1/n

After 28yrs working for the VA, Clareeta Burton, an Army veteran, was promoted last year, meaning she started a new “probationary” period. She was fired by Musk/Trump in their sweeping dismissal of all “probationary” employees. This is a shameful betrayal of those dedicating their lives to service.

My new nut butter says to store in a Cold Dark Place. So, anywhere in America?

When Stanford IT staff and a pro-diversity group shared a list of words they encouraged others not to use, it was national news, despite the fact it never represented campus policy. When the government erases any mention, data or research related to words, will it be treated as a free speech issue?

the “administrative state” in practice is a lot of very hard working, practically anonymous people doing the thankless work of making this country run and a drug-addled dipshit is slandering them in order to steal our money for himself

This event is happening this Wednesday at the #Umich Ann Arbor campus, come and please share!

What do we think? Is the reason I can’t see a hawk in my backyard right now that the jay is tricking me? Can Merlin distinguish actual hawks from blue jay imitation calls?

Come intern with us at @rff.org! We are accepting applications for our annual PAID summer internship program in Washington, DC. And one position will be working with me on tax policy related to critical minerals development. Please share! www.rff.org/careers/summ...

Anyone who happened to know that the White House would announce and then suspend tariffs within 24 hours just made a boatload of money.

We are seeing some impact on reproducibility efforts with the transition to the new US administration. For now, I suggest that you make backups of any data that required you to actively interact with the Federal government, as there may be a delay in response times.... #openscience

People don’t realize how bad things are inside the federal government. MAGA is dehumanizing federal workers using terms like vipers and I personally know people who are scared for their safety. This dehumanization is a staple of autocracy and has led to extreme violence. 🧵

This is a scientific bloodbath, the modern day equivalent of burning down libraries

⏰ Today is your last chance to fill out the AERE member survey. Please help us make AERE and AERE's swag even better!

Pretty much every mainstream economist thinks the federal government should fund R&D, whether via federal scientists themselves or via grants to universities - knowledge spillovers means that giving these scientists stable funding makes us ALL better off

The staggering amounts of money that flowed to the highest level elected officials in Ohio should absolutely be a wake up to Michigan, where we have milquetoasty transparency for campaign finance.

Interesting new piece on utility regulation and rates of return in the US. 🔌💡 Many of the broad insights align with some of my own work (with Karl Dunkle Werner) where we examine the excessive returns that US regulators allow utility companies to pay out to shareholders.

Kudos to the folks at @aereorg.bsky.social for the Summer Conference selection process. Today I'm reviewing the extended abstracts assigned to me. I suspect we're going to get an equitable selection and a high quality set of papers. And I'm learning a lot already from the abstracts!

Lucas Davis digs into proposed Constellation-Calpine merger in today's EI blog. Great teaching case on how combining marginal and infra-marginal capacity can potentially ratchet up market power. But other details, like retail position, also important. 💡🔌 energyathaas.wordpress.com/2025/01/21/c...

Utility disconnections are a huge challenge in the US. I learned a ton about it from Sanya Carley on this weeks @rff.org podcast! www.resources.org/resources-ra...

the amazing thing about minnesotans is that when the temperature is -16F, their response is "let's go down to the lake and admire the view!" (i tuned in for the sea smoke, but am now obsessed with the steady stream of people wandering through)

We're expanding our collection of data archiving scripts just in case, and have improved the infrastructure and documentation to facilitate community contributions. Please let us know what to grab, or open an issue/PR! #EnergySky #OpenData github.com/catalyst-coo...
