Audiobook round-up: February I started my month off with Lessons by Ian McEwan. This tells the life story of Roland, and the lessons he learns along the way.

A sharp, clear memory: sitting on the sofa with big headphones on listening to the Ricky Martin album as I type a story on a red typewriter. I have blu-tacked a little model of the three Fates from Disney’s Hercules to the typewriter in the hope it will fill me with creativity. I’m about 9 or 10.

It’s just 6 weeks to go before I run @parismarathon.bsky.social for Shout. I am absolutely bricking it, but every donation spurs me on. I am so close to my target! www.justgiving.com/page/fran-pa...

An exquisite heartbreak Imagine you're a 7-year-old child and you are abducted by your father. Well, that's what happens to Lilia. Lilia has been on the run her whole life, but when she comes across Eli, things start to change.

Who's at #LBF this year? #LondonBookFair

My neck just made a very alarming crunching sound. I'm not in any pain, but perhaps I need to do some neck exercises...

Always nice to catch up with an #author in person. Here’s Fran and I with Barbara Allen who is holding the proof copy of Lost Animals, Disappearing Worlds @reaktionbooks.bsky.social An important book promoting awareness of endangered #wildlife through intimate, personal portraits of extinct species.

A swashbuckling adventure Fans of The Princess Bride will love Tress of the Emerald Sea! Our February bookclub pick, this swashbuckling adventure tells the story of Tress as she goes to save the love of her life.

Listening to Chase & Status to get through this day.

A deeply philosophical story I'd heard of Roland Barthes before, but I had very little idea of his philosophy and works. A Lover's Discourse, vaguely aligned to Barthes' work of the same name, tells the story of a Chinese woman in London post-Brexit

Long run day 😬 I have to do 21km for my training and to say I’m nervous is an understatement. www.justgiving.com/page/fran-pa...

A heartbreaking and dramatic tale I've had this book on my shelf for ages, and finally decided to pick it up on a whim because I liked the cover.

A fractured but compelling read Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, For She is Wrath is a clever gender-flipping retelling of Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo.

Audiobook round-up: January The first audiobook of the year was Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld. The author of American Wife wrote Eligible a few years ago now, so it can be a little dated, but is basically a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in modern-day Cincinnati.

New kicks! Wonder if they’ll make me go faster 🤔

Shopping for jeans is a nightmare. Where are the skinnies!? You’d have to peel my skinny jeans off my cold dead body before I give them up.

Okay, okay, you’ve convinced me… One like = one thing I love (Until I run out of things!)

A witty romp inksplash.blog/2025/01/21/o...

Ate so much I feel sick. I only have myself to blame. Can someone come and rub my back and tell me it's okay?

Less than 12 weeks to go to Paris marathon, which I am running for Shout (a mental health charity). If you could see it in your hearts to donate a couple of quid, I would be most grateful. www.justgiving.com/page/fran-pa...

A beautiful heartbreak Winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, Han Kang's writing is a love letter to South Korea. Her writing is majestic, poetic, and haunting. Human Acts is no different.

A harrowing and enraging narrative This book, the next offering from author of The Underground Railroad, is just as heartbreaking as his first.

A dragon-filled epic Meet Raeve, an assassin whose inner sanctum is a world of ice and murk. Meet Kaan Vaegor, the heartbroken king, mourning the loss of his one true love. You can kind of see where this is going, right? Well, you're right and wrong. A dragon-filled epic, there is a reason why…

A quick-witted coming-of-age story The Party by Tessa Hadley Vintage 9781787335554 128pp From the mammoth task of Great Circle, to the lovely little palate-cleanser of The Party by Tessa Hadley. This novella tells the story of two sisters, Moira and Evelyn, in post-War Bristol, and one night that…

A gripping tale of passion and mystery Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead Transworld 9781529176643 688pp My last book of 2024, and my first book of 2025, Great Circle was picked by my bookclub as our December / January read. It has a dual narrative; one, the life story of a young female aviator in…
