The people yearn for pedestrian streets

ICYMI: A wonderful piece about how outdated rules contribute to generational unfairness and limited options. Owning things can be dismissed as elitist or consumerist, but it can also grant autonomy and freedom in some cases.

I think that a good rule of thumb for political advocacy is that you should spend more time criticizing politicians than you do criticizing other advocates, both those who are aligned with you and those who aren't.

Oh no. No deal with the man who honours zero deals?

"It’s a housing crisis everywhere in the city — not just a housing crisis downtown." Quote from board member @zakls.bsky.social made the headline! There's been a slow uptake of 4plexes built since legalization about a year ago. We need to open the door further. www.thestar.com/real-estate/...

"Ownership is what this is all about, owning your time, your money, your future. It’s been done before in this city and it will have to be done again if we want to convince millions of young Torontonians to stay and contribute their own ideas and ventures to shaping the Toronto of tomorrow."

Perks isn't voting yes with strong mayor powers. A bigger issue for me is multiple councillors (Carroll, Fletcher) used questions and speeches to state that residents associations were saying no, dismissing those saying yes as just from downtown. And the mayor said nothing to correct that.

This was a while ago but it feels like the moment to share that Councillor Cheng once lectured the United Church to stop using their sites for affordable housing because her faith is very important to her. "Symbolically" voted against 6 storeys; wasn't even her ward. www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2Zr...

Myth: #Toronto allows unrestricted housing development. The truth is that it has the same outdated restrictions as suburbs like #Mississauga. Yesterday's decision on 6-plexes show that Toronto's leaders are not ready to take even the most modest action to address the housing crisis.

More Neighbours Toronto is disappointed in City Council’s failure to legalize sixplexes across the City of Toronto. Mayor Olivia Chow should have shown clear leadership and stood up for this reform with the full spectrum of tools available to her. 1/3

One thing that's tough about requests to applaud this compromise is that the motion already *was* a compromise in that it didn't deliver on the 4 storey promise and was tied to the bedroom cap of another motion based on, at most, 5 suspicious applications that may or may not have been approved.

For all you Canadian parliamentary nerds - debate on the third reading of Bill C-5 has just begun. You can watch the live stream right here The first speech this morning is from the bill's sponsor, Senator Hassan Yussuff. #cdnpoli #SenCa #SenateofCanada

Good morning to everyone who supported sixplexes as-of-right in Toronto 🌅🌅🌅

I’ve argued a lot for local government autonomy, even when the calibre of local politicians has made that a *difficult* position to take. But if higher orders of government offer a lifeline contingent on City Council adopting more housing options and they still don’t, then too damn bad.

Councillors signing deals for federal money: Haha fuck yeah!!! Yes!! Councillors when they need to hold up their end of the deal: Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.

Yonge Street in North York is one of the best things about North York. Where they figured out how to do interesting retail below new condo towers.

The best part of North York (loads of small businesses selling all kinds of Asian cuisine late into the night) is apparently "dystopian". Don't worry though, that's just the opinion of . . . the local city ouncillor!?!?!!?

I'm getting so annoyed that this entire debate is hinging on $10 per resident of federal funding and not you know, the now decades long housing crisis no one seems in resolving for its own sake.

There's a detached home down the road that has been under construction for ages and regularly blocks the sidewalk. And have you seen the number of illegal fences that request exemptions after-the-fact from the City every month? We should stop allowing detached homes as-of-right. It hasn't gone well.

This (ongoing) debate in Toronto is interesting insofar as in Winnipeg's recent debate, there wasn't any ambiguity on the fact that Ottawa might enforce its zoning conditions for HAF $. Apparently left unsaid in Toronto so far: similar conditions are now embedded in almost every other Fed-city fund.

Called out by Waterloo 😭. Deserved.

Huge shoutout to @moreneighboursto.bsky.social for bringing me and so many others into the conversation about housing in our City! More thoughts in the thread below.

Imagine being this wrong this loudly. Mamdani doesn't deserve to be slandered like this. #yimby

I don't know why so many councillors feel the need to call out More Neighbours on the floor of Council for showing up and having opinions that they don't like. I took a vacation day to depute at committee and I wouldn't have bothered if they had been clear that my opinion doesn't matter.

Maybe they want to build a sixplex but the City won't let them even it looks the exact same as the existing building on the outside. Oh, sorry, that thing that people want to do in their own neighbourhood isn't one that we're considering?

This is going to be excruciating to watch (bless matt for doing the play x play) but cars, along with all the other death and destruction, are used as reason to limit housing options often. The city truly is for the car, not people.
