The natural world, animals & the arts both ground and lift me. Long legal career has interested, motivated and sustained me. Horrified by so much of today’s politics. Writing these kind of profiles does not come naturally…#FBPE

This Is What The Agreement States And We Should Honor It!

To justify Kilmar Abrego Garcia being illegally sent to a concentration camp in El Salvador, MAGA lunatics are lying about Jan 6 terrorists not having due process. Jan 6ers seditiously stormed the US Capitol and still had trials, lawyers, appeals and a criminal pardoned them.

Britain, a trading nation, now has a vital choice to make about its priority trading partners: - the EU, where agreements are made, kept, reciprocal, based on international norms, & enforced by a court - the USA, where agreements are made, broken, changed & broken again at a whim, with no recourse

Paying taxes with tears in my eyes knowing what they're paying for - disappearing innocent people to a concentration camp in El Salvador. What have we become?

Don’t overthink this. He’s asking for bribes.

I just got a notice that an academic conference for 2026 was being moved from the US to Canada because of concerns people have with entering the US. The cell phone searches and random detentions at the border are going to have long-term negative effects on the US.

@alastaircampbell2.bsky.social @rory-stewart.bsky.social I did wonder if I had the stomach to listen to a man who defended Tory chaos and who now cashing in on it but thought would give it a try. His first answer about fox hunting saved me a wasted hour. What an odious individual.

OK, let’s see the best signs that you saw today.

This is Utah in case anyone’s wondering how pissed off people are. I have never seen anything like this.

Le Pen being barred from running IS democratic. For democracy to function there have to be rules, standards, checks and balances. Letting those rules be bypassed for partisan reasons would be anti-democratic.

One of two things will happen this week: 1) Labour will roll over to Trump, and cut a panicked and ridiculously one-sided deal to avoid tariffs. 2) Britain will be hit by tariffs Neither is good. What we should have been doing is: 3) Cosying up to the EU, and coordinating retaliatory tariffs

He’s cut budget allocations in pursuit of Twitter likes where the cuts will result in deaths, but those lives are, it seems, as nothing compared to his hurt feelings that people don’t like him enough.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

Robert Fife @RobertFife · 27m Liberal Party says it has counted the number of questions the three leaders have taken from reporters since March 23 election call: Pierre Poilievre: 26 Mark Carney: 100 Jagmeet Singh: 90 Yves Francois Blanchette: 83

“‘It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies,’ Dr. Peter Marks wrote in a resignation letter referring to HHS Secretary RFK Jr.”

Keir Starmer said yesterday: “Labour is the party of work. We shouldn’t shrug our shoulders as millions are unable to work.” Stop creating a false binary. Clinician here: cutting £5–6k from disabled people isn’t help—it’s wilful abandonment and many will die. #WelfareNotWorkfare

There is nothing “responsible” about forcing hundreds of thousands of people into poverty, while putting even more strain on those public servants who will have to pick up the pieces, argues @adambienkov.bsky.social bylinetimes.com/2025/03/26/t...

I’ve got a fever. And the only prescription is…more freakin lawyers resigning from weak-ass law firms

There is no moral equivalence between bullies and the bullied, between tyranny and democracy, or between brutality and decency. No individual can be free in a society devoid of justice. There can be no liberty where brutality reigns.

When is the media going to admit what is right in front of their faces? Trump is losing it. Politico ran an article today that demonstrates it in fine detail but it's never directly addressed: digbysblog.net/2025/03/29/h...

These are the heroes of our time. Be on the right side of history folks. Do right by the rule of law and democracy. Do NOT be a coward who obeys in advance!

Are we great again yet?

Great letters in The Times on the ugly menace of Trump and what should be done about him: See him for what he is, stand up to him, say no to him, never trust him, join forces meaningfully with Europe, ask to join the EU Single Market and rethink that not so ‘special relationship’.

The reason that the US is locking up tourists for weeks in hellish detention centers rather than letting them book tickets back home is because the detention centers are owned by corporations. They are charging the taxpayers fortunes to cage these people, and making bonanzas off their suffering.

Canada is potentially about to elect a Prime Minister with a PhD in economics from Oxford, Mexico elected someone with a degree in physics and a PhD in energy engineering… Meanwhile, America elected a barely sentient orange turnip. Any Questions?!
