I will say that wǔxiá and medieval Irish literature do go in some similar directions. The Wooing of Emer (c. 900 CE) has Cú Chulainn sent to a foreign land (Scotland) to learn martial arts and receive a superpowered spear, and getting into romantic drama with every woman he meets.

Wonderful to watch Howl's Moving Castle on the big silver screen again. First time I watched it on release it was the romance. This time the flames of war is what really struck me. There was a Lao Fuzi exhibit nearby too. The marketing crew from Japan did interviews after viewing.
