An easy way to tell if a story about suicide is written by someone who has dealt with suicidal feelings is in how they portray it emotionally. If not: Grand, operatic despair If yes: "I'm tired..."

A part of character design I'm starting to loathe is when a character acts like a complete cunt, and then the writer drops their backstory on you as if they're trying to make you feel guilty for disliking their cunty behavior. But it never works unless you already liked the character.
