So flippin’ excited to see Shermann “Dilla” Thomas talk @loyolahistdept.bsky.social’s grad student conference. “If it has a name, it has a history,” he says. A motto we all should respect.

@ncph.bsky.social is currently taking pitches for articles on public history and advocacy for its famed History@Work blog. The hope is to learn from past advocacy work to help us move into the future. Please share! The CFP is here: ncph.org/wp-content/u...

FUNDING! The Center for Religion and Cities has extended the deadline for its $5000 summer research fellowship. Applications are due Friday, February 14. Please share widely! www.religionandcities.org/grants

Great reporting here from Christianity Today on what appears is the first reported incident of ICE scooping up migrants at a church--while services were going on! www.christianitytoday.com/2025/01/shou...

Penultimate draft of the map going in my book. Would appreciate any feedback on edits that could be made to make things clearer. Only note is that the caption will explain the numbers on the map. TIA!

This stunning portrait of trailblazing civil rights legal visionary Pauli Murray, now hangs in the Pauli Murray Suite at Howard Law School. The portrait was donated by alumni.

ICE tried raiding a Chicago Public School today & were turned away. I share this because it has me wondering--what are my rights & responsibilities as a faculty member should ICE show up to my classroom? Anyone have any resources they can point me to? www.chicagotribune.com/2025/01/24/i...

Ok. I’ll turn off my “I’m on leave auto-reply.” Sigh.

I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but this article on Ken Burn’s home is super interesting. I’ll also never be ashamed of the fact that his Civil War documentary is important to me. Even with all its many flaws.

A new Supreme Court case about religion has a hidden trap for workers www.vox.com/scotus/39142...

New two-year 🗃️ postdoc at South Carolina on the history of Civil Rights.

Very excited to learn about this and add it to my queue.

The Chicago Manual of Style, btw, is also not clear!!!

Proper noun query for everyone. I am writing about the Western Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church for something. When I shorten that to just "Western Avenue church" for the sake of brevity, does "Church" get capitalized in that instance? I can see an argument for both?????

This whole exchange is a little bit like scientists arguing over weather wetlands are determined by the water or the soil. As humanists, we should be monitoring the debate, not wading into it.

“Making the Carlisle School a national monument, we make clear what great nations do: We don’t erase history; we acknowledge it, we learn from it, we remember, so we never repeat it again.”

Evaluation time! Don't forget to use @bschmidt.bsky.social's amazing tool to help your students see that these mechanisms of surveillance are fundamentally discriminatory and, as evidence of teaching quality, effectively useless! shorturl.at/To24L

Interesting pedagogy article from UCLA on profs using in house AI programs to develop textbooks and resource material so class time can be spent on discussing the reading. No idea if it'll work. But it addresses the complaints faculty have about student reading. newsroom.ucla.edu/stories/comp...

From Ryan Burge. Have been thinking about this & the politics of defining who/what is an evangelical. George Marsden used to say that an evangelical is someone who likes Billy Graham. Maybe it's time to start just identifying evangelicals as someone who likes Donald Trump.

Community service, ✅

You guys remember when movies were 90 minutes and tv shows were 45? I miss that rhythm.

We are so back.

Folks in the #publichistory world will be interested to know that last night @loyolahistdept.bsky.social celebrated the remarkable career of Ted Karamanski, our program’s founding director & early president of @ncph.bsky.social. It was a well deserved recognition. 🗃️ /1

Please share widely and reach out with any questions. I sit on the board and helped write the CFP.

FUNDING! Center for Religion & Cities just announced a Summer Research Grants, which provides $5k to a scholar or practitioner (broadly conceived) who seeks support for a project engaged with the relationships between religion & cities (also broadly conceived). www.religionandcities.org/grants

If anyone is new and looking for a public history starter pack featuring people who work in museums ⬇️

A peculiar feature of the millennial holiday season is having to skip all of the weird Sufjan songs on your Christmas playlist.

I totally understand not being able to edit posts, but it’d be nice to be able to go back and add alt text to an image when we forget. @bsky.app
