Looking to access important public information on earthquakes? Not so fast, you have to wait while fewer employees than ever frantically try to find maps with geographic names that satisfy the whims of the guys taking away your rights.

I truly think people don’t realize how many universities and colleges — especially public ones — may shut down if restrictions on and withholding of federal funding persists for even one presidency We are facing the demolition of American higher education

The extra ironic bit of all of this is that the "elite" universities that conservatives seem to especially hate are the most likely to be able to weather this storm as they have controls over their own tuition and larger endowments (though much of those funds are bound by donor agreements).

😡 F'ing ridiculous. After updating its FAQ yesterday, NSF refused to directly answer a simple question: "Will the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) continue to award fellowships in 2025?" GRFPs are a lifeline that support 2,000+ graduate students/year. www.nsf.gov/executive-or...

"These kinds of shocks are going to lead to a mass exodus … for minorities in particular.” For my latest @science.org story, I spoke with early career researchers who have been affected by the federal upheaval and are concerned about what it means for their future. www.science.org/content/arti...

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.

Movie you've watched more than 6 times, gifs only:

The rise of gen AI, backed at every level by the far-right, suggests the arrival of an _anti-information_ age. AI offers a self-reinforcing bullshit loop that, much like a Russian disinfo operation, serves to muddy the information space and create doubt about the very nature of reality.

Climate change is the biggest crisis humanity faces in the 21st century and just because they are trying to eliminate all mentions of the word “climate“ doesn’t actually solve anything.

Meritocracy was always a code word for white mediocrity, but I think even mediocrity makes them feel insecure.

It's extremely worrying to see universities facing choices that can lead to this. Graduate education leads to new knowledge and future leaders, and even a temporary pause in some PhD programs is a huge loss. Has anyone heard any updates on publicly-funded fellowships like NSF GRFP?

How dare a biologist who studies sex talk about biology and sex in a national paper.

Dear Vancouver: It’s our turn!! If you have time, please fill out a quake report! www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/dyfi-lavr/fo...

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

Proposed and ongoing cuts at FEMA and the National Weather Service could endanger public safety when disaster strikes. A critically important analysis from @drjeffmasters.bsky.social and @bhensonweather.bsky.social yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/cuts...

So this is fun: I actually made a small contribution to this cool seismology paper that came out this month! Seems I'm not the only one who thinks it's cool, too: gizmodo.com/scientists-d...

The breadth and scope of cowardice amongst our scientific leadership is staggering.

“NSF fired about 10 percent of its staff at the end of Tuesday, removing 168 people who included most of the agency’s probationary employees and all of its experts, a class of contract workers who are specialists in niche scientific fields.” — www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

"The world's glaciers are melting faster than ever recorded under the impact of climate change, according to the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date." Probably fine.

Scientists... possibly the thing from this article I am most proud of is just saying this. Love to just see it in print. “The director of the NSF is complying with illegal executive orders and not complying with stays that judges have put on those illegal actions,” Topaz said.

From NSF EAR program director Raleigh Martin on LinkedIn #climatesky #greensky

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

Important 🧵: Stanford political scientist uses data to show DOGE is attacking “liberal” agencies, not focusing on waste & inefficiency: “The hardest hit agencies are those that regulate industry, protect public health, and expand access to education.”

1) The letter is not legal 2) Do not comply in advance!

168 colleagues lost yesterday, 6 in Earth Sciences alone. Today we grieved. And strategized. www.npr.org/2025/02/18/n...

DEI is the most popular thing in this list lmao

Just went to an "AI in Teaching" panel and one of the panelists told us very proudly about a math prof who made an AI assistant for calc students that was right 80% of the time. Tech-brained beyond repair to not be wildly embarrassed at the prospect of endorsing that as a "resource" to students.

Trump rode to political prominence on birtherism and spent the last month of his campaign claiming that Haitians were eating cats. The rise of authoritarianism in America *must* be understood as a misinformation crisis.

This is a really nice explainer of how grant funding works and why recent administrative actions are VERY bad for science and society. If you're looking for resources that can help you explain the situation and spread the word among the non-scientists in your communities, this is very useful!

It's meteorite day for one of my classes! There's nothing quite like holding a space rock with bits older than the solar system. 🧪

Press from UChicago about some cool new cryoseismology by grad student Freya Chen! It's been cool to keep up and help out with Freya's work the past couple of years! 🧪⛏️ Open access paper here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/... news.uchicago.edu/story/scient...

Statements like this give me hope. I understand that people are afraid. There is so much to lose. But there is so much more to lose if we don't defend DEI. If they want to dismantle science, they will find a way to do it. Let's not let them do it at the expense of the next generation of trainees.

More and more scientists are joining the ranks of fired federal workers—and fighting back through protests, appeals, and legal challenges.

More terrible news for #science 🧪 Many people fired were part of the #NSF Office of Polar Programs that funds #Antarctic and #Arctic science. New proposals won't be reviewed, new grants won't be issued, & current grants won't have admin support and may be withdrawn 😭 www.wired.com/story/nation...

Searing letter. "At the top of NSF we need people who radiate epistemic authority; beacons of faith in the power of research and education to benefit the Nation ... What we have instead is blades of grass, bending in the wind, however it blows. People without a shred of empathy." Alt text added.

A lot of our academic colleagues go to work at NSF for a couple of years as a rotator. In the programs that have funded me, rotators have been essential to keeping those divisions going. It's hard to see how these firings won't severely diminish NSF.

Help, it's week 7 of 9 in our quarter, but my Borg jokes fall flat because all of my students are younger than Voyager. They haven't even seen it in re-runs.

VERY valuable thread for geoscientists, and all scientists who are looking for the right questions to ask their professional societies. Even after they walked back some of the advance compliance, it was still extremely troubling to see AGU damage the trust they'd built with their diverse membership.

I want to see the American Geophysical Union (AGU) continue its awesome work on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This thread is a call to AGU and AGU members. 1/

An inspiring article on courageous community college leaders who are *publicly* organizing and standing up against DEI attacks.. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...
