NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled. I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...

Nice story on fabulous new work from @dingliu.bsky.social in my lab, just out today!...

Despite court order, NIH grants remain frozen. Newly awarded grants, grants with fundable scores, & funds for a new budget cycle of a current project are all *FROZEN*🥶 and not being released. US research is being choked to death & is on life support right now www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

AOC: The order has come down to this committee. Find $880 billion to pay for a tax cuts on yachts, jets, billionaires, and mega corporations while working class people pay higher tax rates than Facebook does. Undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than many large corporations

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.

This was supposed to be a post about my lab's first funding of the year, a diversity supplement to fund our amazing research technician. The award never arrived. Now it's a post about the value of diversity and trying to persevere in these dark times. devinenilab.org/news/diversi...

Trump officials are trying to sneak around federal judges’ orders. They could be held in civil contempt of court, which can include jail time and can’t be undone with a presidential pardon, according to @sbagen.bsky.social . My latest for @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

An #NIH-funded research team has developed an mRNA vaccine to treat pancreatic cancer. Results from the clinical trial were published this week in Nature. #pancreas #cancer #mRNA #vaccine #medsky #science #medicine #bluesky

This New Drug Could Help End the HIV Epidemic—but US Funding Cuts Are Killing Its Rollout www.wired.com/story/lenaca...

In case you were wondering how Fox News is covering the proposed cuts at the NIH:

Trump's illegal NIH cuts mean cancer researchers would be laid off, sick kids going without treatment, and more. These cuts would be DEVASTATING for lifesaving research. Some Republicans have said they agree—but they just blocked my amendment to reverse Trump's NIH cuts anyway.

He nails it.

Mr. Hegseth has previously said that General Brown should be fired because of his “woke” focus on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the military. Replaces a Black four-star fighter pilot with a white man who does not meet the statutory qualifications supposedly over DEI.

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

This is what NIH-funded research leads to. Cures for disease.

Also just now, NIH intranet was updated re its communications pause. NIH scientists can now resume travel to and participation in conferences. The pause on updating the Federal Register remains in place -- which means grant-making is effectively frozen, in violation of court orders.

Watching scientific experts being fired indiscriminately by trust fund teenagers under the banner of “merit hires only” gives me similar feelings to watching books banned and data deleted by “free speech absolutists”

I have heard from several sources (although details are vague) it appears that NIH is back to blocking NoA release while awaiting development of plans for dealing language, perhaps pertaining to DEI issues, in these awards. If this is occurring, it seems like a clear violation of the TRO. 1/n

Here is the comparison between 2017, 2021, 2025. I have plotted these in terms of 2017 dollars corrected for inflation. I was going to plot these in terms of the fraction of the NIH appropriation but, of course, there is not enacted 2025 appropriations, because, you know, Congress...

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

Interventions to Prevent and Treat Addictions Study Section seems like a bad one to suspend to me.

Glad to see this post getting some traction, because the Federal Register is the WHOLE ballgame, folks. To drive this point home, a recent EO declares that all posts to FR now must be approved by the White House. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

It’s becoming apparent to me through multiple conversations with people over the last 3 days that NIH funding mechanisms that have not already gone through review and council will be delayed by AT LEAST 6 months.

The waste is coming from the White House. 👇

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

41/47 (87%) of NIH study sections are cancelled this week Frustrating to see all this good research stalled (& not funded) You can search for study sections that ‘did not meet as scheduled’ here with ones with * ⤵️ www.csr.nih.gov/RevPanelsAnd...

It’s @katherinejwu.com with the receipts. The NIH memo undercutting the NIH came directly from Trump officials. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

My family knows the pain of Alzheimer’s. It’s devastating. And now we learn Trump’s NIH cuts led to the firing of top researchers working on it --Infuriating. This isn’t “cutting waste”—it’s cutting and gutting life-saving research.

Thanks for the info from reviewers... All 8 CSR study section meeting scheduled today have been cancelled (due to the Federal Register announcement issue). Some reviewers are finding out that their meetings are cancelled when they are notified by the travel agency that their tickets are cancelled.

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning. Without those grants, my lab must close within a year. And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues 🤬 #MicroSky 🦠🧫🧪🧬🔬

We are hearing that Andy Singleton, director of a new and promising Alzheimer's research center at NIH, just announced his resignation. This will disrupt innovative new Alzheimer's work to go beyond the "amyloid hypothesis." Bad news for anyone who's been touched by this disease. 🧪

Best case scenario as far as I can tell RIGHT NOW is that we'll likely lose two cycles at NIH. I guess it's possible that some apps scored now before the FRN shit show could get funded, assuming the next round of council meetings take place. Regardless, it's an unprecedented disaster.

HHS blocked posting indefinitely. Not enough press is being given to this back door approach to blocking NIH grants. If and when it is lifted will still be 35 days before study sections can be held

The "large scale social deception" contract Musk is conspiracizing about was: * first awarded under Trump * paid to Reuters' data division, not the newsroom * for researching *defenses* against deception * not revealed by "DOGE investigations" and was a public record, visible online for many years

I'm #standingupforscience because when I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in 2018, I was terrified. The survival statistics for my type of melanoma was around 20%. But these statistics did not include the lives saved from the recent NCI and CRI funded studies of immunotherapy drugs. 1/6

History buffs will know that every authoritarian leader eventually converges on some version of: "I *am* the state. I can not break the law, I am the law, the law is instantiated in me." Our march to authoritarianism so far has been excruciatingly by-the-book. Hitting every beat. No surprises.
