Happy Friday the 13th! Ever wonder how they pulled off that gnarly Kevin Bacon kill in 1980's Friday the 13th? When the blood pump broke, FX guru Tom Savini didn't miss a beat — he blew the fake blood through the tube himself from under the bed. Talk about commitment to the craft.

Ever see Take On Me and think, “how’d they pull that off?” The answer: STORYBOARDS. Even for a music video as surreal as that one — every moment was planned.

We rabbit-holed first person POV so you don't have to. Where did it come from. Why does it work?  In 1947, director Robert Montgomery made a bold choice: to tell Lady in the Lake entirely through the eyes of the MC. Instead of watching the detective, you were the detective. It changed the rules

This you? Write. Backspace. Write again. Backspace again. Same sentence. Still stuck. Here’s how to break the cycle: (1/2)

Podcasters: are you scripting your episodes? Not saying you need a full screenplay—though we wouldn’t stop you 👀 But even a loose outline can make recording smoother, editing faster, and storytelling sharper.

Yes, it’s much safer to like a script from an established screenwriter. But it’s much more exciting to love a script from a writer no one’s heard of. Trust me. This industry wants great screenwriting. Don’t convince yourself that it doesn’t.

Your protagonist isn’t the only one holding your story together. Let’s talk about the B-story. (It’s not just a subplot—it’s where a LOT of the magic happens.) 🧵

🎶 Hears one emotionally devastating lyric 🧠 Brain: What if this was the inciting incident of a deeply personal, slow-burn drama? 1/3

Wondering if you’re overusing parentheticals? If your dialogue reads more like stage directions than a scene… you might be. Actors don’t need (smiling) or (angrily) every other line. Let your scene show it. For more tips:

Voiceover gets a bad rap, but when it’s good — it’s good. Use it to bridge time, get in your character’s head, or totally flip the tone of a scene. (and yes, you should format it right—Celtx can help with that)

A well-scripted fight scene is only the beginning. It’s the rhythm and intention on the page that makes room for the real magic on set—choreography, coordination, and camera work.

Montage Monday, anyone? We love a good movie montage — when it actually serves a purpose for plot. Here are some of our favorites:

Common mistake: overwriting or undercutting your scenes. A scene that overstays its welcome? You feel it. One that ends too fast? You lose the impact. Your job: make sure each scene does something — builds tension, reveals character, drives story. If it’s not doing that, time to cut or tighten. 🎬✂️

Efficient productions start with great communication — and a call sheet is at the center of it all. 🎬  What a good call sheet gets you: ✅ Key shoot details in one place ✅ Fewer “wait, where are we supposed to be?” texts ✅ A smoother, more productive day on set

Strong stories build strong careers. In honor of Get Caught Reading Month, here are 9 books every screenwriter should explore. Why? They'll change the way you write - for the better:

Star Wars Fun facts: Luke’s last name was only changed from Starkiller to Skywalker just weeks before shooting began. The Force started as two opposing energies — Ashla and Bogan — and the Darth Vader father twist? That wasn’t added until the Empire Strikes Back draft. Stories change. Let yours.

The unsung hero of every set? The production manager. 💼 No budgets? No locations? No plan? No movie. Learn more about the role, its responsibilities, and how to start a career as a Film Production Manager:

When the storm rages, the wind whispers, and the cold coffee wreaks of betrayal - that’s personification at work. It’s one of the simplest tricks to breathe life into your writing — and the best part? Readers don’t even notice you’re doing it.
