Democrats are fundamentally misunderstanding the moment: We're not asking them to be *legislators* right now. We need them to be *politicians.* There's nothing to be done about the legislative situation. They're right about that. But there's PLENTY to be done as politicians.

Three things that make the U.S. the envy of the world: 1) Professionalized military with strong norm of civilian control 2) Higher education and cutting-edge scientific research 3) Ability to welcome immigrants and attract the “best and the brightest” All three are under threat.

Pay attention to this. Replacing JAGs with loyalists enables whatever orders Trump and Hegseth issue to be interpreted as lawful.

The CDC has been ordered to stop encouraging Americans to get a seasonal flu shot.

Genuinely incredible piece of reporting here that makes the story completely unimpeachable. They sat in the back of an immigration courtroom and watched the guy pull out his personal phone and post to his racist account DURING the hearing!

What happened last time we had a mad king? America doesn't do kings.

Criminals are running amok inside our government and nothing will be done about it because—oh, that’s right!—America voted for a convicted criminal to be in charge of all federal law enforcement See how that works

Tonight, for a bedtime read, I picked up a recently acquired copy of William Gibson's @greatdismal.bsky.social essential 1984 cyberpunk novel "Neuromancer," as I do approximately once a decade. This time, I took a beat to read the 2004 introduction and had two separate "oh fuck!" moments...

He’s not making up: news.bloomberglaw.com/banking-law/... Is this really what y’all voted for? 🫤 💰

The DOGE team does NOT have the time, skills, or resources to do any kind of actual “audit” of federal data or to “modernize” the information systems to which they have gained access—which are the lies being asserted to give them cover. So what are they really doing in these systems?

🚨 Oklahoma Sen. Bullard just said the quiet part out loud. This isn't about "history"—it's about pushing religion in public schools and discriminating against those who don’t share his beliefs. Public schools must remain secular! ✊

We as a nation have a decision to make: Either (a) we value and respect laws and demand everyone is subject to those laws, or (b) totalitarianism. Because if we're OK with laws only applying to the poorest 99.5% of us., we will eventually wake up to find we have (b).

For everyone thinking robots taking away service jobs is a new AI thing, this is from 2015.

I've seen a few folks say with impressive confidence that Trump, or anyone, can't be BOTH incompetent AND dangerous...he can only be one or the other. Really? So why then do we check surgeons' credentials before we let them operate on us?

I will bet you a zillion dollars that Musk is creating copies of all this federal data to create a ginormous AI training library. Do YOU want your tax information to train an AI model? I don't. abcnews.go.com/Politics/elo...

This guy ran 13.1 miles in the time it takes me to run 10 kilometers!

There is no reason that Musk and his DOGE shits should have access to everyone's IRS data. It has nothing to do with rooting out "fraud" or "abuse" at the agency. And if they're looking for individuals evading taxes, well, that's what the fucking IRS is for if you don't fire everyone.

20 minutes apart. On top of being a fascist this is door knob IQ shit.

We've entered a period of US history where some of us will have to explain why, for example, censoring things is not a legitimate approach to combatting censorship, and that limiting speech isn't a reasonable way to promote free speech. And the fact that needs to be explained to ppl terrifies me.

Area free speech absolutist says journalists he doesnt like should face a “long prison sentence”

And the first thing Trump did in his 2nd term was issue a list of words that federal agencies may not use and federal grants may not include. That is pure censorship.

Prepare yourself as best you can. These white supremacists consider themselves above the law, intend to end American democracy by any means necessary, and are dangerous beyond belief. It may not happen tonight, or next month, or this year—but the sad reality is that it also could happen at any time.

People keep begging Republicans to rein in Trump, which is an absurd thing to think is possible. Congressional GOP are at best nervously watching from the sidelines hoping to avoid the eye of Sauron. At worst, they believe in and support the idea that everything's justified if it results in victory.

How long before they argue that admitting Black students at all is "discrimination" against white people?
