Sad but true.

#ProudBlue This is what is happening in LA right now. We don’t need help. We don’t want the Marines or National Guard. Our city & state are fine!!! GET OUT! @jesscraven101.bsky.social video credit

this.

After I watched those people storm the capitol on January 6, I vowed to never again be shocked on behalf of this country. It’s a struggle to hold that line as I watch L.A.

RFK Jr.‘s extreme anti-vax views — and his related conflicts of interest — were a huge problem during his confirmation process. So he promised not to change the vaccine advisory panel. Today, he fired every single expert on that panel. It's a public health disaster.

Sly Stone, one of the most influential and groundbreaking musicians of the late-Sixties and early-Seventies who smashed the boundaries of rock, pop, funk and soul, has died at age 82 rollingstone.com/music/music-...

Heartbreaking to lose Sly Stone today. Here's an anthem for all the brave people resisting ICE in LA and everywhere else www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q49v...

RIP to Sly Stone. Calling someone a genius has mostly lost meaning, except when you apply it to Sly. I'm glad Questlove gave him a revealing and rewarding documentary with SLY LIVES (AKA THE BURDEN OF BLACK GENIUS). I wrote about it for @ebertvoices.bsky.social.

Sly Stone, pioneering leader of funk band Sly and the Family Stone, has died at 82

Today’s listen. 💥👊🏾

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

Now this was a 'rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States'

It's hard to overstate how destructive the reflexive "this is a distraction!" stuff that politicians and commentators and people are always peddling. Everything is happening all at once. That's how authoritarianism works. If you can't navigate and synthesize this, you're not meeting the moment.

Keep your eyes on all the balls.

Senator Ted Cruz posted a dramatic video of LAPD cars on fire with the caption “this… is… not… peaceful.” What he didn’t mention? The footage was from 2020, not 2025. His post on X falsely implied it was current, part of a broader effort to spread lies and manufacture a crisis.

Warning: ICE is planning 30 days of immigration raids across Los Angeles County. If you or someone you know may be impacted, now is the time to set up a support system, identify a safe place, and stay alert.

lmao The Sun has a livestream of the “LA riots” on YouTube and when you click on it it’s a bunch of troops standing around doing nothing you can literally hear birds singing in the background what a time to be alive

Undocumented immigrants pay almost $100 billion in taxes each year. The top 1% evade $163 billion in taxes each year. Stop pretending that immigrants are the ones taking advantage of taxpayers.

the Latino wave for Trump was in part because of aspirational whiteness. and whiteness is always in opposition to and positioned to be superior to Blackness.

Bill Russell declined his Hall of Fame ceremony in 1975, believing he shouldn’t be the first Black player inducted. He finally accepted his ring in 2019—after Chuck Cooper, the first Black player drafted into the NBA, was honored. ☘️

The Los Angeles Police Department has stated that demonstrations in the city have remained peaceful. Let that sink in.

I’m not sure how to express how intensely personal these raids feel as an Angeleno. Whatever stereotypes you have in your head about La-La-Land, immigrants are the lifeblood of this city. It’s an assault on what we love about this place.

Whatever happens in Los Angeles tonight is the playbook they’re going to deploy on blue districts across the country. And we warned people for months leading up to the election about exactly this.

Eventually, when all is said and done, we will realize that the United States owes Kamala Harris a presidency.

Correct. So are breast enhancements or reductions. Reductions are more common for men than you would think.

"Entire demographics are being scrubbed from records of both America’s past and present — including people of color, transgender people, women, immigrants and people with disabilities. They are now among America’s 'missing persons.'" www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/int...

Why people stay checked out: Mainstream media should report on the facts of legislation (BBB) and give details. They focus on politics instead of substance. People DO care. You don't give them enough to care about. FOR EXAMPLE: Trump has suggested that the Senate should pass the bill by July 4th.

Keep your eye on the ball.

Can’t believe they’re so bored that they got to the “rename the boats” stage of white nationalist governance.

Jonathan Joss was MURDERED. Words matter here. He was MURDERED. it was a HATE CRIME because he is a gay Indigenous man. Say those words. Do not dance around it. He wasn't "killed in a shooting." He was murdered in a hate crime.

Lowe’s Dyson Nivea Tiffany Capital One UPS Disney Door Dash Live Nation Anheuser-Busch Diageo Pepsi Nissan PWC Citi Mastercard …all pulled their support for Pride. If brands aren’t supporting your equality, you don’t need to support their profitability. popular.info/p/pride-and-...

Lately, I've been reminding myself that 75 million voters chose Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. We didn't defeat Trumpism at the ballot box. But remembering that 75 million US adults rejected hatred and fear helps me stay encouraged during these difficult days, weeks, and months.

I think a lot about why we are defensive about non-Black people recycling “X lives matter” for their own purposes and I think it boils down to the fact that this necessarily uses Black pain as a rhetorical frame for someone else’s story and it’s rare that this is appropriate or done with care.

I ran across this video yesterday. www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3U1... Whatever may have happened to Joe Biden since this time, he was clear and offered hope. Some people in power have never shown this kind of grace or challenged people to be their best selves. Character, compassion, science...

Guys, it's the oligarchs. If you want to blame someone for 2024, blame the oligarchs. Anyone telling you to blame someone else is part of the oligarchy. Dark money has been to blame since citizens united.

When male lawmakers pass these bathroom laws, they’re thinking of what they would do if they had access to the women’s bathroom, not what trans women do in the women’s bathroom…

NEW: Dem Senators Kelly and Ossoff just introduced legislation to ban ALL of Congress from trading stocks. I support this 100%. It should be the law already.

Start every day with this reality: EVERY HOUSE SEAT and 33 Senate seats are up for election in 2026. THAT must be the focus. Let’s get disciplined. #LeaveNoPowerOnTheTable ballotpedia.org/United_State...

Today marks five years since George Floyd was killed by police. Our June 22, 2020 cover “Say Their Names,” by Kadir Nelson, illustrated how Floyd’s murder embodies the history of violence inflicted upon Black people in America. nyer.cm/UmfefJw

Two different autopsies have confirmed that it was the knee on the neck for 9 minutes that killed George Floyd. He was murdered; it is on video, and the facts are not disputed. SAY HIS NAME GEORGE FLOYD!

Not only was the promise not kept, it’s like it never happened. We get it, there aren’t enough votes to pass real reform. Most of us are pragmatic—but to just drop it completely? To stop even talking about it, like it’s been erased? That’s the part that hits the hardest for me.

Well payed, Harvard, well played. Harvard offers FREE American Government course.

Your regular reminder that the entire global economy is subject to the whipsaw whims of a person who doesn’t understand how the global economy works

Jake Tapper should cancel his book release & publicity tour.

The Trump Admin. just made machine guns legal again by permitting the sale of devices that turn AR-15s into fully automatic weapons. Forced-reset triggers increase a weapon’s rate of fire to mimic fully automatic guns—allowing a shooter to fire an entire magazine’s worth of ammunition in seconds.

I wrote about the group of undercover landlords and investors trying to take over our Minneapolis elections, and why people should care. I tried to make it accessible to folks who aren't already familiar with Minneapolis politics, so please share! mplsmusings.com/2025/05/14/t...

This is the moment I was invited into Delaney Hall. Nobody was kicking or shoving like the coverage suggests. We were invited in.
