Ignoring trolls only works when the troll is small, when there is a platform size imbalance, as in, the troll stands to gain visibility from engagement. What happens when the troll already has a platform? That's when the cancer has entered a higher stage where ignoring it just lets it spread.

I remember reading those books as an awkward high schooler. I only read through the 9th book (I think).
In retrospect I feel like there was some odd and old-fashioned gender stuff going on that would be interesting to interrogate, but other than that I remember it fondly. The magic was top-notch.

I think it's a pretty well-established pattern by now that new art forms tend to mimic the old forms for a while, until they find themselves. Much like how kids mimic their parents until they fuck up their lives forever.
