These are dark days. But for Starmer, the collapse of the old order is a moment of political promise. He can use it to remake his premiership and the continent: new political space has unfolded before him in every direction. Will he seize it? New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Rape Crisis England & Wales, Victim Support, Welsh Women’s Aid, Imkaan and Women’s Aid Federation England have jointly written to the Prime Minister - the survival of victim and survivor services is essential:

The #Brussels Court of Appeal found the Belgian government guilty of crimes against humanity in #Congo during Belgian colonial rule & ordered it to pay compensation as a form of reparation. It's a landmark win for the reparations movement, says @almazteffera.bsky.social www.hrw.org/news/2024/12...

My day just got better!

The support everyone's shown for this project so far has been properly inspiring. We now think we can reach £10k for @savechildrenuk.bsky.social - we're gonna pull out all the stops at our end. 👉PRE-ORDER: orcd.co/universalchild 👉DONATE: www.justgiving.com/page/marshfa... 🎄One week to release day🙏

We are delighted to announce that we have been chosen as one of three charities to benefit from this year's @thetimes.com Christmas Appeal. Every donation will help us to continue to provide free, life-saving therapy to men in suicidal crisis. www.thetimes.com/article/c6a8...

Incredibly grim. And there are boroughs in London where more than 10% of children are homeless. We desperately need more housing in the capital, of all kinds.

Great analysis here of the latest asylum figures by @danielsohege.bsky.social (thank you!) If only these figures could be accurately portrayed in the media rather than the often v selective/ misleading reporting.

Great news for employees’ access to justice.

“We want the right to have a say, we want to have a self-determination.” Jenny Simon from Chagossian Voices discusses reports that the UK’s plans for the Chagos Islands could be in doubt due to opposition from the Trump administration and the new Mauritian government #Newsnight

👓 WHAT WE'RE READING – 5 key stories from the anti-corruption world 1️⃣ @tbij.bsky.social: Great roundup from the TBIJ team of last week's House of Commons debate on SLAPPs, featuring a clip of @joepowell.bsky.social's powerful speech.

Really interesting article. I have some experience and it amazes me that this isn’t much higher profile. A 5 year wait for SEND assessments? Terrible for those pupils and their educational journey plus causes untold stress for their families - especially mothers. 👇

💪❓Weak enforcement has long been the Achilles’ heel of the UK’s fight against economic crime. The early signs suggest that sanctions enforcement is no exception, with the UK’s flatline figures underlining the need for closer scrutiny. A 🧵 1/12. www.spotlightcorruption.org/report/all-b...

The Lady Chief Justice is right. The previous government devastated criminal justice, running up record delays and backlogs. The new government’s ongoing refusal to fund the courts only increases the problem, and will lead to enormous financial and social long-term costs.

I have really appreciated the exceptional contributions to the assisted dying debate here on Bluesky. Including that from @iandunt.bsky.social and @lewisgoodall.com @thenewsagents.com Very much hoping for more grown up debate this week before MPs vote on the bill.

Thanks and hello to everyone who has followed me. Starter packs - genius! I have been sitting on the sidelines in the other place for years, never posting. This feels a much more comfortable place to be. Looking forward to contributing!
