People can be hard on themselves when it comes to reading. - I don't read as much as I should. - I'm a slow reader. - I used to enjoy books as a kid. There's no wrong way to read. There's no minimum number of books to get through. There's no time limit. You can enjoy reading as an adult.

I have a PhD in physics. I am a professor. I write of science fiction. And yet the moment I interact with the dog, I turn into the Swedish Chef.

Shout out to all of those who made it to the #NaNoWinner2024 circle! Congratulations! And to those who didn't, but made some progress--great job! Enjoy some time off as you ice those carpals. #writingcommunity #amwriting

One of my favourite things I look forward to on Christmas Day is after the chaos is over, I often have a new book. The kids build Lego. My wife and I sit back on the couch, often with some treats, and just read for a couple of hours... uninterrupted.

#sci-fi #writing tip for the day... It can be okay to get the science wrong. But there's a difference between an intentional break from fact for the purpose of telling a compelling story and simply not doing your homework.

This morning I hit 50,315 words, making me a #NaNoWinner2024 While this novel may never see the light of day, it was still worth writing. A theme of the relationship between dignity and authority emerged, and it's something I'd like to explore further. Now back to editing Lost Command...

Scientists recently ran an experiment to see if windmills would produce more electricity when music was played. Bach and Mozart had no effect. However Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest doubled their output. It turned out the windmills were in fact huge metal fans.

As I get older I find more and more I'm just kindly objecting to The Machine. Then The Machine insists. And I begrudgingly do what it asks. Because I need the money.

The first draft my current WIP, Lost Command, has just passed 50k words (out of a target 80k). I just realized though that somehow over the last four chapters I've somehow lost a couple of minor characters. Every once in a while as an author it pays to line your characters up and do a head count.

Thought for the morning... ... in the end the Great and Powerful Oz was just a man behind a curtain.

It's currently -37 C (about -35 F) here. Last night with the windchill it went down to a "feels like" of -47 C. You have to be careful when it gets this cold... roads all become superconducting and the cars start to levitate.

Hey writers - do you ever just put in temporary names for side characters while you write, to avoid interrupting the flow? I was looking back over an old Nanowrimo chapter I wrote. One of my temporary names... "Red Shirtington."

Writing thought for the day: Sometimes you have to give yourself permission to write crap.

One of my favourite quotes: "Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less." - Marie Curie

Check out what my kids made me for Christmas... a Fractured Command Lego set with... - Rhino DX-32 dropship, - AEFS Steadfast orbiting a black hole, and - a diorama of Cassi escaping the clutches of a deadly alien life form and rescuing Emica! (the book: www.amazon.com/dp/B0BV3CFS17)

Shout out to all the dads out there currently wrapping the gifts they bought this morning. Or a reminder to go out and do it.
