This year, and probably the next few at least, will provide an illustration of “what if we just stop a lot of the stuff we’ve been doing for the public good?” We could call it the Great FAFO.

The department of the treasury should probably be moved explicitly under the legislative branch and out of the executive branch.

This week, @wired.com has gotten a lot of love on this here app. (Thank you!!) But I don’t think I can overstate what a force @bsky.app has become in influencing the entire media ecosystem. So refreshing to have a platform that isn’t actively hostile to hard news.

happy first birthday to Bluesky, and what a year it's been! with every day, the need for an open network that puts people first becomes increasingly clear. we're glad to be building this with you. after all, the heart of a social network is the people.

this is how it feels to reach 30 MILLION users!!!

Welcome immigrants from X interested in science to the friendlier skies of @bsky.app, as documented by a new @nature.com survey (but you already knew that 😉) "Bluesky is much better for science. There is much less toxicity, misinformation, and distractions." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I was skeptical at first, but Bluesky really is a fantastic platform for scientists who want to engage in broader public conversations. Thank you @bsky.app and @jay.bsky.team for this amazing resource!

A great thing about Wikipedia is that you can see the full edit history of every article. So if you’re interested in investigating bias on there, you can see exactly which edits introduced every change, at what time. Internet archive and other sites also have good independent captures of Wikipedia.

Bluesky has been flooded with automated reply bots - they'll offer a sort of confrontational opinion as a reply. They're pretty convincing and we all need to train ourselves to not reflexively reply to all responses until we check Dead giveaway is new acct, few followers + original posts

Tangle. This segment from “This American” life might be the best endorsement for a political news outlet I’ve ever heard. www.thisamericanlife.org/845/transcript

We had to get in on the video action too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video! Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize.

What's the point of being rich if you can't afford to do the right thing.

Mike is a great follow

LA fires are a good reminder that the only difference between me and any refugee is luck.

Does our country (or any country) really need a single person who is "head of state"? Suppose the U.S. Constitution were amended to eliminate the roles of POTUS & VP with the powers of the Executive branch distributed among the cabinet.

This morning we’re announcing Surf, a new kind of browser for a new kind of web — the open social web. Built on AT Proto, ActivityPub and RSS, you can easily create and surf custom feeds that organize people, videos, articles and podcasts around the things you care about. More at surf.social

The UK parliament has joined Bluesky, with proper verified domains and everything: • @houseofcommons.parliament.uk • @houseoflords.parliament.uk • @ukparliament.parliament.uk • @commonsspeaker.parliament.uk

After 54 years of tyranny, the Assad regime has finally come to an end. Bashar al-Assad has fled his homeland like the coward he is. He joins his despicable family in exile. But the great Syrian people are not out of the woods yet.

Today I wrote about an FTC Commissioner's batshit crazy statements arguing that the FTC can punish any social media company that doesn't follow Elon's lead in how it moderates. Also it can punish advertisers for not advertising on X. www.techdirt.com/2024/12/06/g...

Here @ilpost.it, an Italian national newspaper, confirms the pattern of Bluesky bringing more traffic than Threads. It's not an Anglosphere phenomenon! "[...] in just two weeks the percentage of traffic coming from the platform to the newspaper’s site has surpassed that coming from Threads [...]"
