Global #parkrun attendance is down from the usual post-New Year spike, but yesterday still saw the third highest number of finishers ever.

#parkrun Japan saw their 200 thousandth finisher on Saturday morning, meaning over a billion metres have now been run, jogged or walked in the country since 2019.

It's now two years since #parkrun announced their five year plan to double both the number of events (from ~2,200 to 4,400) and number of finishers (from ~250k to 500k) each weekend. www.parkrun.com/blog/news/20... Growth in events seems to be behind the curve for now, but attendances well on track.

@parkrunnewzealand.bsky.social set another national attendance record this morning for the second Saturday running and the eighth time in six months, with 12,741 people crossing the finish line at 56 events.

@parkrunauofficial.bsky.social and @parkrunnewzealand.bsky.social both broke their attendance records again this morning - Australia had 87,871 finishers (with a couple of results pending) and New Zealand 12,005.

parkrun South Africa had 217 events taking place today, equalling the record last seen in November 2019. More events were lost there following COVID than anywhere else, but the number has steadily regrown since, with the 300th inaugural happening this morning.

The global #parkrun attendance record that had stood for five years and a week was finally broken today.. 1/2

parkrun Singapore set a new national attendance record of 520 this morning, helped by the return of Bedok Reservoir parkrun after an absence of almost 5 years. 44 events in total have returned after a break of longer than 2 years, with 7 of them closing again later.

@parkrunnewzealand.bsky.social set a huge new attendance record of 11,662 on Saturday morning - over double the number the existing record stood at just 13 months ago.

No #parkrun stats today, sorry, I'm on holiday.

Last week and this week respectively had the 2nd and 3rd most 5k #parkrun finishers ever, meaning that there were more than one million finishers in a single fortnight for the very first time.

This equates to about 1 in 345 or 0.3% of Australians running, jogging or walking at parkrun this morning (using 2025 population estimate), meaning they overtake the UK on most finishers per capita. Obviously though any number like this should be taken with a pinch of salt due to tourists etc. 🙂

@parkrunauofficial.bsky.social had a new record national attendance of 84,877 this morning. One year ago today the record stood at just 63,109.

Today was the first New Year's Day since 2012 with a lower global #parkrun attendance than preceding Christmas Day, thanks to heavy rain in the UK and Ireland (and >100 ensuing cancellations). It was still the 4th-highest non-Saturday total, and 2nd most unique NYD parkrunners.

The last #parkrun day of 2024 yesterday saw the 10th highest global attendance ever, and the highest ever seen in December. 1/4

Yesterday saw the second-highest global #parkrun attendance on a day other than Saturday (and the highest number of unique parkrunners). Bushy Park had the second-highest turnout at a single event.

Yesterday saw the highest global #parkrun attendance for a December date, up ~7k on the Saturday before Christmas last year.

parkrun New Zealand saw a new national attendance record of 9,512 this morning - their sixth of the year, and 35% up on the record going into 2024.

Thanks to Storm Darragh battering the UK and Ireland, yesterday saw the lowest global #parkrun attendance (168,483*) and parkrun UK attendance (52,874*) since 17 December 2022. *plus any pending results

There have now been over 100 million individual #parkruns on Saturday mornings around the world (as well as 1.6 million on other days of the week).

I have just discovered the drawback of the little plastic parkrun barcodes. Mine will have ended up being sorted along with all the finish tokens that were actually supposed to go in the bucket. 🤦‍♂️

I made an #OnlyConnect explainer now I finally have my head round the format.

You can't move for Stay Another Day at the moment, but this is still my favourite song that isn't a Christmas song that people think is a Christmas song. youtu.be/28PTc4WE-RY

@parkrunnewzealand.bsky.social saw their 3rd new event in as many weeks this morning and 13th this year - total number has grown 30% in just thelast 11 months of 12.5 year history. All events have taken place on 472/950 Saturdays including COVID pauses, and only 1 event (Porirua) has had to close.

Yesterday saw the lowest global Saturday #parkrun attendance since last Dec, thanks to Storm Bert hitting UK/Ire. parkrun UK saw their the lowest attendance since Dec 2022, and largest absolute drop aside from the COVID pause (although Beast from the East in March 2018 saw a bigger decrease as a %).

Hello World! Those of you following me before I'd even posted anything are probably doing so for parkrun stats, which is pretty much what I'll be using this account for, as well as the occasional wry aside. Hold on tight for the dullest of rides.
