This @thepolycrisis.bsky.social newsletter first paragraph omg (ā€œimperial gangsterismā€ šŸ”„) ā€” and does not even include everything

Awful situation across the University sector šŸ„² qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

Someone needs to invent some kind of online calculator whereby we Brits can put in our recent healthcare appointments/meds/experiences and itā€™ll calculate what it would cost on average in the USA. Just to hammer home how bloody lucky we are to have the NHS and how fiercely we need to protect it.

On the streets of Liverpool, there is a humanitarian crisis A perfect storm of problems means more and more people are finding themselves homeless & sleeping rough & itā€™s getting worse - itā€™s a situation playing out across the country A difficult šŸ§µ on what Iā€™ve found reporting on this situation

Echoes of our privatisation of public services in UK. The Tories want even less public interest considerations as they rule in favour of the wealthy. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Starmer is clearly beholden to the US and his corporate donors, one of whom is BlackRock, itself heavily invested in the Nevatim corridor and the annexation of Gazaā€™ gas fields.

The latest issue of Legal Studies is now online! A range of fascinating pieces! www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Devastating report but some small reason for optimism as ā€œThere are political leaders, as well as activists, scientists, renewable energy innovators and regular citizens doing all they can to turn things aroundā€¦They deserve our support and our partnership.ā€ bylinetimes.com/2024/11/20/c...

Trump tapped into peopleā€™s fears and immiseration. He exploited their anger and frustration. The Democrats offered nothing, no real change. Of course, Trump is lying but people are desperate for change.

After yesterdayā€™s news hereā€™s a little picture to bring some cheer. Not a brilliant photo but I managed to get the lovely squirrel to look in my direction for a second šŸ˜

We're on the cusp of seeing the effect play out of an extended lack of access to dental care. With preventative and ordinary care unavailable to many, they have to seek out accessible routes which are emergency care.

Lou Haighā€™s comments on P&O explicitly represent govt policy on fire and rehire and PMā€™s views. Itā€™s not her own view, itā€™s the governmentā€™s stated position. Starmer should have the integrity to stand by her or ditch the policy.

The ministers were right to criticise P&O Ferries. I remember the Parliamentary Select Committee hearings back in March 2022 - such disdain for the workforce from the CEO. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Excellent article on the profit maximisation and financial engineering tricks of the private equity firms, often at the expense of the most vulnerable. Greedy and immoral vulture capitalism. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Europeā€™s environmental programme faces a backlash from political and business interests fixated on growing the economy | Natalie Bennett

This is absolute madness. Carbon capture and storage has failed time and again. Labour has slashed reliable green programmes, to pour vast sums of our money into a complete crock. The only possible explanation is lobbying by fossil fuel companies.šŸ§µ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

ā€œThe problem for the Labour leader is that amid all the downbeat mood, his Government does already have a somewhat promising story to tell.ā€ I just hope the promise becomes reality and has results that will help to clear up the mess we are in. bylinetimes.com/2024/09/24/k...

ā€œWe have to tell the residents of north Gaza that they have one week to evacuate the territory, which then becomes a military zone, [a zone] in which every figure is a targetā€ An explicit announcement that they will execute every human in north Gaza - another statement of genocidal intent today.

These donations were declared by Starmer pre-GE, so where was the interest then when it actually mattered? *Especially* when heā€™d point blank refused to declare donors to his Labour Leadership campaign - which were as expected sketchy AF. Yā€™all didnā€™t care then OR most recently. Report on that.

The whole neoliberal system is inhumane. This is one important area of that failing system. Compassion for everyone in it - the job seekers and those who can help them- sorely needed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Itā€™s very difficult to mend broken trust. This new government has got its work cut out already. There is no room for the naivety on display in these early days. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Probably the greatest example of "wow, glad someone funded that when we needed it" in social scientific history. An amazing decade of work that made a real and lasting impact.

How is this acceptable? It makes no sense.

Interesting happenings on the left. I'm watching this. Green Party is shifting left. Corbyn and the Indy MP alliance is left, plus they're the unofficial Opposition. Now there's talk of a new leftwing party. It does need to happen if we don't want Farage for PM. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The extraordinary collapse of some state functions at the end of the Sunak Ministry should haunt the Conservative Party forever. It's a very long road back from here. www.thetimes.com/article/eddc...
