Yes, it is entirely correct to point out that ICE officers do not have any legal authority to break into somebody’s home unless they get a judicial warrant; which they generally cannot do, because judges only issue warrants for probable cause of crimes, not immigration law violations.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

It’s weird how we’ve memory holed the fact that Obama entered his first term with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and a majority in the House and McConnell’s response was “We’re going to make Obama a one-term president,” not “there’s little we can do”

Not true. I'll give you some examples of when styles crossed over from womenswear to menswear, and how men have worn straight-up womenswear or just feminine styles in cool ways. 🧵

I'm working on a couple of upcoming talks and can't get over how simply describing what is happening right now with attacks on the NSF, NIH, Diversity, etc. makes me sound like a raving lunatic. They've launched an all-out assault on empirical reality.

A reality is that a ton of nonprofit organizations & other facilities are laying-off a ton of people, and sometimes outright shuttering, because they still haven't received federal funding they were contractually promises. Many websites are still not up. And a lot more. All despite court orders.

Republicans in Congress want Americans struggling to afford student loan payments to shell out nearly $200 more each month to fund tax cuts for billionaires.

Many have asked how it could cost $17.5 million to confine just over 100 unhoused people to a warehouse for 90 days. The answer? The company running the facility got a no-bid contract and has political ties to Louisiana governor Jeff Landry—who invoked emergency powers to detain these men and women

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic. This is devastating

All this futzing with NIH research funding sure would be lousy for a region where the largest employer ranks third in NIH funding nationally. Say, what’s this?

The story of the peacock chair is one of colonial carceral labor, American Victorian leisure, and the Black Power movement.

If you can. When you can. However you can. Try your best to create. Not just art. Anything. Gardening, writing, crocheting… lean into your hobbies… Create **NOT** for the sole purpose of resisting or grifting but because we all need an outlet, a distraction, something else that is anything else.

This is very good. Clear and succinct.

Ah, the millennial experience of “every time you get some measure of financial and career stability, the world decides to do something extraordinarily stupid again”

Hayao Miyazaki's short guide to watercolor painting -- we put this translation together a couple of years ago

Did you know? In 1968, 24 Black men in Pittsburgh revolutionized emergency medicine. The Freedom House Ambulance Service was established to provide emergency medical care to underserved Black neighborhoods—creating the world’s first paramedics.

So if I’m understanding today correctly, the world’s richest person Elon Musk, whom no one elected, is taking over federal payment systems and employee data while the federal employees who investigate and prosecute public corruption are being fired en masse.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

If the FAA director got fired over a business beef AND there was an air traffic controller hiring freeze despite huge shortages AND a chaotic blitz to hollow out federal bureaucracy, and then within a week the first American airliner crashes in 16 years, you would be insane not to talk about it all.

Help me identify this WWII soldier for a story I'm writing. My deadline is Feb. 14. The portrait was made between 1943 & 1945 in Pittsburgh's Hill District. He has a rifle medal on his chest, Service Forces patch & a Corps of Engineers insignia on his hat. Please repost & help me ID him. 🗃️

My deeply reported story about the five-years-later impact of Trump gutting two research agencies got BURIED in all the news yesterday. Please read and share it!

Revelations about the role Robert F. Kennedy Jr. played in a deadly measles outbreak in Samoa keep getting worse.

The story behind RFK Jr. in Samoa's measles crisis has never been reported. He wasn't there to spread misinformation about vaccines (though he did). He wanted to study a "natural experiment" of unvaccinated kids. “I can’t imagine anything less ethical or more cruel.” www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

If the U.S. had a responsible media, it would make this the lead national-politics story for several days. Especially in Florida.

Pittsburgh started a $1M medical debt relief program in 2023 to help residents burdened with unpaid medical bills. 2 years later, the program has yet to clear a dollar. The region’s largest health systems — UPMC and AHN — have declined to participate in the program. www.wesa.fm/health-scien...

Also yes project 2025 was always the plan.

I want everyone to understand that rescission of 1965 antidiscrimination orders is literally resegregation and for reporters in the room to press them accordingly also the gall of revoking the *Equal Employment Opportunity* directive. man affirmatively said 'I want unequal employment opportunities'

As usual, the entire premise here is false. Left-leaning people talk constantly about how to improve government programs. Meanwhile, conservatives are not 'talking seriously' about improving efficiency, they are attempting to gut government services en masse. www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/arc...

teensy tiny correction: the government does not have to provide you an attorney for immigration court, so you should make arrangements with one now. Just someone you can call if you get yoked up by ICE. If you ask for one, they will not and do not have to provide you one.

If you’re in Pittsburgh and you see any ICE activity in your neighborhood, call Casa San José's rapid response team: 412-736-7167. More info here: www.casasanjose.org/er

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

I keep an informal little equation in my head at all times: irony-poisoned → low trust → fascism I don’t care if it’s cringe. You have to believe in things, earnestly, to acknowledge that progress is happening and better things yet remain. Your “lol, lmao” at every little thing is death.

BREAKING: Officers enforcing immigration laws will now be able to arrest migrants at sensitive locations like schools and churches after the Trump administration threw out policies limiting where those arrests could happen.

The new White House has already deleted dozens of environmental justice websites and reports. Worry not, they’re all backed up on various independent university websites. eelp.law.harvard.edu/tracker-type... 🧪🌎

Bryan MacCormack, the executive director of a New York-based immigrant rights group, was pulled over by CBP with two undocumented passengers in the vehicle. He knew his rights, refused to acknowledge their "warrant", and despite CBP threatening him, the agents eventually were forced to let him go.

I know it’s banging my head against a wall at this point but the reason your ancestors came over legally through Ellis Island is because back then all you had to do to come legally was not die on the boat
