Congratulations to all best poster awards and honorable mentions!

@chachachen.bsky.social @haokunliu.bsky.social @divingwithorcas.bsky.social present posters on human-AI decision making, hypothesis generation, interpretability and fairness at MMLS 2025!

Live-blogging is tough, try to do a real live blogging session on the AI 2050 fellow panel session.

Wei Hu talked about abrupt learning in transformers, what happens during the loss plateau?

Since @elenal3ai.bsky.social cannot make it, I presented the poster on concept incongruence: arxiv.org/abs/2505.14905

Han Zhao talked the scalarization problem in multitask learning

Zahra Ghodsi talked about federated learning with confidence and argued that ML may need to satisfy different requirements that contradict with each other.

Sijia Liu talks about machine unlearning

First talk is from @ravenben.bsky.social on Societal Impact and the Ivory Tower: An Adversarial ML Perspective. Reflecting on how we do not ask Should we enough

MMLS is happening today at UChicago! @dsi-uchicago.bsky.social

LLMs excel at finding surprising “needles” in very long documents, but can they detect when information is conspicuously missing? 🫥AbsenceBench🫥 shows that even SoTA LLMs struggle on this task, suggesting that LLMs have trouble perceiving “negative spaces”. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2506.11440 🧵[1/n]

A bit late to announce, but I’m excited to share that I'll be starting as an assistant professor at UMD CS @univofmaryland.bsky.social this August. I'll be recruiting PhD students this upcoming cycle for fall 2026. (And if you're a UMD grad student, sign up for my fall seminar!)

We are doing our best to encourage engagement during the discussion period. It's moving, even if we wish folks would engage more. 🫵🫵🫵Reviewers, please login, read author responses, consider them, write back! 🫵ACs🫵, we need your help too :)

Hamilton, Tawn, Firth (2023) "The many routes to the ubiquitous Bradley-Terry model": arxiv.org/abs/2312.13619 Very cool! I've considered writing notes on how BT models can be motivated in myriad ways, with diff motivations leading to diff generalizations. This looks like a fantastic crack at that.

News🗞️ I will return to UT Austin as an Assistant Professor of Linguistics this fall, and join its vibrant community of Computational Linguists, NLPers, and Cognitive Scientists!🤘 Excited to develop ideas about linguistic and conceptual generalization (recruitment details soon!)

Some interesting work suggesting that recent shocking RL+LLM results are due to incorrect baselines and most of the gains are from better format following: safe-lip-9a8.notion.site/Incorrect-Ba...
