🚨 WANT TO HELP US STAND UP FOR SCIENCE? 🚨 Here's a little update on where we're currently at with the planning process! Is your state red or grey & you want to see an event happen? Fill out our volunteer form or share with a friend! airtable.com/app4h5wUssMG... #standupforscience2025

The Trump Administration is maintaining the NIH grant freeze despite lawsuits challenging the order, a Nature article reported today. Science funding in the US is already lagging, leaving researchers in limbo. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I'll be at the #StandUpforScience2025 rally in DC. Which one will you be joining? Register: standupforscience2025.org

The federal workforce is bearing much of the brunt of this assault and the opposition needs to rally around them. Labor rights are constitutional rights.

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. https://go.nature.com/4gM6oW4

Hello this is not ok!!!

Can someone please explain to me why study sections are getting canceled at last minute???

Scientists, I love you. I love your passion. I am one of you. But we have to talk about *how* we communicate what’s happening. People won’t fight for “science” in the abstract. They’ll fight when they understand what they are losing. A quick guide: Not this, but this. 🧵

As more information emerges about the firing of probationary employees from the NIH, it’s becoming clear how these actions are cruel and stupidly incompetent. Why you might ask? 1/

Reason 741618 why I stand up for science: 96% of individuals with eating disorders experience at least one barrier to accessing care (@taylorepenwell.bsky.social) and 50% respond to our best treatments. 1/

When a judge stops the president from doing something illegal, that’s not a “threat to democracy,” that’s a check on the president’s power. That's the whole damn point.

Can I interest y'all in a preprint in these trying times? My student Joy Qiu recently completed work on using ensembles of LLMs to perform coding of free text response data. A 🧵

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

Get in dorks, we're going protesting! STAND UP FOR SCIENCE WITH US ON MARCH 7TH, 2025 WASHINGTON DC AND EVERY STATE CAPITOL Because science is for everyone! Find us at www.standupforscience2025.org #standupforscience2025 #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

Get in Dorks, we are going protesting. STAND UP FOR SCIENCE. MARCH 7th 12-4pm. DC AND YOUR STATE CAPITALS. More information to come.

Can’t believe I’m typing this but… FUCK IT IM PLANNING A STAND UP FOR SCIENCE PROTEST IN DC. If you want to be involved, be dm me. I’m nervous, I’ve never done this before, but we gotta be the change we want to see in the world.

“This is about as open-and-shut as it gets. If the NIH announcement is challenged in court, I am 99.9% confident that it will immediately be overturned.”

US military budget: $850 billion US National Institutes of Health indirect costs: $9 billion That they are so focused on cutting the budget of the latter says everything.

Massive protest happening in Union Square right now to defend trans youth from President Trump’s attempts at eradication.

The argument that all these federal cuts are to improve efficiency & save the US money is literally bogus The billionaires in charge could pay slightly higher taxes, still be billionaires, & fund all these programs in the US Complete garbage. The problem is concentrated wealth not inefficiency

Related to the recent discussion on VAS measurement in EMA, my student Siqi Sun recently submitted some work we did on understanding the measurement properties of more traditional Likert scales vs. VAS scales: A 🧵

I keep trying to wake up from this nightmare….

The Senate HELP Committee has jurisdiction over NIH. GOP members of the committee represent AK, AL, IN, FL, KS, KY, LA, ME, MO, OH, and SC. Research universities and hospitals in those states need to be extra loud.

Fridays are now ominous days in these United States. You wonder what fresh package of hell would be dropped at close of business. Changes to NIH funding? Medicaid cuts? Every week a different flavor of misery is unlocked.

I think it's important to say that these are not "budget cuts" at NIH and NSF. If they want to cut the next budget, they should talk to Congress. This is withholding money that's already authorized.

This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction. We all need to speak out to save lives.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

The NIH announced it will slash billions of dollars of support to universities and research centers. This is one of the biggest attacks on science we have ever seen. It could dismantle the biomedical research system, shut down clinical trials, and halt development of treatments.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

I would like to point out to the finance bros out there, all your tech stocks, pharma stocks, biotechnology, they are about to tank. You defund the NIH, the universities, the research infrastructure, who do you think is buying the 10x genomics plarforms? The novel monoclonals? The NMEs?

is it woke to want to end cancer?

Can they really do this? This will decimate research universities

BREAKING: We’re suing the Trump administration for refusing to issue passports with accurate sex designations for transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people. This action violates the Constitution.

In KY the #eatingdisorder council has worked to introduce legislation to ensure insurance coverage for eating disorders & limit the use of BMI to determine coverage. Woohooo!!! Let’s go! apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/25rs/...
