The more people wearing masks, the better. They cannot single people out as easily for masking if there are tons of people who are masked. Please protect each other. Center the most marginalized among us and care for one another.

please be conscientious of the way you talk about ā€œmasked peopleā€ these days; some face coverings are poor excuses for protection as they are used as vehicles for oppression, others—respirators—are themselves tools of liberation. act like it. mask up & support maskblocs. www.tiktok.com/t/ZTjgaeMAa/

Hallucinations as attack vectors - yikes. ā€œMalicious actors also vibe code and look for the names of packages that LLMs think should exist, then they go and create those packages themselves, but include malware in those fake packagesā€

Someone else said something very similar to this the other day, but. It really burns me that our (millennials') generation was legally terrorized for like, downloading Radiohead discographies But we're supposed to be ok with billionaires stealing human intellectual output in its entirety bc AI

Can’t wait for this one!

1 in 5-10 people who get COVID end up with Long COVID. Only 1 in 20 of them get any kind of help. This isn’t just a health care failure, it’s a human rights failure. And it’s happening in slow motion, every day, while the world moves on. That’s it. That’s the whole post.

Could be huge. Especially for those terminated in the anti-DEI purge. "...NIH will allow individuals whose mentored career development awards prematurely ended on or after January 1, 2025, to be eligible to apply for a new mentored career development award" grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

It was an absolute tour de force. No punches pulled. No sugar coating. Just pure, brave, and essential insight from my great friend @celinegounder.com

Big update to scienceimpacts.org: See the devastating impact of cancelled NIH grants across the country, and how losses at specific institutions ripple out to surrounding communities. This is all in addition to the future losses that would result from cutting funds for indirect costs of research.

this thread is long for a reason—it attempts to lay out a call to action to do something proactive at the state level to help protect healthcare for trans people. this will be more important than ever as the federal government tightens its fist on trans care. please read. ā¬‡ļø help if you can. šŸ’œ

Stated plainly, in U.S. scientific research it’s common for doctoral graduates to move to a different lab and do postdoctoral work on a new research project. These postdocs are the driving workforce in research: motivated, highly skilled, minimal supervision needed. Canceling OPT cancels postdocs.

It only took me a minute or two!

ā€œShould AI be allowed to review papers or grant proposalsā€ always reveals a thing I think people don’t understand about algorithmic bias 🧵

May issue is online! Explore reviews on the #neuroimmune axis! The beautiful cover was designed by Ella Marushchenko, working with @jonykipnis.bsky.social. A brain encased in a walnut shell that is cracking open symbolizes our growing understanding of #neuroimmunology www.cell.com/immunity/iss...

Population wide supplementation as a public health intervention is not new and has yielded incredible health benefits through the years don't let the misguided attacks on fluoridated water fool you. Why do you think iodide is added to table salt? Since we are intent of forgetting history here is a 🧵

In fact, I spent a whole three years of my life trying to understand the extent to which COVID in pregnancy is a problem. Unfortunately, we found it’s a really big problem for both mom and baby.

A baby's life was saved thanks to a custom gene-editing treatment that was made just for him and designed to fix his precise mutation. The therapy was built on decades of federally funded research, and could one day treat millions. But advances like this are at risk due to science funding cuts.

Nobel Prize winning science.

Anyone giving cover to what the administration is doing, giving a pass to the high level bureaucrats and political appointees responsible for this destruction is complicit as are those sitting on the sidelines in this fight as well. It's all hands on deck time. www.statnews.com/2025/05/08/t...

One thing about researchers is we will publish our way through the attempts to cancel us. New paper in @jama.com, the authors examine the impact of NIH grant cancellations on the US research enterprise by institute or center and ward type. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Measles. Is. Back. A disease we had basically eradicated in the U.S. is now spreading in schools, hospitals, and communities. Why? Because misinformation kills. 🧵

Whooping cough is on the rise again. Why is this happening and what can you do about it? Pleased to share this brief explainer for a lay audience written by @syramadad.bsky.social and me. www.nyas.org/ideas-insigh...

Abstract deadline is tomorrow, 06 May. Would love to see you there!

the thing teenage boys need to hear more than anything else is that it is actually okay if they don't grow up to be men at all. they don't have to feel invested in the political interests of men as a class, bc they dont have to BE men. it's okay if they grow up to be women, or something else :)

Scientists have created a broadly effective antivenom using the blood of a Wisconsin man who has spent years exposing himself to deadly snakebites from black mambas, taipans, cobras and many others.

Country/world still not ok, but here’s my go-to rƶsti recipe: 1 med-lg russet šŸ„”, peeled 2 green onions, white & green parts shred (food processor) brief water rinse squeeze dry toss with salt, pepper, spices (ground fenugreek and smoked paprika ftw!) mix in 1 egg hot oiled skillet, flip when crispy

There has been a significant reduction in the number of kids getting the flu vaccine over the past 5 years—a drop from 64% to 49%. Consequently, there have been 216 pediatric flu deaths so far this flu season, the highest number since the swine flu 15 years ago (link below). Vaccinate.

People don't know. And 10s of thousands of young people were immediately pulled off work including rebuilding after hurricane damage.

Don’t miss the author and sample donor interview by Ari Daniel on today’s All Things Considered @npr.org — very fun! šŸ

Though every Cell paper is special, I occasionally get a paper that ✨delights✨ me from start to finish. These astute scientists found a unique opportunity to study an audacious snake venom enthusiast and uncovered antibodies that could serve as a broad antidote to snakebites. šŸ

Another gobsmacking lie from this administration. Public radio and television are driven by a mission to serve the entire public, period. There is no more neutral, responsible, and non-partisan source of news in the U.S. Maligning public broadcasting is pure villainy. www.npr.org/2025/05/02/n...
