Finished my Voynich scarf. Yarn from @isasaxonists.bsky.social #RepublicofYarnia, colors inspired by an AI generated bestiary inspired by the Voynich manuscript. Art made from art yarn inspired by an AI fake that calques a manuscript that is not fake but some people think it is

😍😍😍

The thing about federal bureaucracy is that all the institutional knowledge that makes them work invisibly in such as making sure your milk doesn't contain formaldehyde, is stored inside people who would make twice as much money in another job.

my kid has a joke pronunciation of "horse" (long story). Tonight we were chatting about something vaguely language and horses related, and he looked at me, and said "yakwe" in that same silly voice. Tagging @mweissohcgl.bsky.social ; apparently I'm bringing a bit of work home

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

COGEL is the Linguistic Society of America's Committee on Gender Equity in Linguistics and this is their 5th Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. Whether you're a longtime Wikipedia contributor or looking to start, this is a great group to get involved with. You don't have to be an LSA member to join either!

Today I've discovered an animal called "Skeleton panda sea squirt" exists. A sessile, filter feeding tunicat.

“I seek to move away from concepts of ‘data collection’ and ‘fieldwork’ by understanding data as knowledge and the field as a place of relations, not a research location to fly in and fly out of.”

I read a lovely paper this morning. Lauren Tynan's paper (based on experiences as an Indigenous woman and academic from lutruwita) has so much to think about. Her paper talks in beautiful terms about what "data" means and how one person's "data" is another's life.

And in week 5 we learn subtweeting: ceṃsc nāki yolo tswentär skiyo ramt.

And in addition, it assumes there's no linguistic classification involved. Never a good thing when one is dealing with language

Linguistics people who like thinking about database stuff will appreciate the issues brought up in this thread

No one lets go of anyone’s hand.

In a sentence never before uttered by humans, I am delighted to share that an alligator stole my conservation instructor’s hat by jauntily walking into the water while wearing it 🐊

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
