Had a great day at American University presenting my work with @chrambrosio.bsky.social and Juliana Quigua on the effects of U.S. immigration enforcement policies in El Salvador. Big thanks to Maria Esther Caballero for the invite and the thoughtful discussion. Working paper coming soon! #EconSky

Ganz Gallien? Nein! Ein von unbeugsamen Galliern bevölkertes Dorf hört nicht auf, dem Eindringling Widerstand zu leisten www.wahlen-berlin.de/wahlen/BU202...

Quite astonishing: The Left (Die Linke) is the strongest party in Germany among those aged 18-24

Winter is back

Terrible to see the cancellation of the public talk by Albanese with Eyal Weizman at FU Berlin after pressure by the mayor 🇩🇪 has contributed morally and materially to the destruction of Gaza; a moral catastrophe bsky.app/profile/robi...

„Is this economics?” has gone a long way 😁

States finding new ways of how to capitalize migrants.

German mainstream migration discourse has now reached the “they eat cats and dogs” stage of racism. I have no hope no more.

Barely audible in the noise of the center's lockstep march to the right: The Bundestag's most repressive resolution yet will pass today. "Resolutely countering antisemitism and hostility towards Israel at 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 and securing space for free discourse". Co-sponsored by SPD & Greens.

For german speakers: i gave my opinion on the conflict over deportation flights between trump and petro at tagesschau www.tagesschau.de/ausland/amer...

“his screeds against immigrants have, I believed, unleashed forces of hatred that he can’t rein in. And these forces will make America poorer as well as uglier” Could of course replace America here for any other country taken over by the right

We were a bit ahead of time with this publication that never received much attention for some reason: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... We are arguing that the US pays a price of losing its closes allies in Latin America as a result of deportation policies.

Deportations are an important part of conflicts between states, with agency also among those who receive deportees. A new paper I was to present yesterday at @the-peio.bsky.social l conference (had I not been in bed with a flu) is about how countries leverage aid against deportations

Summary of doctor visit in Germany: “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and “ibuprofen is for softies”

first time and excited to visit Cambridge (US) for the Political Economy of International Organziation (PEIO) conference next week, presenting our paper on aid allocation and deportation enforcement: www.peio.me/program-and-...

My dear colleague Manuel Santos Silva is organizing a junior workshop on the economics of Latin America un Berlin. Apply!

Interesting but also concerning the daily episode on big tech’s honeymoon with trump: podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/t... So much there that made me think about the alliances between capitalism and fascism in the 1930s

The kind of seminar will wish I could attend if I was a student👇

If you happen to be at #ASSA in San Francisco come to our session where we present our study on labor market effects of deportations in El Salvador: www.aeaweb.org/conference/2...

Don’t miss this important migration workshop organized by @steinhardt.bsky.social in Berlin - deadline for junior researchers is today!

Protesting drastic budget cuts for Berlin universities today. We need more not less investment in research and teaching!! RIP #BrainCityBerlin

The CfP for the #German #Development #Economics (GDE) conference 2025 is out, hosted by #Goethe university in #Frankfurt on June 12-13 (keynote: Lori Beaman). Send us your best development papers: events.gwdg.de/e/gde2025. @heidland.bsky.social @langlotzsarah.bsky.social

Immigration enforcement policies can have important unintended consequences in both destination & origin countries. I discuss our own research & contributions from Maria Esther Caballero, Thomas Pearson & @chrambrosio.bsky.social to this critical topic in FocoEconomico #EconSky tinyurl.com/26hhu3kw

The German government will pass a law to facilitate deportations, called “Rückführungsverbesserungsgesetz” in our uniquely German way of naming things taz.de/!5983182 Time to mention a few of the unintended effects of deportations nobody wants to talk about:
