My university bookstore manager tells me they cannot stock used copies of some Pearson textbooks because Pearson will only "Rent" a paperback directly from Pearson. I heard the goal was for Pearson to destroy the used textbook market. I'm never going to assign one of their books again.

I hear a lot of stories of harassment in academia. And the thing that always makes me the most upset is learning about the victim’s work. They’re literally always doing something important. Sometimes, their research could literally save lives. And so many of them are forced out of their careers.

In honor of the #ICA25 program being available, I present my favorite ever entry in an ICA program.

“It’s a reminder that you don’t actually own much of the digital content you consume, and without the ability to back up copies of ebooks, you could lose them entirely if they’re banned and removed.” www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

This is a dangerous misunderstanding of the fascists' goals and agenda. They want to dismantle democratic society and research is one aspect of this. From project 2025: "research conducted with taxpayer dollars serves the national interest in a concrete way in line with conservative principles".

I was today years old when my 'home' academic association had to issue a statement that the 'evolving situation' in🇺🇸 is monitored ahead of a conference. Letters for travel will not include paper titles. Because many of us research important topics. In the bigger picture, small, for academics huge😢

Bluesky has, due this current events, become the depressing news app.

It has come to our attention that some of the parasites who "work" for the federal government were actually in charge of saving us from the bird flu. Our bad. We're trying to recruit them back to the office now. Let us know if you know where they are.

New career goal: be accused of “being in league with” some person or organization. I will, of course, hotly deny it.

PSA for academic researchers: Now is a good time to consider who has access to--and who is in control of--your research files. We must do what we can to protect participant information and science more broadly from bad actors and interference. #AcademicSky #commsky

We need more of this!! There has been this sentiment that we need to comply until we get validation that these EOs are illegal. Do the opposite. Put the burden on the White House to prove they have legal standing. Don’t comply with something that we know should be transparently illegal.

I know that all these institutions know how to push back because when Obama directed them to enforce pre-existing Title IX law, universities said no. They flat out refused until there was a working group and specific guidelines. And even then, they *still* refused.

<whispers> DEI is just another word for democracy. Democracy is diverse. Democracy is equality. Democracy is inclusive. Every attack on “DEI” is actually an attack on democracy.

Important guidance for supporting folks affected by executive branch targeting, from one of the leading experts on these issues.

The highlight of my day has been learning that I could switch back to the old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader that had fewer distracting attempts to "help" and an easier interface.

If Caroline Kennedy's letter to the Senate (as well as his dangerous track record) successfully thwarts RFK Jr.'s nomination (fingers crossed!), Hines will continue to sell her candles. But if he's confirmed, Hines says she'll stop..." www.jezebel.com/sophies-choi...

Imagine if a cyberattack did this. It would be an act of war.

When you resist the pressure to obey, the primary thing fascists will make you feel is guilty. They will tell you that *you* are the immoral one and they will distort your moral code to try to convince you that you share an ideology.

What if the journal editor, with advice from the reviewers, wrote the Limitations section of the journal article?

In 1953, Eisenhower signed an order banning queer people from working in the government. Agencies encouraged employees to report colleagues they suspected of being queer based on how they acted, spoke, dressed, or had masculine/feminine characteristics like wide jaws in women or small hands in men

In my home state (CA), NIH funded research generates $2.55 in economic activity for every $1.00 spent. 55,949 people have jobs research, treating, & curing disease thanks to NIH funding (www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...). NIH freezes are devastating (www.science.org/content/arti...)

The allyship we need

The Trump administration has argued that all single-sex safe spaces for women on college campuses are discriminatory against men and should be closed. At the same time, they’re claiming to be “protecting” these spaces is a central mission of their anti-LGBTQ initiatives. The hypocrisy is a tell.

More sunflowers are turning ... We will see more media compliance and collaboration in the coming weeks and months, but hey, a little shame and mockery can still work wonders for now. (Until they don't care anymore, that's when you know the rules have been changed.)

The precise wording is of less concern than the license they want to give to cops, teachers, TSA agents, little league coaches, and anyone with enough paranoia and free time to police how you look, dress, and act. Ask Imane Khleif--Their only definition of a "woman" is "we know it when we see it"

Loving these deep dives behind the scenes!

Two Scenarios: 1. Persuasion research advances to the point where only the truth is persuasive 2. Persuasion research advances to the point where anyone can be persuaded of anything The first leads to utopia The second leads to dangerous power 1/2

They're going to do what they're going to do, and the important thing is, so am I. My job right now is to look after my family, to find 1-2 more places to serve my local community, and to remember that the fuckers in power speak for themselves and their greed while saying they speak for the world.

Congratulations to the #ica25 reviewer who managed to write the most generic and unhelpful-in-the-most-words review I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Kids, don't write reviews like that.

Hey, so not to be a downer, but if you see this go check your carbon monoxide detector. If you don’t have one, get one - they’re cheap and easy to install. My husband just attended the funeral of his soccer buddy and his whole family who were wiped out by CO on Christmas Day and it’s so damn sad.
