I will keep the letter open until 3rd March, the date of the meeting called by the Royal Society to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows. So one more week to add your voice to the call for the RS to stand up for its values.

Now over 2700 signatories and still rising. Please keep sharing.

Interested in the Formation and Evolution of Earth's solid inner core? Of course you are! Well you're in luck, because Fred Wilson et al. read a load of stuff and succinctly summarised it here: rdcu.be/d9ALQ @universityofleeds.bsky.social @natrevearthenv.bsky.social

This from Magali Billen, UC Davis: Dr. Don Turcotte passed away yesterday. He was 92 years old. he was surrounded by family. His granddaughter had wanted to read something to Don in the hospital so his son suggested “Geodynamics” - she was reading to him in his final moments. ⚒️

You can't beat a good waterfall. So here's a good waterfall to brighten up your Sunday

Been watching The Madness on Netflix and it just feels like having a really recognisable beard and refusing to cut it is not the best strategy when the whole of America is looking for you

⭐️New paper alert!⭐️For those who like two-phase flows and planetary cores, here is a new fluid dynamical model that can explain the stable stratification of Earth's F-layer: sciencedirect.com/science/arti... @universityofleeds.bsky.social

More photos of random runs around the Yorkshire winter wonderland while it lasts!

What better way to ease into the new semester than a run through this little winter paradise. Might almost be ready to open Minerva

Tonight my wife introduced me to what she called the "sweeping look", which seems to be a quick glance around a room that ignores all the things I find important

After a beautiful Christmas in Rome I feel equally ready to take on the new semester and start a new life eating and drinking in the sun

Open faculty position for a polar scientist with @cpom-uk.bsky.social at @northumbriauni.bsky.social, University of the year (2022), Modern University of the year (2023) and ranked second for research power in Geography and Environmental Studies Apply before 13 Jan ! 🧪🌍🧊❄️🛰📳

I have been distinctly unpumped about attending AGU this year...until today, and now I am very pumped to see all the great people and the great science. See you in DC!

If you're interested in a funded PhD involving planetary magnetism, please consider these options at Leeds yes-dtn.ac.uk Is a Global Magnetic Field Required for Planetary Habitability? yes-dtn.ac.uk/research/is-... Understanding Reversals of Earth’s Magnetic Field yes-dtn.ac.uk/research/und...

This week is already an excellent week because it has not involved a grant rejection, paper rejection, or stolen laptop (most of which had happened by this time last week!)

Can't beat a bit of exploring in the snow!

Ok, now I've accepted that the old place is rubbish I'd better start posting here. So here's a view of beautiful snowy Saltaire from two days ago

Many congratulations to Paul Tackley, Professor of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, for being awarded the 2025 Arthur Holmes Medal and Honorary Membership by @eurogeosciences.bsky.social for achieving an exceptional international standing in solid Earth geosciences.

It is with great sadness that we share this tribute to the GFEI founder and much-loved colleague, Professor Steven Banwart, 1959 - 2023. forstaff.leeds.ac.uk/news/article... Please share your condolence messages at profstevenbanwart.muchloved.com

Lots of great PhD projects available at Leeds, York and Hull via the NERC Panorama DTP! I am offering a project on "the long term survival of Earth's magnetic field". If you are interested or want to know more give me a shout! Link is here... panorama-dtp.ac.uk/research/the...

Yesterday the brilliant Maeve Murphy Quinlan expertly defended her PhD on computational and petrological modelling of the pallasite parent body. Maeve has done great work and its been a pleasure working with her :) Big thanks to James Bryson and Phil Livermore for examining!

I have managed to write a model of Mercury's evolution that seems to simulate the planet in real time. Anyway, today the eternal code finally finished and gave results that could be considered plausible. I will not touch it again!

Work-ramen balance

Another day and Yorkshire is still showing off

November in Yorkshire ❤️

Today I learned that I cannot teach for more than 4 hours in a day. Not sure if that's in my contract, but it is a fundamental limitation of my capabilities

A paper we've been working on since before Covid is getting perilously close to completion and I'm not sure what I will do when I no longer have its spectre looming over me..

I can't imagine a better 9am meeting than one where our wonderful technical computing colleagues tell me how they've made our code faster 😍

"I've got a great out-of-office"... is not a thing I thought I would hear anyone say... until today

Happy Friday to those who celebrate! 🎈

My first post! Hi all - I'm a deep Earth geophysicist interested in the dynamics and evolution of planetary cores and mantles. I'm a Prof at University of Leeds and I'm looking forward to re-finding what has been lost from the other place :)
