the academy: sports are a culturally-insignificant object unworthy of study the literal pope:

The photos coming from Trump’s birthday parade are just incredible. No one showed up.

About 1.5% of the U.S. population protested today. (Closer to 1.9% if you only count the adult population.)

Nobody showing up to watch his stupid parade is honestly way funnier than a huge protest would have been

Lol the turn out for this parade is so pathetic

Watching my favorite team play.

“‘I should be paid for reviewing.’ Nope.” Absolutely correct.

Can tropical corals find refuge at higher latitudes under future warming? In our new paper in Science Advances, we argue that coral range expansion will be *far too slow* for most coral species to outpace climate change. 🪸🌊 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... A short 🧵 (1/16)

I have said this several times and I'll say it again - how McNutt is still the President of the National Academy of Sciences I simply do not understand. It's time for courageous leadership and she shows none of that. If the NAS can't stand up for science, who can? arstechnica.com/science/2025...

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Just like forams!

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

If you're coming to the @geosociety.bsky.social GSA meeting in San Antonio may I recommend this awesome field trip to visit the K/Pg boundary along the Brazos River and in a bunch of cores at the Gulf Coast Core Repository: store.geosociety.org/products/ft2...

Out today in Nature, our paper on the drivers of the record 2023 summer heating of the North Atlantic. Temperatures warmed to record levels in just a few months. The impacts on climate & ecosystems were severe. A thread on how this work came about and what we found.👇👇🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Deadline for session, field trip, and short course proposals is July 18!

Hey! Did you know you can Propose Sessions, Short Courses, and Field Trips for the FORAMS 2026 conference in Amherst? Because you can: sites.google.com/view/forams2...

You, too, should be very excited at the opportunities presented by there being no money to do science anymore.

When warnings of Insectageddon were issued a few years ago, there was widespread denial. Less so now. It's devastating. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Hey check out this new paper by former UT postdoc Katya Larina (plus former UT postdoc @foradamifera.bsky.social, @anshumans.bsky.social, @rowanmartindale.bsky.social, and Cori Meyers who I don’t think is here?) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is such a perfectly condensed little parable of the horrors of the bullshit machines: a completely ignorant and illiterate shibboleth against standard punctuation, born from nothing and threatening to take over in no time—meme as prion chewing holes in the brains of a generation

"Enhanced water column stratification and nutrient export to mesopelagic depths, associated with the intensification of..Glaciation, likely drove shifts in species diversity and ecogroup latitudinal gradients toward modern patterns" www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧪⚒️ #Paleobio #Macroecology #Geology

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

I am looking at NSF's budget request, in awe at the disinvestment in learning anything. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

Behold: the master at work

It's #ForamFriday! They're bizarre and beautiful, and their fossilized shells are a window into the past! UTIG's @chrislowery.bsky.social talked with @knowablemag.bsky.social about what forams can tell us about mass extinctions and climate change. Read more: knowablemagazine.org/content/arti...

This is SO COOL! Very rarely do I get to see a foraminifera actually using its pseudopodia, let alone one from the order Miliolida! I’ve seen lots of shells from this order, but none ALIVE and doing things! I’m very pleased to have witnessed such a wonderful process. 🦑 #plankton

🧪 Listen to my colleague Dr. Andy Fraass @fraass.bsky.social talk about his recent work re: levels of graduate student funding in Canada 🇨🇦 compared to the US 🇺🇸 & UK 🇬🇧. evil, racist, stupid, shameful

My latest story for @knowablemag.bsky.social is all about the astonishingly plentiful fossils of foraminifera, featuring @chrislowery.bsky.social, @fraass.bsky.social and @tracyaze.bsky.social! knowablemagazine.org/content/arti...

Pretty cool to get interviewed for this with a bunch of people I respect: knowablemagazine.org/content/arti...
