I've been named a Rising Star by APS! I'm so grateful to my nominators, and also to every person who's supported my career over the years. And of course I'm so flattered to get to share this title with so many people I admire. Congrats, all. 🙌🏻

More of this!

This is terrifying.

DOGE quietly deleted the 5 biggest spending cuts it celebrated last week: * An $8 billion cut at ICE was actually $8 million * Three $655 million cuts at USAID were actually a single cut counted three times * A $232 million cut at the SSA was actually $565,000 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/u...

I love this so much! It's inspiring to see university leaders refusing to capitulate to whoever happens to be in power. slate.com/life/2025/02...

No one had died of measles in America for ten years, until yesterday. That 2015 death in WA was preceded by a 12y period of no US deaths. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt... HHS Secretary RFK Jr. says it’s “not unusual.” apnews.com/article/meas... It is unusual. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...

This bill defines DEI as: “A program, policy, initiative, or activity designed or implemented to: Influence hiring or employment practices w respect to race, sex, color, ethnicity, nationality, country of origin, or sexual orientation”

I plan to call my Republican senators every day for the next 365 days. I'm going to chronicle the calls here for accountability, and to hopefully encourage others to do the same. Day 1 request: Please stop the Trump administration from attempting to limit NIH funding.

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:

NSF employees were unlawfully reclassified from career to probationary, and then fired. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

This is a huge deal! A federal judge, representing the American Association of University Professors, has blocked Trump's executive orders that seek to end federal support for DEI programming. www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

1. This guide on the (il)legality of Trump's actions from the first 30 days of his presidency is a great resource. 2. WHAT WORLD ARE WE LIVING IN. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/u...

No reason this can't happen everywhere

The numbers are in, and infant mortality rates indeed increased after Roe v. Wade was overturned. For example, infant mortality increased by 9.3 percent in the state of Texas alone. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

I'm not sure how many North Carolina faculty I'm connected to here, but I wanted to share a resource. I recently called NC's attorney general to ask that he take legal action against Trump's anti-DEI executive orders that threaten academic freedom. Sharing here in case others find it useful.

Many definitions of democracy are backward-looking—has the current leader been fairly elected? But definitions of democracy ought to be forward looking—will the next election be free and fair, such that power can still rotate at the will of the people? open.spotify.com/episode/47iN...

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

University chancellors in North Carolina have been told to immediately suspend all required courses relating to DEI. And it looks like the suspension also applies to required courses *within one's chosen major.* So like, this is bad, right? www.newsobserver.com/news/local/e...

The new cover of TIME.

Suppose you generated a sequence of 100 random numbers. Then one year later, you did it again. Do you think we could predict one sequence from the other? It turns out, we can! Now in press @ JEP:G with @samiyousif.bsky.social @actlab.bsky.social @robbrutledge.bsky.social; osf.io/preprints/ps...

The people of Gaza have a right to self-determination. I hope to God this is just bluster, and not a serious attempt to take control of a territory, force 1.8 million people into exile, and build a tourist attraction in Middle East. www.npr.org/2025/02/04/n...

Senate Democrats are considering delaying all Trump nominees as retaliation for his restructuring of USAID. This would go well beyond the "blanket hold" Sen. Schatz has placed on State Department nominees. Democrats are furious and want to signal a strong response. www.axios.com/2025/02/04/s...

We are members of Congress at the Treasury Department. We want to be let in to provide oversight on behalf of our constituents. @jasmineforus.bsky.social @sethmagaziner.bsky.social

Vote Bonobo 2026.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

if I understand American politics correctly, progressivism is something that requires 60 senate votes to work, while national conservatism doesn’t require any votes at all

Hi I’m running late today due to not being ready.

Who would have guessed that open access and open science non-profits such as @archive.org and @cos.io are useful just in case your government want to delete scientific data? And yet, here we are.

Found this gem in an arcane NSF doc...key to know: The Constitution and law SUPERSEDES exec orders! "In the event of a conflict between policies issued at a lower tier versus policies issued at a higher tier, the higher tier policy will take precedence" nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/Resear...

This tweet motivated me to actually try calling my elected officials, and I feel so empowered. It feels good to get to use your voice, and I second the idea that 5calls.org is a great resource for getting started. If others are on the fence, I encourage you to just take the plunge.

I want to spell out the basic reason it’s so dangerous for Elon to have control of the U.S. payments system. It may seem like a technical matter, but the dynamics are simple. 1/x

The media is not prepared for this: the oligarch's coup should not be the third most important story of the day. Don't be distracted: tariffs are stupid and damaging, but they are not illegal. Nothing is more important right now than the dismantling of democracy happening right in front of us.

Small but consequential things you can do right now: 1. Donate money to an organization that is fighting: defending the vulnerable, preserving data, whatever. 2. Call your electeds. 5calls.org makes this easy. 3. Buy a paid subscription to an independent news source
