DOGE-driven journal cancellations at USDA's National Agricultural Library: '[like] burning down the Library of Alexandria.' #scientificpublishing #libraryscience #academiclibraries @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

"Kit Johnson, the director of trade compliance at the US customers broker John S. James, also predicts prices and waste to increase. But what raises the most alarms for him is the increased likelihood of invasive species slipping through inspection cracks." (1/2) buff.ly/Q1DapkQ

This is a hard (emotionally) read, but important to show the real and deadly impacts of these cuts. People are dying right now, not just programs and American global influence. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I was just informed that the USDA-ARS National Agricultural Library has canceled many of their subscriptions to science journals. Tell me how this is efficient?!? Scientists need these journals to ... you know .... do science! This feels a lot like abdicating scientific leadership. SMH

Nice work NBC on this piece which goes into some great detail on the invasive species impacts of these cuts. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

We weren't sure it would be possible, but huge thanks to the Eastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America for supporting a last-minute symposium highlighting stories from terminated federal employees at the meeting on March 17th. #entomology 🧪 esa.confex.com/esa/2025eb/m...

As dismissals and program closures mount at agencies like the USDA-ARS, ripple effects will include more pests in fields, fewer pollinators, rising food costs, and more invasive species. A grassroots organization of scientists (@standupforscience.bsky.social) has organized “Stand Up for Science” rallies in Washington, DC, and 31 other U.S. cities this Friday, March 7. If you plan to participate, be sure to explore ESA’s Advocacy Resources. Links and examples below! buff.ly/9yvl4ec

This is good news. For now. But keep the foot on the gas, science. There is more to be done. www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

I had to come all the way to Puerto Rico to catch up with one of my favorite Brits. #AMCA @flygirlnhm.bsky.social

"This week the UC Davis-educated medical entomologist ... was terminated from her job as a Malaria Outbreak Emergency Advisor for the USAID. ... She worked to support President's Malaria Initiative countries in Africa with strategic planning for malaria outbreaks."

Thanks for documenting, Kathy. Well done. It reads like a requiem. Which, I suppose, is fitting. #OneOfUs

This is a tragedy. Couple this with the changes to the WH Press pool and one could be forgiven if they thought the death of free & independent media in the US was coming soon. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/... Congratulations on a great ~150 year history WaPo. Sorry to see it end this way.

The recent federal firings will leave the US ill-prepared to fight future disease and pest outbreaks, endangering health, crops, and American quality of life. Working as a federal scientist IS serving your country. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/s...

If you're an entomologist who lost your position in this nonsense, please message me. If you're an organization seeking a taxonomist or a broadly trained entomologist, reach out. I'm also looking for professors seeking PhD students, globally. #entomology 🧪

today in Bummer Emails. (if you have mosquito insectary space & can help, please reach out if you haven’t already!) 🦟

This is what happens when you move fast and break things: www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...

You've probably seen @lschiff.bsky.social @camitchell.bsky.social @rouhiroo.bsky.social @petersuber.bsky.social & my posts about the declaration to #DefendResearch. Today I've written about it in @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/02/19/d...

I spent my lunch today rewatching @shawnotto.bsky.social plenary speech from #EntSoc24. Worth the time (though I'd recommend 1.5x speed). Start at 56:40 on this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=39KG.... Pull quote: "Science is never partisan. Science is always political."

Today marks my 4-year anniversary in this job. I'm celebrating by eating chocolate for breakfast.

Observation - I should slow down a bit to improve my handwriting. I'm spending a lot of time trying to decipher what I wrote in my notepad during #EntSoc23. Any guesses?

Congratulations to AOS for this huge announcement. We will look forward to supporting your progress.

I'm still desperately trying to recreate what used to be bug-Twitter for me. Here's hoping that a black-widow pumpkin will help me find my long-lost entomology crowd.

I am starting to work on my slides for the @entsocamerica.bsky.social plenary. Which plays better as a "welcome to Washington" message?

Just wrapped up the great European Congress of Entomology in Crete. I particularly enjoyed this dinner with the leaders of other EntSocs around the world (India, Royal, Serbian, Taiwan, Brazil, Hungary, Finland, Belgium, Korea, Greece, and of course @entsocamerica.bsky.social)

Great podcast from NYT The Daily. This is why EntSoc's Vector Borne Disease Network is so important. www.nytimes.com/2023/10/05/p...

I hate to quibble, because the @washingtonpost.com article was good, but ... the @entsocamerica.bsky.social common names database lists the insect as "bed bug" not "bedbug". www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/1...
