Goosebump producing news this week out of Oregon Health and Science University in the diagnosis of pancreatic CA. They developed a groundbreaking blood test, called PAC-MANN. This new test can find pancreatic cancer in just 45 minutes, even in its earliest stages.

Between my regular work, reviewing funding applications for an NIH panel likely to be cancelled, and general angst due to, well, everything, I never posted some of the photos I took on Feb 02, 2025, the last time I took my camera out. Here is a goldfinch in my backyard 📷🪶

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

“We’re fucked.” Good write-up in Nature on how the current administration has used the Federal Register as a workaround to block NIH spending without seeming to violate the injunction against the spending freeze. If it’s not rectified by September, billions of $$ for science research will be lost.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

THIS IS HUGE! For the FIRST time in history, scientists at Sanaria and Seattle Children's Research Institute's Center for Global Infectious Disease Research (CGIDR) have developed a GROUNDBREAKING malaria vaccine (PfSPZ-LARC2) designed to provide >90% protection with just ONE dose. 🧪🧵⬇️

Over on LinkedIn, the head of the Executive Secretariat of the NIH -- a central part of NIH leadership 🧪🩺-- resigned with a lettter worth reading www.linkedin.com/posts/nathan...

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Another consequence from Trump's attack on science : Vanderbilt has temporarily paused graduate student admissions. Current graduate students and faculty raised alarm about research funding, doctoral stipends, visas and career opportunities vanderbilthustler.com/2025/02/15/g...

Well that’s interesting www.reuters.com/world/us/fda...

A study has revealed a potentially significant link between adult vaccinations and a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The research sheds new light on how certain vaccines may contribute to brain health and longevity. 🧪 www.thebrighterside.news/health/new-s...

A leak in a pipe in the ceiling of the lab, right next to our electrophysiology equipment. A student called facilities and two plumbers came within minutes to fix the issue from both sides of the wall. 🧪 1/n

I still don't think it's sunk in to many that after February 20th, there ain't no study sections.

NIH grants peeps are working hard, on a Sunday night, trying to get our grants out to us as their world is in chaos. We owe them all a huge debt. Science peeps: be sure to send your grants personnel (grants management, POs and SROs) a note of encouragement and gratitude. @sarathomasy.bsky.social

“The president has completely stopped funding for research that discovers cures for diseases that devastate families across the country, like cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, all so he can give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations… crushing families’ hopes and dreams of having cures.”
