MA commuter rail riders, do be sure and take their winter survey! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Hello out there from cold and snowy Boston! We're excited to get started on Bluesky and looking forward to a new social media experience on such an exciting platform. LFG!

This statistic blew my mind. I had no idea so few people took public transit in the US: Only 3.1% of US adults use public transportation to get to work, according to 2022 data from the Census Bureau, down from 5% in 2019, @kendrawrites.com reports @bloomberg.com:

Flour Bakery is coming to the Boston Common in 2025! @parks.boston.gov announced today that Flour has been selected to manage the Boston Common Concession Pavilion. Congratulations, Flour! 🥯

We have always relied on the oil and gas industry to self-report methane emissions. Now we have independent ways to of measuring those emissions and it turns out they were lying about the emissions. By a lot. The blue lines are actual measurements. The pink are industry numbers.

It’s true, #mapoli pod friends, @thehorserace.bsky.social is now on here too!

Someday we, too, can be free of 4 buses coming back to back to back to back in Boston

Today’s very cynical @bostonglobe.com editorial eyeroll at the initial BPS-only pilot phase of our Boston Family Days free museum program overlooks the operational work to launch & sustainably run a program of this scale. Sharing a bit of the reality behind how it works: 🧵

Nick Collins is the Kyrsten Sinema of Massachusetts. Just annoying politician who obstructs everything for no reasons.

My latest in Bloomberg CityLab: Kansas City is a pioneer using microtransit, one of the hottest ideas in public transit. But KCATA chief Frank White told me microtransit’s costs are astronomical, 10x more than a fixed-route bus. He thinks the hype is overblown. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Roughly 30% of today’s #MBTA NB Red Line trains are bunched. Yikes

Vietnam's parliament or National Assembly approved a 1,541km long high speed railway line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City today. Called the North South Express Railway, the project is expected to start construction in 2027 and Vietnam hopes the line will start operating by 2035. In addition...

Happy Thanksgiving.

Of all the things that didn’t happen, this call between Ed Flynn and a business owner didn’t happen the most.

If the U.S. could build metros at the same cost as Rennes' metro, the country could construct 239 miles of subway and 418 stations every year for just 50% of its annual spending on new highways and roads.

For the first time ever, Boston’s Newbury Street will be pedestrian only in the winter. ❄️ ☃️ Sunday December 1 and 8 ⏰ 10-6

So many important voices in this @bostonglobe.com on Blue Hill Ave ⬇️ Fun fact: the rezoning we codified in Mattapan for more housing & small biz was the 1st time in a decade that planning had turned into actual zoning in Boston. This also launched our citywide rezoning process, the 1st in 60 years.

“A startling statistic emerged in Paris last month: during the morning and evening rush hours, on representative main thoroughfares crisscrossing the French capital, there are now more bicycles than cars – almost half as many again, in fact.” Leadership. #Paris www.theguardian.com/cities/2023/...

NO MORE SLOW ZONES ON THE RED LINE: Last October, the median end-to-end trip from Alewife to Braintree took 78 minutes. As of this morning, that trip has been reduced to 51 minutes: mass.streetsblog.org...

“We have to think bigger & be bolder when it comes to solutions to our region’s greatest challenges. These changes require all of us to take an open mind to rethinking the last 60 years of unsustainable sprawl & embrace more walkable, infill housing (again!).” commonwealthbeacon.org/opinion/walk...

If you're my friend you don't need a therapist, a personal trainer, or a financial advisor. I will give you an extremely inadequate version of all those services for free

I know this isn’t the point, but it was absolutely stunning to me that federal headcount has been more or less stagnant during a period over which US population more than doubled

As Trump prepares to take a sledgehammer to the "administrative state," it's worth revisiting this @adamconover.net celebration of the non-partisan government workers who make life better and safer for us in so many ways that most of us take for granted. www.netflix.com/title/81037116

It's worth pointing out that even if the City of Yes was paired with *realistic* MTA service expansion, people would still be up in arms because they can only conceive of a world in which they drive everywhere.

Well this wasn't forecast: Dr. Oz for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator

A good reminder when people think of free transit fares - they are usually implemented in places with poor transit, because it’s seen as an “easy” way to make transit look more attractive. The issue is most people don’t care about saving a couple dollars to ride a crappy service!

HERE IT IS! My 1st Urbanism & City-Building Starter Pack. I’ll keep adding to it as more city champions arrive here on Bluesky & I discover more of you. Please share this far & wide to support and grow our urbanism community here. Our cities need all the help they can get! go.bsky.app/G7isZfk
